Latest Podcast Episodes

Two years since Torchwood was last seen on the TV and computer screens in the brilliant “Children of Earth”, the series returned this past weekend on Starz and SPACE (and, soon, BBC One) with the first installment of the ten-part epic “Miracle Day”. And what an assured debut it was, too, with plenty of action and intrigue to go around with some whimsical japes thrown in for good measure. In addition to this, we have the first of our Summer Classic Commentary series (an event so noteworthy that we’ve chosen to capitalize the name) as we watch and talk over the first three parts of the 1972 serial “The Sea Devils”. Radio Free Skaro: as much fun as one could have in a string vest.

Thanks to a blogger conference call hosted by Starz and BBC Worldwide Productions, I had the chance to ask Russell T. Davies why he thinks Torchwood caught fire in the United States. Earlier, Jef Burnham from filmmonthly.com raised a question I also asked in 2MTL 219: what's the future relationship between Doctor Who and Torchwood?

With the dog days of summer upon us, we here at Sound on Sight are taking advantage of Series Six's summer hiatus by going way back in the wayback machine and revisiting some essential classic Doctor Who serials.

Therefore as both as a service for those new to Who, as well as for our own personal enjoyment, we will spend the remainder of the summer of 2011 looking at some of the good, the bad, and the downright weird from each the first Eight Doctors of the classic series.

This week, Eric Mendoza, Lindsay Wood and Derek Gladu go back to where it all began, the original 1963 serial known as "An Unearthly Child", staring William Hartnel as the Doctor.

With no Lindsey in the office this week, Alex, Nick, and Soph are left to their own devices. And what devices they are. Somehow they manage to review both the original DVD release of the Carnival of Monsters and the second story in the current 7th Doctor Lost Story run, The Crime of the Century. But never fear, they manage to get sidetracked in the most wonderful ways possible.

In Episode Two we add a little structure, including a news section with National, International and local Dr. Who news and a review with commentary of the classic episode Frontier In Space.

For Episode One we’ve set the Randomizer to maximum and are jumping all over the place just talking about whatever comes to mind and seeing where the conversation takes us. From the 1st Doctor to the ever changing T.A.R.D.I.S. control room, they start to get a feel for what the Whostorian might become.

In this episode Matt and Ian discuss the Third Doctor serials "Invasion of the Dinosaurs" and "Planet of the Spiders". Then, in the Chatter in the Library segment, they discuss the Fourth Doctor audio play series "The Hornets' Nest" and the novel "Love and War" by Paul Cornell.

Also included in this episode are interviews with Mr Axon himself, Bernard Holley and Big Finish writer Johnny Morris.
