INTERVIEW: Pull To Open: 1962–1963: The Inside Story of How the BBC Created and Launched Doctor Who
The Doctor Who ShowWith a new non-fiction Doctor Who book on the horizon, this time looking at the creation of Doctor Who back in 1963, Rob sits down for the third time in the life of the podcast with friend of the show and the book's author, Paul Hayes.
Pull To Open: 1962–1963: The Inside Story of How the BBC Created and Launched Doctor Who is available from Ten Acre Films on July 24, 2023.

‘Fresh and compelling… As definitive an account of those early years as I have read’ Toby Hadoke
When Doctor Who began on Saturday November 23 1963, few could have guessed that it marked the start of perhaps the most extraordinary story in the history of BBC television drama. But there had already been another story, equally extraordinary yet unseen, leading up to the transmission of that opening episode – the creation of the series itself.
Pull to Open explores the behind-the-scenes saga of Doctor Who in 1963, when a chain of events at the BBC brought together a disparate group to launch what would become one of British TV’s best-loved and most successful programmes. It’s the story of why these events happened; the BBC creative culture into which Doctor Who was born; how television drama was made in the early 1960s; and an insight into the people who started this epic journey.
Drawing from the BBC’s written archives and new interviews with some of those who were there, including Doctor Who’s first director Waris Hussein and original co-star Carole Ann Ford, Pull to Open is a detailed and comprehensive account of the programme’s path to the screen. Immerse yourself in the world of BBC Television in 1963 and discover how a series which was almost cancelled before a single episode was shown survived to cement its place in the popular culture of a nation.
Foreword by Toby Hadoke

Mark Gatiss
The Doctor Who ShowFrom time to time, the Doctor Who Show devotes an episode to a series writer. A great chance to talk about numerous diverse episodes, sometimes from totally different eras of the show, only related by the name on the script.
In today's episode... Mark Gatiss. Possibly the most 'Marmite' of all Doctor Who writers, especially in the modern era. Fans tend to love and hate Gatiss' stories... but strangely can never agree which stories are meant to go in which column!
Stories covered in this episode include:
The Unquiet Dead
The Idiot’s Lantern
Victory of the Daleks
Night Terrors
Cold War
The Crimson Horror
Robot of Sherwood
Sleep No More
The Empress of MarsPlus a number of 'extras' including Gatiss' New Adventure novels, Nightshade, and St. Anthony's Fire, and the 50th anniversary special, An Adventure in Space and Time.
Before then we also talk some recent Doctor Who news, including new cast members for the upcoming Ncuti Gatwa era; Davo's wife has written a book; and are there some missing episodes materialising from the ether in time for the 60th?

Who's He? Podcast 423 | Don't want to be a puppet or a ventriloquist
Who's He?In this episode of the Who's He? Podcast....
Review - The God Complex
In this episode, the Doctor, played by Matt Smith, along with his companions Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill), arrive at a mysterious hotel that seems to be a trap for unsuspecting victims. Each room in the hotel contains the worst fears of the people who enter them, and the fears manifest as a creature that eventually kills them.
To chat about this story, Phil is joined by Mark Cockram from the All Of Time and Space Podcast to chat about this story that Mark chose for discussion. Obviously they get the chills about those damn ventriloquist dolls but for some reason the word "sexy" is used a couple of times for no apparent reason.

Episode 81-A - The Five Doctors, Part I (with James Cooray Smith)
Doctor Who LiteratureThis week, it's The Five Doctors, the 20th anniversary special for Doctor Who, aired (at least in the States) exactly on the 20th anniversary, and the novelization, by episode writer Terrance Dicks, came out the same week. We're now at three times the 20th anniversary, but this story still has a powerful hold.
We'll be bringing you three straight episodes exploring Five Doctors - in every dimension, in every detail - and this week my guest is James Cooray Smith, author of many Black Archives titles such as The Massacre, and keeper of the great Psychic Paper Substack. James and I have much to discuss; there's probably enough material in here to cover seven episodes, let alone one, as we discuss Five Doctors and beyond -- way beyond.
Music heard this week includes a 1980s US cartoon TV theme (sung by John Sebastian!), the theme to the PBS staple This Old House, some old school late '80s hip-hop, and a Jim Sangster (@Monster_Maker) homage to Tulips from Amsterdam.
Shout-out to the Metebelis 2 Podcast.

Terribly Gay
Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who PodcastThis week, Danny’s death is somehow made up for by the culmination of a season-long arc which finally brings Michelle Gomez properly into the limelight. It’s Dark Water.
Notes and links
This week’s evil corporation is 3W, which gets it’s name from the three words Don’t cremate me. But, as Brendan points out, it’s also the production code for Invasion of the Dinosaurs. We explain about production codes in unnecessary detail in the shownotes for Episode 237.
The Black Orchid problem is that a two-part story has its climax at the halfway point instead of somewhere more appropriate. It’s identified by El Sandifer in her essay on that story.
Well, we found the clip for the shownotes: Brendan mentions Chris Addison’s appearance on an episode of Have I Got News for You? hosted by Tom Baker. The whole episode is worth a watch, but the incident that Brendan refers to starts here.
Once again, we allude to the Troops to Teachers programme, which gave veterans the chance to fast-track their teacher training so that they could work in schools. The Guardian reports on the scheme here.
Fans of Missy’s (other) gay sidekick Dr Chang can see much more of Andrew Leung in Lilting (2014), where his lover is played by Ben Whishaw.

Podcastica Episode 283: The Almost People OR No Use Crying Over Spilled Ganger
PodcasticaThis week we watched The Almost People and realize that we probably should have watched it alongside The Rebel Flesh from last time. Sometimes the weight of having a massive reveal at the end (that doesn't impact the current episode) leads to an unbalanced storyline. And given a bit of the body horror present in this story, we wonder if the magical healing properties of the TARDIS are played a little too much toward the end. Regardless, we always find the bits we like most and try to focus on those!

She Was the Hydrangeas All Along
Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who PodcastIt’s like the New Forest only newer, as well as more sudden and completely worldwide. But is it here for revenge, or to provide us with some much-needed help? Let’s find out as Mathew Hounsell and Kevin Burnard join us to discuss In the Forest of the Night.
Notes and links
Here’s an article on William Blake’s ‘The Tyger’, from which this episode gets its name (and its tiger, I guess). Delightfully, as well as providing a short analysis of the poem, it reproduces Blake’s full version of the poem in its original form as a text on a watercolour painting.
Bubble Shock is the extremely unhealthy soft drink created and marketed by the alien Bane in the first story of the first season of The Sarah Jane Adventures.
The Gaia Hypothesis proposes that living organisms and the environment in which they evolved form a complex, self-regulating system that keeps the Earth habitable. It was developed in the 1970s and has generally recieved a fair degree of criticism ever since.
This episode was recorded well before New York’s recent air-quality problems; New South Wales experienced its own version of this in the summer of 2019/2020, just before the pandemic hit. Here’s The Walkley Foundation’s digital exhibition of the most astounding press photographs from that terrible summer.

And more
We’ve got an exciting new Doctor Who project to launch at the start of 2024, but — annoyingly — we’re not going to tell you anything more about it until later in the year. Stay tuned.
In the meantime, you can find Jodie into Terror, our flashcast on the entirety of the Whittaker Era of Doctor Who, at jodieintoterror.com, at @JodieIntoTerror on Twitter, on Apple Podcasts, and wherever podcasts can be found. We’ll be back with a new flashcast on the second Russell T Davies era in November.
Our James Bond commentary podcast is called Bondfinger, and you can find that at bondfinger.com, at @bondfingercast on Twitter, on Apple Podcasts, and everywhere else as well.
We can also be heard on the Blakes 7 podcast Maximum Power, which has completed its coverage of the first half of the show’s entire run. Recording is continuing on schedule, and our coverage of Series C will be ready for you later in the year.
There’s also our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. In our most recent episode, we watched in stunned horror as Enterprise chief engineer Trip Tucker got unexpectedly pregnant, with predictable results.

186 INTERVIEW w_ ARTIST KELLY YATES
The Legend of the Traveling Tardis with Christian BaselON THIS EPISODE, TEAM TARDIS interviews artist KELLY YATES. In Kelly's words "I currently work full-time at Kontoor Brands (Wrangler & Lee Jeans) as a Senior Graphic Designer, and illustrate comic books part-time. I’m best known for illustrating multiple comics and covers for Doctor Who (IDW/Titan), and designing the My Hero Academia and Doctor Who Kawaii toy lines. I’m also the creator of Amber Atoms, a creator-owned comic book series that was originally published by Image Comics. My passion for art, especially comic book art, stems from a family road trip out to California when I was 12-years old. On the way back, we stopped at Yellowstone National Park for the night and to my distress I quickly discovered they had no TV’s in the entire building. Luckily, the gift shop had a few comic books. The one that caught my attention was Cyrstar #6 with Nightcrawler on the cover. I have been reading comics ever since." - kellyyatesart.com KELLY YATES: ► WEBSITE: https://www.kellyyatesart.com/ ► FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/kelly.yates.944 KELLY will be a featured guest at CON KASTERBOROUS: ► https://conkasterborous.net/ Follow The Legend of the Traveling TARDIS on Social Media: ► FACEBOOK - Facebook.com/TheTravelingTARDIS ► YOUTUBE - YouTube.com/TheLegendOfTheTravelingTARDIS ► WEBSITE - TheLegendOfTheTravelingTARDIS.com ► TWITTER - Twitter.com/TheTravelTARDIS ► INSTAGRAM - Instagram.com/legendtravelingtardis ► TWITCH TV - Twitch.tv/travelingtardis ► IHEARTRADIO - iheart.com/podcast/966-the-legend-of-the-travelin-30296020 The Legend of the Traveling TARDIS covers the latest news, gives the most diverse reviews and fun interviews about the Doctor WHO WHOniverse.
