#158 - Divergent Timelines
Doctor Who: The Metebelis 2We further our discussion of sideways stories and posit that all of Who, or at the very least, all of Who set on Earth are sideways stories that diverge from our earth's timeline. The time of closest intersection with our own timeline is when new companions enters the TARDIS, but as they adventure with the Doctor their timelines grow further apart from reality. Opening music is from Castrovalva and closing music is from Meglos, both composed by Paddy Kingsland.

Lewis Moon and Dr Cool are back for a show with more disturbances than you could count on one hand, as they gather together from two different sides of a phone line to share their thoughts on Delta and the Bannerman, a story they have been dreading for a while now. Alongside this there is a new game to replace "Describe a Doctor Who story in five words" and the reveal of what is up next on the randomizer reviews! (Next Week-A Classic Who variation of our new game, plus some Pertwee action in the reviews)

Episode 11 - A Lesson in Saying Something Nice
Doctor Who : The Sirens of AudioOur special guest this time is Brendan Jones, founder of the Flight Through Entirety podcast, and creator of the YouTube sensations, Say Something Nice and Doctor Who in Ten Seconds.
Our mission was to say something nice about 3 of Big Finish's most loathed audio plays, namely Nekromanteia, The Dark Flame and Dreamtime.
Were there positives somewhere in there that we could find?

Episode 190: Destiny of the Daleks OR I'm In a Glass Tube of Destruction
PodcasticaThe Doctor and Romana find themselves, inadvertently, on Skaro centuries after he was last there (insert cross-reference to Genesis of the Daleks here). Both the Daleks and the Movellans (who appear to have escaped from a Buggles music video) are trying to find a very cobweb covered Davros way down in his base. Why are they both trying to find Davros? What can he possibly offer either group? The answer may well determine the DESTINY OF THE DALEKS!

Redux 2: It Is I, British Man (The Space Pirates)
Trust Your DoctorIt’s me, the newest superhero!
I’m not saying that we’ve engaged in time piracy, stealing Doctor Who from the present then talking about it in the past and then having the show recreate the show from our podcast, but I’m not saying that we didn’t either. Why didn’t Bo Holmes write a story about Time Pirates instead? That would have been way more interesting. We were right all along. It’s The Space Pirates. Written by Robert Holmes and aired between March 8 and April 12, 1969.
Show-notes:
23:43: Check out our Blake’s 7 podcast, Zenith: A Blake’s 7 Podcast.
29:16: Apparently it’s just a myth that the navy has more aircraft than the air force. At least according this Business Insider article from 2015 about debunking military myths.
33:50: Here’s Bob Saget’s take on the “The Aristocrats” joke.
1:17:35: Ben Steed’s first story on Blake’s 7 was Harvest of Kairos.
1:23:23: Pretty sure the movie I was thinking of here was The Box.

Your Bezzie Mate
Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who PodcastRemember tourism? Sure, you would always end up on a crappy bus full of middle-class English holidaymakers who wanted to kill you, and there was always the imminent threat of alien attack, but at least it got you out of the house. Which is why this week we decided to catch up with Doctor Who YouTuber Josh Snares for a weekend getaway on the planet Midnight.
Notes and links
Russell T Davies’s script for Midnight is no longer available on thewriterstale.com, but it can still be found here. (It doesn’t have a title yet, and it’s still called Episode 8.)
In her essay on Fury from the Deep, El Sandifer explains that in a trad base-under-siege story, characterisation tends to focus on the competence of the characters rather than on anything more human and interesting.
The Midnight Entity™ (sigh) reminds James and Brendan of the creature from The Twilight Zone episode Nightmare at 20,000 Feet. (Which starred William Shatner, excitingly.)

Nathan is on Twitter as @nathanbottomley, James is @ohjamessellwood, and Brendan is @brandybongos. The Flight Through Entirety theme was arranged by Cameron Lam, and the strings performance was by Jane Aubourg. You can follow the podcast on Twitter at @FTEpodcast.
On Josh Snares’s YouTube channel, he can be found narrating the history of the missing episodes and animating missing scenes, comparing the DVD animations of Doctor Who stories with their original versions and many other things. He also created the official making-of documentary on the recent recreation of Mission to the Unknown. Josh’s videos are clever, informative, sophisticated and beautifully produced. Do not miss.
