Coming to you a bit later than I'd planned (bad head cold + some Jessica Jones bingeing is a deadly combination for this podcaster, apparently), here is my episode discussion of the recent Zygon 2-parter. This was definitely one of my more personal episodes and certainly most political (which is admittedly odd to me), but then since the story was very political itself, I suppose it was somewhat hard to avoid? Oh, and this was also recorded before the recent Paris attacks, so any similarities to such discussions are entirely coincidental.

In this episode, I discuss identity politics (especially when it comes to Osgood), Zygons in the closet (likely not what you think), the awesomeness that is Jenna Coleman and Peter Capaldi, and revisiting the classic 'Terror of the Zygons'. Also included is some Harry Sullivan love, random music interjections, gratuitous skating references, some podcasting shout-outs, and probably way more than you ever needed to know about how I punch my Queer Card. Also, many coughs were sacrificed to the cutting room floor, but I still managed to come off sounding quite a bit gravely again due to my sore throat.

After that, it's comic talk again, with a look at the entire run of The 4 Doctors by Paul Cornell & Neil Edwards, as well as the first issue of The 8th Doctor, by George Mann and Emma Viecelli. Wow what a weekend! We’re now recharged and relaxed after a very busy weekend at the Doctor Who Festival which we’ll give you the low-down on plus our review of Sleep No More. Episode 65 awaits!

The News

The series finales to series 9 Heaven Sent and Hell Bent will have extended run times according to the BBC. With the 55 minutes and 65 minutes respectively that’s a lot of Who time for TV which is great!

Big Finish have released boxset images for John Hurt’s War Doctor first adventure Only the Monstrous which you can also pre-order now for PS20. We suspect this one may be rather good so definitely a pre-order set.

“Sleep No More” Review

It’s always risky with Doctor Who when you try new things as we all found out with the Marmite episode Love and Monsters but is it a good thing that Mark Gatiss try’s out the now often sniffed at found footage approach? We think you’ll find our review of this one interesting and if someone finds this podcast many years in the future, we’re sure you’ll understand.

Through a series of events not easily explained The Seventh Doctor and Mel have found themselves in 1959 Wales. Luckily they have found a Holiday camp to stay at, unluckily they have to deal with alien princesses, mercenaries, bees, stalkerish mechanics and a bus full of alien tourists. But to make things more interesting, there is an almost companion in the mix... so they got that going from them, which is nice.

From Professor Rasmussen speaking to camera and the complete lack of opening titles to a barely present score and unusual "resolution" to the episode, "Sleep No More" broke all the rules of Doctor Who. Now I'm afraid it'll be harder to break them again.

The general idea of a scary movie/show/book/billboard is that the premise is so frightening it keeps you up at night. It's even right in the title of this week's Doctor Who snooze scare-fest: "Sleep No More." However, the actual moral of the episode is that you should sleep. Quite a lot, actually. To the point that sleep is really the oldest thing. The most important thing. Basically, it is the very thing that makes us human. As you may infer from my attempted sarcasm, this wasn't a favorite of ours. You might say at least one of us really didn't care for it at all. If you want to know who, you're just going to have to listen!
