But are they genuine happy smiling faces that Phil and Paul are sporting or are they the forced smiles that some of the characters were wearing this story? And as this is also Frank Cottrell Boyce's 2nd contribution to Doctor Who, do the lads think this is an improvement on In The Forest of The Night? Listen to find out what they thought and also what the listeners thought in our listener feedback.

And in a very quiet news week, episode 4 is getting a special 3D audio experience on the BBC iPlayer which leads Phil to try and explain binaural sound (he fails). And we also continue with our new feature, Omega's Stats Corner!

On this weeks show Phil and Paul return once again to the literary world of Doctor Who with a look at the Target novelisation Doctor Who and The Space War, otherwise known as Frontier in Space. Yes, a story of two mighty empires on the brink of war and how the Doctor and Jo manage to miss all that by testing a number of different prison cells.  And also during the course of their discussion, they lament the BBC budget in replacing a mighty lizard with a gentlemens scrotal sack.

And in the news this week, the sad passing of Derek Martinus and Kate O'Mara, casting news for series 8 and in Omega's Tat Corner it's time for some sexist footwear!

But with new Doctor Who still months away, trickles of information are beginning to emerge as to the shape of Series Eight, including returning writers (Gareth Roberts), new actors (Tom Riley) and...well, that's about it. It's only April! One thing you won't have to wait for is the return of Fluid Links, where the Three Who Rule once again take your questions about the show and use their tiny mind-computers to formulate opinions. Next week, it's another classic series commentary with "The Curse of Peladon"! Whee!

Happy New Year, folks! In our first episode of 2014 we're getting stuck into X-Men issue 22 Divided -- We Fall! (July 1966). This was the first issue in which Roy Thomas had full creative autonomy and it's interesting to spot the changes. The X-Men are up against a new super (or not so super) villain collective led by Count Nefaria. Thomas is obviously trying to change things up here and give the readers some fresh material so this is definitely an issue worth a read!

MUTTER'S SPIRAL Podcast returns to discuss "Smile" (by Frank Cottrell Boyce), episode 2 of Series 10 of DOCTOR WHO. John and I talk about Bill's first "official" trip in the TARDIS, and how her first off-world adventure compares to other "first trips" in the modern era (echoes of Rose, Amy, Clara) and what that could portend for the Doctor-Bill relationship as well as the rest of this series. We will go over the plot, noting similarities to many other works, both inside of DOCTOR WHO and outside, and give opinions on how well the story worked for us.

We will also talk Ratings and the New Doctor Rumor Mill, and there's some excellent trivia this week - I'm forced to use "Eagles Math" to get my score over 50%!

Happy New Year, folks! In our first episode of 2014 we're getting stuck into X-Men issue 22 Divided -- We Fall! (July 1966). This was the first issue in which Roy Thomas had full creative autonomy and it's interesting to spot the changes. The X-Men are up against a new super (or not so super) villain collective led by Count Nefaria. Thomas is obviously trying to change things up here and give the readers some fresh material so this is definitely an issue worth a read!

Our apologies for the late release, but with both of us traveling for the holidays, time just got away from us!  This month we bring you our discussion of the BBC Eighth Doctor novel The Fall of Yquatine by Nick Walters, featuring the Eighth Doctor (duh!), Fitz, and Compassion.  From the back cover:

As the Doctor tries to talk sense into the politicians and soldiers, and Compassion tries to avert the war, Fitz is about to discover that things can truly get worse.

This is our first selection by Nick Walters, who has written two Eighth Doctor novels, Dominion and Reckless Engineering, the Virgin New Adventure Dry Pilgrimage, and the BBC Past Doctor novel Superior Beings.
