The Power of 3 Podcast Episodes

  • 72: So Long, Farewell

    4 August 2021 (11:16pm GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 seconds

It’s another Power of Two episode – but probably not the two you were expecting!

This week, Tom and David are in the hotseats, as they discuss the biggest Doctor Who news story of the year – the confirmation that the actress Jodie Whittaker, and showrunner Chris Chibnall, are leaving the show.

They discuss the whole casting of a female Doctor, Chibnall’s direction of the show, and more.

(Kenny will return next week as he was at a family wedding in England)

  • 71: Reanimating the Dead

    29 July 2021 (12:01am GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 seconds

No, this week’s episode is not a reference to Tom’s political career or Kenny’s days in newspapers…

David and Kenny convene in Glasgow’s Queen Park to discuss the BBC’s necromancy, as they breathe new life into long-lost stories.

This week they discuss the official news the The Evil of the Daleks is coming to us in an animated form, give their thoughts on the rumours released of Galaxy 4 and The Abominable Snowmen, as well as some general thoughts on what they want to see in animated stories of original TV soundtracks.

  • 70: Further Variations on a Theme

    22 July 2021 (7:45am GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 seconds

Kenny’s flying solo once again on the good ship Power of Three.

With Tom and Dave suffering from the Space Plague (not COVID, and definitely not working too much, honest!), Kenny brings you another 11 versions of the Doctor Who theme that you’ve probably never heard before!

  • 69: Variations on a Theme

    15 July 2021 (12:01am GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 seconds

With David and Tom caught up with work and holidays, we have our first ever Power of One episode.

Kenny put out a Tweet asking for people’s favourite alternative versions of Ron Grainer’s famous musical work, and introduces some of the most popular versions of the Doctor Who theme that we never got on TV – and some that are, well… different.

  • 68: War – Hurrgh!

    8 July 2021 (12:10am GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 seconds

The War Doctor is back, as Big Finish have released The War Doctor Begins, a new series of audios looking back to the earliest days of the Doctor’s ‘secret’ incarnation.

The team discuss the box set, as well as assessing just how well Jonathon Carley has done at stepping into the War Doctor’s boots (clue: it’s very well).

(Huge thanks to Jonathon for his guest appearance in this episode, as well as Alan McWhan and Steve Foxon for their assistance in salvaging this episode when the recording seemed to have been lost)

  • 67: Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner?

    1 July 2021 (7:33am GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 seconds

It’s the question we’ve all (probably) asked ourselves at one time or another… if you were having a Doctor Who dinner party, who would you invite?

This week, Kenny, David and Tom are out at the Crystal Bucephalus for dinner, and using a time scoop, are bringing a living Doctor Who guest to join them, as well as someone who’s deceased, and tapping into the Land of Fiction to bring someone from the Doctor Who universe to join them.

    But who will choose who?

  • 66: A tribute to Jackie Lane

    27 June 2021 (9:30am GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 seconds

In this short episode of The Power of 3, we remember  the late Jackie Lane, who played Dodo Chaplet.

Born in July 1941, she passed away just three weeks short of her 80th birthday, on June 23.

Dodo was a companion of the First Doctor and a regular in the programme in its third season, from February to July 1966, featuring in six stories and 19 episodes.

  • 65: Unconventional

    24 June 2021 (12:05am GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 seconds

This week, Tom, David and Kenny share their memories of going to conventions over the years.

Between them, they’ve been to events in Glasgow, Manchester, London, and even the Isle of Man, and met a host of Doctor Who stars, from Jon Pertwee to Tom Baker, Elisabeth Sladen to Peter Purves, and see that bloke who played Condo in The Brain of Morbius doing “John Brown’s cow went splat against the wall…”

But prepare for a shock – one of them has NEVER BEEN TO A DOCTOR WHO CONVENTION. But which one of them is it?

  • 64: Out of Luck, Out of Time

    17 June 2021 (6:18am GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 seconds

Kenny and Dave enjoy a pleasant trip to the jungle of Kembel, as they discuss the latest Out Of Time release, where the Tenth Doctor encounters his fifth incarnation in The Gates of Hell, from Big Finish.

And Tom pops in very briefly!

  • 63: Stage Fright

    9 June 2021 (11:30pm GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 seconds

Back to business (is business) this week as Tom, Dave and Kenny reconvene.

This week, they share their memories of watching Doctor Who being performed, LIVE, before their very eyes.

We enter the worlds of The Ultimate Adventure, Doctor Who Live: The Monsters Are Coming!, and The Symphonic Spectacular.

    And Tom swears.

  • 62: Other Lives

    3 June 2021 (7:20am GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 seconds

This week, the Power of 3 team talk amongst themselves, quite literally.

If you’ve ever wondered how Kenny came to be involved with Big Finish as the editor of Vortex, or were a tad curious about Tom’s fascinating podcast series The Imposter (telling of his relationship with the Labour Party and life as a Member of Parliament), or want to know more about Dave’s love of comics in the Earth 2 podcast, then this is the episode for you.

  • 61: Oh Ecc

    27 May 2021 (6:46am GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 seconds

A stitch in time saves nine, according to the old saying.

Power of 3 listeners will be aware that we NEVER refer to Doctors by numbers, so that proverb means nothing this week.

However, David and Kenny have been listening to the return to Doctor Who of Christopher Eccleston, in his first Big Finish box set, and you can find out if they think it’s fantastic, or not, by tuning in.

Sadly, Tom’s missing in action this week. Whilst checking under the bonnet of his car, he inadvertently looked into the time vortex which powers it, and Tom accidentally consumed it. He’ll be back next week when he’s ejected it from his system.

  • 60: Room 103

    19 May 2021 (11:08pm GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 seconds

In a completely original idea for something new and different, Tom, Dave and Kenny discuss things from the Whoniverse that they’d love to see the back off.

Each of the team takes a turn to be persuaded by the other two about what to consign to the eternal fires of damnation, in their very own vault of horror.

How will Tom cope with having to make a decision when he normally sits on the fence, all the time?

What will go in? Or even, who? Featuring tweets from listeners, we try to clear the decks of the things that most annoy us all.

  • 59: Doctor Who Family Tree – On Her Majesty’s Secret Service

    13 May 2021 (8:22am GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 seconds

Tom, David and Kenny find another branch of the Doctor Who family tree, as they dip a toe into the world of Bond. James Bond. Not Brooke or Basildon.

Kenny (who used to do a 007 fanzine, Universal Exports) and Tom are avowed fans of Bond, but Dave is more of a casual viewer, so what will our trio think of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, the only outing for George Lazenby as the super spy?

It’s a film that divides opinion among 007 fans – so will the team love it or hate it?

Warning – contains a huge spoiler for a film released in 1969!!!!

  • 58: The (Dalek) Universal – part one (Contains spoilers)

    6 May 2021 (12:19am GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 seconds

Kenny and David have an away day, as they visit planet Exxilon, but Tom is unable to join them as they discuss the start of the Dalek Universe.

Big Finish have brought us adventures featuring Anya Kingdom and Mark Seven, with River Song and the Queen of the Mechonoids, the Fourth Doctor discovering the Dalek Protocol, and the first three Dalek Universe adventures with David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor. This episode is full of spoilers – you have been warned!

  • 57: It Takes Two

    29 April 2021 (2:57pm GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 seconds

The episodes went on two by two, hurrah, hurrah!

We turn back the clock as David, Tom and Kenny return to the original idea of the Power of 3, to watch three linked TV episodes – in this case, two-part stories – and share their views on them. This week, they sample the delights of The Edge of Destruction (not The Brink of Disaster, BSB!), The Sontaran Experiment and The Awakening. And stay listening to the very end, as Tom raises a salient point…

And if you’re wondering, this week theme mix features Ye Gods.

Can you handle this much excitement? If you can, hit play NOW! If you can’t, still hit play NOW!

  • 56: God Bless The VHS

    22 April 2021 (1:36pm GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 seconds

If you were a Doctor Who fan in the 20th century, the chances are you owned a host of VHS tapes.

Tom, Dave and Kenny cast their minds back to the days when they owned VHS and Video 2000 machines, where they got their tapes, and their recording off-air experiences.

Listen carefully – there’s loads of bonus Easter eggs throughout this episode – can you spot them all?

(This episode’s title is borrowed/a homage/stolen from a feature by Alistair McGown in an edition of the fanzine Paisley Pattern)
