• Planet of Evil Episode 4

It's March 1976, and, it's not the first Target novelization to feature The Ice Warriors, but it is the novelization of their very first TV adventure. It's Brian Hayles' second, and, sadly, final, Target novelization.

After a discussion of the news this week in New York City-based Doctor Who fandom, Jason welcomes back to the show Frazer Gregory, to discuss the Ice Warriors novelization. The two of us exchange dramatic readings of favorite passages, discuss how well Hayles captured the 2nd Doctor in print, along with all the other supporting characters and monsters. We come at this book from different perspectives, having discovered it at very different times in our lives. And Frazer makes a run at becoming the King of 20 Questions on Doctor Who Literature... can he do it?

Oswin is an old Anglo-Saxon name meaning “friend of God”. An Oswine was king of Northumbria in the Seventh Century; his predecessor was King Osric. Ingrid Oliver’s Doctor Who character, first introduced in Day of the Doctor, is called Osgood, and Richard is correct that the Os- element means God in both names.

Richard also mentions Jean Cocteau’s La belle et la bête (1946), particularly as an inspiration for the strange vision Amy has of Daleks as people as she succumbs to the Asylum planet’s Dalekifying influence.

Doctor Who fandom is aflutter this week with the release of a glorious new trailer announcing the casting of none other than Matt Berry as the new Doctor Who! Of course this was all a cunning April Fool’s jape by none other than Who animator Rob Ritchie, but if you enjoy profane nonsense we highly recommend it. The REAL trailer this week for “Legend of the Sea Devils” also charmed us with its soggy swashbuckling (of seatbelts), and of course we have the usual Big Finish blast of new announcements, Peter Davison convention shenanigans, and the third episode of our Classic Series Commentary for “Planet of Evil”! Enjoy, or be banished to a pit full of anti-matter!

As Phil sits down with him to watch episodes 1 and 2 this week, he gets confused and fails to explain properly what is going on with the Tardis entering itself (ooer!), whilst Scott enjoys Tegan being gobby and is amazed at the shine on Adrics nose!

This week Jason is joined by Lewis Baston, author of a forthcoming Obverse Books' Black Archive book on the Doctor Who serial "The Sun Makers", to talk about Malcolm Hulke's February 1976 novelization of "Invasion of the Dinosaurs"... but, fear not, we get plenty of talk in about "The Sun Makers", too.

Later on, Jason breaks down all the ways, plot-wise and dialogue-wise, and tone-wise, how the novelization differs so greatly from the TV serial.

Along the way, we also discuss Von Daniken, play a game of 20 Questions, and give a look at the new trailer for Doctor Who: "Legend of the Sea Devils".
