Welcome to S4 E02 of Stace & Barry In The Morning; the best podcast by a Brummie bird and a London legend about geek stuff (probably)!

This episode, the pair make up for lost time with not one but two Picks of the Fortnight each! Stacey wholeheartedly encourages everyone to check out RRR and adds her voices to the chorus of praise for Everything Everywhere All At Once, whilst Barry rips his shirt off in admiration of Top Gun: Maverick and gets back on the Stranger Things train.

All this, plus some corking tunes and a snippet of Paper Girls news. Cor!

THIS week's episode of Pieces of Eighth brings you a first - we actually have a reading of a full, officially licensed BBC Doctor Who story (except we've done it unofficially!).

We bring you a full reading of Tara Samms' Totem, which originally appeared in the book More Short Trips. It's been performed by Becca, with Kenny on sound design.

And then, to top it all off, we've got an interview with Steve Cole, who was the editor of the collection and tells us more about Totem.

(And we've got to say thanks to our friends over at Fiction Paradox, the world's only Eighth Doctor BBC Books-dedicated podcast, that they know of) for reminding us of the story, and to those cheeky chappies at The Sirens of Audio podcast, who've previously brought Short Trips to life as readings, for the inspiration to do this)

Doctor Who Literature is delighted and overjoyed to bring you Jason's interview with Philip Hinchcliffe, the man who produced "The Seeds of Doom" for television and who then wrote the novelization. This half-hour was one of the high points of Jason's decades as a fan and we couldn't be happier to share it with you.

Our guest conversation this week is with Shannon Dohar (@SDohar), a Doctor Who fan in New York City, whose voice you can also hear on the musical podcasts Deeper Cuts and So Much to Sing About. What was it like reading the novelizations and New Adventures in the US before the New Series hit it big here? What are our thoughts on the Chris Chibnall era? How much does Philip Hinchcliffe and his era's stories mean to us today? Spoiler alert: Quite a bit. And how does Shannon fare on a game of "Twenty Questions"?

Lastly, Jason reviews the "Seeds of Doom" novelizations and talks about the different needs of a six-week TV serial versus a 120-page adaptation.

Special thanks to David Barsky for the production of this episode.

    Trust Your Doctor

    15:57 (GMT) - 5 Jun 2022

Damn, now I want Hot Chocolate.

Conspiracies. Can’t live with ’em, can’t live without coming up with a new one every 4.6 seconds. Well, maybe that’s just me. Or maybe, just maybe, it’s just this week’s story, coming your way via our way courtesy once again of Big Finish. It’s all about conspiracies – actually just one conspiracy in particular, that conspiracy being The Marian Conspiracy written by Jacqueline Raynor and released on March 12, 2000.

What titles would we give each Doctor if they were named instead of numbered? (This is in response to an email we got.)

    Here’s my (Kiyan) picks:
    1. The Black and White Doctor
    2. The Second Black and White Doctor
    3. The First Not Black and White Doctor
    4. Thete
    5. The Third Not Black and White Doctor
    6. Colin
    7. Sylvester Stallone
    8. The Doctor
    9. The The Older Something Is The Stronger It Is Doctor
    10. The David Tennant Doctor
    11. The War Doctor
War. The Old-Ass One Foot in the Grave Doctor
    12. The Caecilius Doctor
    13. The RIP Doctor Who 1963-2017 Doctor
    Fugitive. The Mysterious Doctor

    Show-notes:
4:00: Pretty sure Dylan just said this for the title.
5:10: As always, here’s the timescales webpage for The Marian Conspiracy.
5:50:It was The Land of the Dead. Lmao. Also, I was wrong about Power. It was the second episode of series D. The episode I was referring to was Horizon. Oops.
11:22: I was, of course, wrong again. It was the Tenth Doctor story New Earth.
13:56: Can’t believe I’m unironically linking Horace Slughorn in a Doctor Who podcast.
26:50: I’m just reading Mary’s wikipedia page at this point.
41:20: The cover for The Marian Conspiracy is on the timescales page above, but here it is solo anyway. And here’s the meme, for the millionth time in our show notes, for reference.
1:03:08: Here’s the article I’m reading off of. (Editor’s note: I think this is the right link. Either way, the information is there. I just don’t know whether it’s exactly where Dylan got it.) (Dylan’s Note: Yep that’s right)
    1:06:29: Our ep on Bang-Bang-a-Boom
    1:11:12: I spent the promised 5 minutes and couldn’t find it. ?
    1:18:39: The Curator

Well, it's not really the news, this is Paul's chance to air his views on the return of David Tennant and Catherine Tate to Doctor Who and also what he thought of Legend of The Sea Devils! Then Phil and Paul's conversation turns to what might happen in the 60th anniversary year?

    Review - Enlightenment

Phil and Paul finally get around to discussing Enlightenment, the final part of The Black Guardian Trilogy from 1983.  It's been a long time since either of them watched this but they found a lot to enjoy in an unusual story from that period of Doctor Who. And of course they discuss the acting talents of Leeeeeeeeeeeeeee John!

In this episode of the Who's He? Podcast....

    The News

Maureen O'Brien was the first "new" companion to replace a departing Doctor Who companion back in 1965. Vicki was a replacement to Susan, the Doctor's grandaughter, and she instantly lit up the screen with her enthusiasm and chemistry with the regular cast.

Maureen returned to the role of Vicki on audio with Big Finish in 2007.

In this interview Maureen reveals how she came to be acting in the theatre and then transitioned to television with Doctor Who, her relationship with William Hartnell and the rest of the cast, her writing and how she came to be working with Big Finish.

Thanks for chatting with us Maureen!

THIS episode of Pieces of Eighth is released on June 2, 2022 - exactly 25 years to the day since BBC Books began publishing original Doctor Who fiction.

Sadly, Becca's still not able to join us due to the difficult news she was given last week, but with her blessing, we're carrying on and our good friend Matt Michael has stepped in - with just two hours' notice - to help bring this episode to you.

We discuss the launch of the Eighth Doctor Adventures range, featuring exclusive interviews with Steve Cole, his assistant Lesley Levene, and James Macey from Black Sheep, who were responsible for the cover designs, the latter two giving their first Doctor Who interviews.

Kenny also opens up his personal archive, as he and Matt bring you the original BBC press releases and publicity material which were given out to the media back in 1997 -isn't it a good job Kenny NEVER throws away anything?

It's our longest episode yet, at 132 minutes!
