Episode 13: A Device of Death
The Doctor Who Book Club PodcastJanuary's review is A Device of Death by Christopher Bulis. And what could interest the Time Lords in this war-torn sector of space?At the heart of a star-spanning conspiracy lies an ancient quest: people have been making weapons since the dawn of time -- but perhaps someone has finally discovered the ultimate device of death.A Device of Death is slotted nicely in between the television stories "Genesis of the Daleks" and "Revenge of the Cybermen," so presumably something goes haywire with the time ring provided to the Doctor and his friends. (Fun fact: this is Erik's favorite period of the show, so he is particularly looking forward to this one.)This episode will be the first in which we have a "repeat author"; we previously read Christopher Bulis' The Sorcerer's Apprentice for our first episode back in January of 2011, so in a way we've come full circle (yes, we've been doing this for a year, and we can hardly believe it ourselves). Although The Sorcerer's Apprentice is perhaps Bulis' best-known work, he also penned four other Virgin Missing Adventures, one for BBC's Eighth Doctor range, and five for BBC's past Doctors range.Thank you to those of you that have dedicated a year to listening to us, and we are looking forward to providing you with many more reviews in the year(s) to come. In the meantime, grab a cup of tea, sit back in your easy chair, and immerse yourself in A Device of Death.

Fast Return SwitchOur audio troubles are all fixed this week! I’m particularly proud of how this one turned out!
This week we cover a story featuring something called ‘The Daleks’. I’d Never heard of them before but actually found them to be one of The Doctors more compelling adversaries. It’s a shame they only ever featured in this one story arc as I feel they had some potential.
If any listener has heard of these ‘Daleks’ appearing in any spin off novels or Fan fiction or anything, could you let me know? Post a comment at our blog, maybe? It can be found at FRSwitch.blogspot.com I’d love to know more about them.
I’m not keen on that ‘Dave Ross’ fellow though. He needs to take more care of his skin.

In this week’s show we make the trip way back for an Adversary Archive on the Ice Warriors starting with the Second Doctor’s first encounter in the appropriately titled The Ice Warriors. Then another outing with the Second Doctor as the Ice Warriors return in The Seeds of Death.Next, we turn our attention to two Third Doctor stories, The Curse of Peladon, and it’s sequel, The Monster of Peladon. And then Glenn reviews a medium that has not been looked at until now on Traveling the Vortex, as the Tenth Doctor and Donna meet the Ice Warriors in the IDW comic book, Cold Blooded War.

Then we talk about The Unquiet Dead. There is the top 30 Doctor Who podcasts and we have feedback from Ian Kirk and the usual banter of cours e.
On an unusually serious note, our friend and correspondent, Robert Haynes is seriously ill in hospital at the moment. He has contracted an infection while having difficulties with a stoma bag. He is in intensive care under enduced coma in the hope that his body can recover from the infection. We all miss him and are very worried. Thank you to all of you who have sent good will messages via all means of feedback. If you have a God, please pray for Robert and his family during this difficult time.

Who's He?It's audio commentary time again! This week the lads bring you the second part of their commentary for The Invasion parts 5 to 8. This time they run out of steam as Tony was all facted out and Phil resorts to making sexist comments about women of the sixties (and tries to justify it) whilst Paul keeps a dignified silence. Tony also does something that makes Phil swear which results in the use of a "beep", the first in the history of this podcast.
