Cutaway Comics is a new British imprint of comics and graphic novels drawn from the darker recesses of a dangerous, unpredictable cutaway universe. From the creators of the acclaimed Vworp Vworp! (originally Wdyjsoytsagadslbi?: Why don’t you just switch off your television set and go and do something less boring instead?) was a BBC children’s television series broadcast in 42 series between 20 August 1973 and 21 April 1995. It was originally broadcast in the morning during the school summer holidays. The format consisted of groups or “gangs” of children responding to letters from viewers who wrote into the show suggesting games, ‘makes’ and days out. Typically these were arts-and-crafts activities or games and magic tricks children could learn to impress their friends. Russell T Davies was later at one time a producer and director for “Why Don’t You…?”. Under Davies’s direction, the format of the series shifted from magazine show to drama.

It’s Christmas in July, and what could be more Christmassy than having your brains sucked out by predatory alien crabs? Why, Nick Frost as Santa, of course! So welcome, everyone, to your Last Christmas.

We often use an episode’s show notes to enumerate a story’s influences, but Mr Moffat has already done it for us. Towards the end of the episode, Shona picks up a piece of paper which outlines her Christmas Day itinerary, including DVD (Alien), DVD (The Thing from Another World), and DVD (Miracle on 34th Street). She also plans to forgive Dave, which is nice.

Brendan mentions the long-forgotten Doctor Who spin-off Class, whose only season aired towards the end of 2016. Peter Capaldi’s Doctor appears in the first episode, which is his only onscreen appearance between the 2015 Christmas Special The Husbands of River Song and the 2016 Christmas Special The Return of Doctor Mysterio.

Before Last Christmas there was, of course, Inception (2010): Christopher Nolan’s film about people making a journey through nested dreamscapes.

Review - Masters of War

Just for a change Phil and Paul have a listen to Masters of War, part of the Doctor Who Unbound series of audio stories from Big Finish. In this "what if" scenario, The Doctor (played by David Warner) and his travelling companion Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart land the TARDIS on Skaro and find that the Daleks have subjugated the Thals and the Doctor sets out to help them fight back. However not everything on Skaro is as it seems.

How will Phil and Paul react to a story that is not (gasp!) canon? Will David Warner live up to Paul's lofty expectations? And will Phil get his in his impression of a spaced out Mr. Burns? Listen to find out if any of this is true!

The TARDIS lands at Gatwick Airport in the 1960s, and the Doctor and his companions discover that some young people have gone missing under mysterious circumstances. The investigation leads them to Chameleon Tours and they uncover a fiendish plot to kidnap the youth of Britain!!

This unplanned podcast finds Phil and Scott chatting about The Faceless Ones starring Patrick Troughton as the Doctor. This is Scotts first animated story and his first Troughton story so there was a lot to discuss! This story is also notable for the departure of Ben and Polly from the TARDIS and both Phil and Scott reckon they have improved on part of episode six by creating their first Doctor Who reconstruction!

Ben and Mark wrap up the Flux part of their GTF event series with a chat about "Survivors of the Flux" and "The Vanquishers".  While it may have its flaws, they find that it's a tour de force performance from Jodie Whittaker - all 3 of her. 

Also: Mark recounts how he came to own one of JN-T's shirts. Ben finds a rare Douglas Adams book in a furniture shop in Country Wicklow. A look back at "FHM for nerds" in the 1990s, and Mark says goodbye to his chances of writing for Candy Jar books.
