Every podcast has that one 'Cursed' Episode and this is mine. Whether it was technical issues, Life Issues, or perhaps even a bit of Mercury Retrograde at work, this episode has been a bit of a challenge to get out. Still, despite all the good, bad, and the ugly, I prevailed and my 'Spyfall' review is finally here for you guys!

NOTE: I mention this at the top of the show, but I also wanted to mention here that this episode was actually recorded several weeks ago. So, because of that, some of what I had to say is a bit dated now that we've seen the finale. Still I sincerely hope that you give it a listen anyway, as I talk about MANY OTHER things as well – including my squee over the casting of one of my favorite actors Sacha Dhawan as the newest incarnation of the Master.

So, anyway, yes, please join me as I rather belatedly talk (rather extensively) about my thoughts on 'Spyfall'. Hold on to your hats everyone and enjoy the ride!

Can’t wait to see all of the Sea Devil photoshops we’ll get out of this.

I find it interesting that in reality the Silurians are the ones in charge of this story, completely and utterly. But while they may be the ones in control, they aren’t the ones who lend their name to the title of the story. The Sea Devils don’t really do anything except show up and cap a bunch of fools, and then they just kind of… die. And yet somehow the story is named after them? It’s Warriors of the Deep, written by Johnny Byrne and aired between January 5th and 13th , 1984.

As Series 12 of Doctor Who draws to a divisive finale, Barry and Ant return to face Cybermen, the Master and fandom in their review of The Timeless Children. Suranne Jones appeared in a story from Series 3 of The Sarah Jane Adventures called Mona Lisa’s Revenge, in which she played the painting itself, which came to life for space reasons and started running around an art gallery with a big space gun, accompanied by her curator sidekick, played by Jeff Rawle (Plantagenet in Frontios).

We mention a couple of works by Neil Gaiman’s, including The Graveyard Book a strangely funny, elegiac and occasionally terrifying children’s book, and The Sandman, a best-selling comic book series, which is about to be released on Netflix.

James is right: the word petrichor was coined in 1964 by Australian researched Dick Thomas, to describe a phenomenon that had previously been called argillaceous odour. So thanks for enriching the language, Dick.

Neil Gaiman wrote a Doctor Who mini-episode called Rain Gods starring Matt Smith and Alex Kingston. It was included on the Series 7 DVD and Blu-ray box set.

After the closing credits — you do keep listening after the credits, don’t you? — Steven mentions an interview with Neil Gaiman and Stephen Fry from the Hay Festival in 2017 in which he talks about writing for Doctor Who.

Perennial FTE punching bag Dodo Chaplet contracts syphilis — or at least an alien sex virus — in Daniel O’Mahony’s Virgin Missing Adventure The Man in the Velvet Mask.

During the Doctor’s year off in 2009, the 456 arrive on Earth to kidnap millions of children and are thwarted by Torchwood, without the assistance of Martha or Mickey. Despite this, Children of Earth is just about the best thing produced in Doctor Who’s modern era. If you haven’t seen it, you definitely should.

After the traditional transporter accident, Troi finds herself with two Will Rikers in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode Second Chances, and somehow fails to take the obvious course of action.

James wants you to watch The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith, which is episodes 5 and 6 of Series 3 of The Sarah Jane Adventures, and which includes the last scenes David Tennant filmed at the Doctor before his final regular episodes were broadcast at the end of 2009. It features the Trickster and Nigel Havers, only one of whom is trying to marry Sarah.

Peter recommends War of the Worlds, a Fox co-production from 2019, which features Ty Tennant, the son of Georgia and David Tennant, previously seen in his grandfather’s Doctor Who fiftieth anniversary special, The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot.

Todd

Todd wants to take us a bit highbrow this week, with the sensational Netflix series, Tiger King, which for many of us was the way we celebrated the beginning of our endless COVID lockdown. Very much worth a look.

Taking the opportunity to retreat into his own childhood, Nathan suggests that you read Tove Jansson’s Moomin books, which range from charming and whimsical to elegiac and character-driven. Recommended.
