Episode 84 - Snakedance (with Jim Sangster)
Doctor Who LiteratureThe novelization of Snakedance is published the month after the novelization of Kinda, so it fell to Terrance Dicks to adapt both Doctor Who Mara stories from the small screen to the printed page. Terrance doesn't have all that much to add to Christopher Bailey's complex themes and explorations of the dark sides of human nature... but we have plenty to add to the discussion.
Joining me this week is Jim Sangster (@Monster_Maker). Jim also contributed our show logo, and this week's celebrity voice impression sketch. Along the way, we'll talk about the great Hollywood movies, EuroVision and Top of the Pops, Nellie Bly, and... well, many other topics.
Superman: The Movie can be purchased or streamed on Amazon, while My Dinner With Andre can be watched free on YouTube.
You can hear the voices of H.G. Wells and Walt Whitman on YouTube, and also watch the entirety of the January 1973 Foreman v. Frazier heavyweight title fight.
Lastly, for more on Nellie Bly, check out the Bowery Boys Podcast, as I always do for all things NYC.

Stories that could only come from their era
The Doctor Who ShowIn past episodes of the podcast we've considered various TARDIS teams being placed into stories from other eras of Doctor Who and how they would fare. In this episode, we turn that concept on its head somewhat and each come to the table with a Doctor Who story from each era that we think could ONLY be of its era and not be made in a different era with a different team.
Before then, we also talk some recent Doctor Who news, including Ncuti Gatwa confirming he will complete at least two series of the show; Season 20 comes to Blu-ray; Target novelisations of the 60th anniversary stories; and Mark Gatiss comments on how he would play the Doctor.

Doctors Six and Twelve Will See You Now!
The Doctor Who PodcastJoin James and Phil as they get together (after what feels like a suspiciously long time – we suspect a time eddy of some kind) to discuss the news that Season 20 will be the next to receive the blu ray treatment!
Michele and Drew pop up on no fewer than three occasions to review the Sixth Doctor, Mel and (new companion) Hebe box set from Big Finish, Water Worlds.
And not to be outdone, Brent and Ian dial back the clock to the Peter Capaldi’s story, Smile!
All that – and more irreverent Who banter besides – don’t miss it!

SHOW NOTES
(00:00:00) Our guest on this episode is Ian Winterton of Cutaway Comics. Cutaway Comics is a new British imprint of comics and graphic novels drawn from the darker recesses of a dangerous, unpredictable cutaway universe. From the creators of the acclaimed Vworp Vworp! Magazine, they star some of the most enigmatic characters to have graced our screens. Beginning with a four-issue limited series written by Eric Saward (Doctor Who) and featuring the mercenary Lytton (as portrayed by Gangster’s Maurice Colbourne), Cutaway Comics is also bringing you art from the UK’s hottest artists including Barry Renshaw (Judge Dredd, Strontium Dog). Cutaway Comics is inspired by the so-called ‘backup’ strips of Doctor Who Weekly, which delved deeper into the characters and cultures of the Doctor Who universe away from the Doctor. Stay tuned for some exciting and unprecedented explorations of the worlds of Doctor Who and beyond. Ian also appears on the Cutaway Bunker podcast.
(00:05:00) Ian and Gareth’s interview with the Diddly Dummers can be found on their own “Cutaway Bunker” podcast here.
(00:10:46) The Lass O’ Gowrie is a pub in the centre of Manchester once run by friend of the show and Ian’s partner in crime, Gareth Kavanagh, and once a haven for Doctor Who fans.
(00:13:50) “Hot Dog Magazine” was a film magazine published in the UK between 2000 and 2003. The “Taxi Driver” cover of its first issue can be seen on our Tumblr page here.
(00:22:54) Mark’s former band, Midwich, can be seen on our Tumblr page here.
(00:31:45) The Robert McKee “Story” book referred to here is “Story: Substance, Structure, Style and the Principles of Screenwriting”.
(00:48:35) The making of “Yes, Minister” book referred to here is “A Very Courageous Decision: The Inside Story of Yes Minister” by Graham McCann.

TDP 1169: 4th DoctorWho Ark Lost Story
Tin Dog PodcastThis title was released in June 2023. It will be exclusively available to buy from the Big Finish website until 31 July 2023, and on general sale after this date. A space station orbiting Earth has lain dormant for 8,476 years. Its systems are clogged with dust, so the human crew kept frozen in cryogenic storage have never woken up. When the Doctor, Sarah and Harry arrive to resuscitate the sleepers, they discover something else on board. A small, golf-ball like object gives Harry an electric shock, and has a more sinister impact on the awakening crew. Soon, the Doctor and his friends are battling to save the space station - and Earth - from a ravenous puffball!
