French fries are potatoes so potatoes have to be good right?

A grey quarry. Bland spaceship sets. Poor concept execution. The question is, am I describing Underworld or Frontios? It’s Frontios. Sorry. Frontios was written by Christopher H. Bidmead and aired in January and February of 1984.

This week, we discuss the final story of Season 20’s Black Guardian Trilogy. Todd wants to know all the details, Nathan is busy admiring Captain Wrack’s décolletage, while Brendan waxes philosophical on the nature of Enlightenment.

    Buy the story!

Enlightenment was released on DVD in 1992/1993. In the US, it was released on its own, I think, but it’s completely unavailable on Amazon. Still, you can just buy it as part of the Black Guardian Trilogy box set (Amazon US), which is how it was released in the UK and Australia (Amazon UK).

Barbara Clegg and Rona Munro (Survival) are the only women ever to write for the Classic Series, if we don’t count Lesley Scott’s co-credit on The Ark, and we don’t, apparently.

We’ve mentioned Sapphire and Steel before. It ran on ITV from 1979 to 1982 and starred Joanna Lumley and David McCallum, who played time-travelling agents (sort of), who tried to rectify strange and scary time things caused by anachronisms or paradoxes or something. It’s worth a look, even if it’s glacially slow by modern standards. You can read Den of Geek’s take on the story here; in this essay, Sandifer discusses the series, as well as just about every other genre thing from the same period.

Hm, hm, hm. He he he (that was my Hartnell impression). Hey Who fans. Some very interesting news this week then onto our classic review of The Romans.

    The News

John Barrowman seems to be playing the blame game with the lack of commitment to more Torchwood and throws it all in Moffat’s direction. Well, the Moff is not happy, not happy at all and publicly replies to Mr B. We’ll keep reporting on this one as it unfolds. Handbags at dawn!

Chris Eccleston recently gave a review on an Australian radio station and revels a bit more on how he felt about his time on Who plus a couple of interesting nuggets we haven’t heard before.

    Merch

Talking of John Barrowman, Big Finish are releasing a new audio drama next year called The Lives of Captain Jack. With links to some cool characters from Who, this could be a belter. It’s out June 2017.

Those busy peeps at Candy Jar have another free digital book to get your teeth into, this one based on the legend that is Eileen Younghusband called The Last Duty. Check it out here.

    “The Romans” Review

This week we look into an often forgotten Hartnell story (ahem, Adam!) The Romans. Sprinkled the humour and based loosely on historical fact, this is a fun romp but are we impressed like the Ceasers of old or hung high and dry in the arena?

Thank you for listening and your thoughts. Next week it’s that cheeky 10th Doctor’s turn when we review The Lazarus Project, we look forward to your reviews. Until than have a great week and as always – Allons-y!!
