This week, we basically stand around gloomily watching a fish drown until Todd cheers us up with some surprisingly athletic backflips. It’s The Doctor’s Daughter.

    Notes and links

During the recording of our episode on 42 last year (Episode 170: I Believe Beryl Reid as a Freighter Captain), Brendan and Todd enter an unholy pact to reunite on this week’s episode to redeem The Doctor’s Daughter. With the most terrible consequences.

A few days before we recorded this episode, Chris Chibnall was interviewed in the Radio Times, saying that he would love one day to bring back some of the show’s earlier companions, like Amy, Rory, Ace and Tegan.

Over on Brendan’s YouTube channel, he is — among other things — reviewing each episode of Series 1 exactly 15 years after its first broadcast. Please like and subscribe, of course, and send him your takes on the episodes of the Eccleston Era.

Star Trek: Picard premiered on January 23, 2020, and its first season ran for 10 episodes until March 26. The second and third seasons were ordered before the first season debuted. Several tie-in projects were created for the series, including an episode of the companion series Star Trek: Short Treks that serves as a prequel to Picard.

After a dalliance with Tennant era grandiosity, it's back to the standard Something Who format, comparing the 4th Doctor story The Invisible Enemy from 1977 with 2009's Tenth Doctor story The Waters of Mars. Yes, you guessed it, it's our Virus Special.

Richard is joined by Simon and Giles, and also, moonlighting from his new regular slot on the Missing Episodes podcast, Paul.

Please like or share our podcast with people who will enjoy it. You can rate us directly on Apple Podcasts or Podchaser.com

The opening music is Three Guitars Mood 2 and, yes, that is Richard playing the ukulele and kazoo on possibly the worst ever version of the Doctor Who theme tune at the end.

After a quick recap of our afternoon playing the Quiz of Rassilon with fellow teammates Greg and Jess, we discuss space opera. We explore which stories fit the genre and what does it take to make a space opera story in Doctor Who? The conventional wisdom is Doctor Who is a genre machine, so how frequently does it dip into space opera like other popular sci-fi franchises like Star Trek and Star Wars? Opening and closing music is from "The Frontier in Space," composed by the incomprable Dudley Simpson.

Ben and Mark welcome the 12th Doctor as they discuss 2014’s feature length, cinematic spectacular Deep Breath with a suggested pairing of Robert Holmes’ ghastly gastronomic 1985 story The Two Doctors. Along the way, they travel back along their own timelines to ponder their initial reactions to Deep Breath compared to their opinions on it now, discuss the merits and flaws of bringing back old Doctors outside of anniversaries and talk effusively about the work of Ben Wheatley and casting of Peter Capaldi. ALSO: Being sexually intimidated by Jacqueline Pearce, watching Doctor Who with Frank Skinner, nibbling on an Ogron, Season 6B and whether or not The Two Doctors goes too far. With all of us seeing rather too much of our immediate locales at the moment, what better time to come with us on a voyage through old Cathay?

That said, our TARDIS team may have preferred to self-isolate from their travelling companions – a thieving Venetian and a Machiavellian Mongol.

On this trip of a lifetime, our magic caravanners must face frostbite, poisoning, thirst, a surfeit of sand and some interpretive dance.

The Doctor gets hysterical, Susan gets a friend, Ian gets a go at cherchez la femme and it all gets a bit dicey for Babs.

Will the Doctor ever get back the keys to his caravan?

Does the TARDIS carry a dehumidifier?

Will the great Kublai Khan resort to Cathayan viagra to escape his wife?

And did the trip broaden the minds of Jim and Martin or leave them saddle sore?

    Listen to find out!
