Big Blue Box Podcast - Episode 45
The Doctor Who Big Blue Box PodcastWelcome back into the Tardis for episode 45 and it’s all getting a bit catty. Not as in squably but, you know, catty. As in fully grown human sized cats. Our review of New Earth awaits but first, the news...
The News
Fans of series geek Osgood will be pleased to know that actress Ingrid Oliver is to join the cast and star alongside Jemma Redgrave for upcoming Big Finish spin off UNIT: Extinction. We love Osgood here on the podcast and can’t wait to get this one delivered.
The BBC are getting fond of festivals this year as the Radio Times Festival heads to Greater London in September. Part of the lineup will be a celebration of Doctor Who (among other great BBC shows) with panels and presentations featuring Steven Moffat, Peter Capaldi and Russell T Davies. Tickets go on sale to the public on the 23rd June.
The mysterious writer for episode 10 that the BEEB blurred out has now been revealed as Sarah Dollard. Those of you who aren’t familiar with Dollards work will definitely know some of the programs she’s written for which include Merlin, Primeval, Being Human and many more.
Strangely, a supporting cast member from series 8 will be joining us for episode 10 of the new series – Rigsy. You will remember him from the awesome episode Flatline in featuring the Boneless. Interesting to see where his character fits in for the new run.
“New Earth” Review
The Doctor and Rose come bounding onto our screens for the first episode of series 2. Plenty of classic Tennant in this one with Rose playing a dual role for most of the story. Human sized cats, nasty diseases and The Face of Bo. It’s all going on but does The Doctor nurse our viewing pleasure or does it leave us feeling like we’ve got the flu?
This week’s trivia question
Last episode we asked you – What were the very first words written in history? The answer is – Hello Sweetie, left by River Song for The Doctor.
This week’s question is – How many people have to be online in order for the Osterhagen key to be allowed to be used? Give us your answer in the comments below or post it on Twitter or Facebook. Good luck!
Thanks again for joining us and a huge thank you as always for all your comments on our review episode! Until next time – Allons-y!

Ep 76 - Soldiering On
Doctor Who: Verity! This week's topic is one we've touched on a bit, but we thought it deserved its own episode. Join Deb, Erika, Lynne, and Tansy as we talk about companions who were also soldiers (or soldierey or soldier-adjacent). Naturally, there's a lot of UNIT talk, but there are more soldier-companions than you might think.
What do you think of the military companions? And how do you feel about the Doctor's ever-evolving reaction to soldiers? Let us know in the comments!
^E
Also covered [links on our site]:
- Tansy reads about Osgood as Missy's companion in a fanfic called "The Dread Pirate Missy"!
- Erika looks forward to two new comic books series from former Doctor Who writers:
- Rivers of London from Ben Aaronovitch and Andrew Cartmel!
- This Damned Band from Paul Cornell!
- Lynne discovers a new 10th Doctor Tumble love: Three TARDISes and a Tea!
- Deb
- does some fannish excavation and unearths a Rose Tyler action figure!
- enjoys Anglophenia's celebration of Captain Jack's 10 year anniversary!
- ooohs and ahhhs over the art for the upcoming Doctor Who multi-Doctor comics!
Bonus links [also on our site]:
Our ep on the Master's companions
Texts from the TARDIS

TDP 474: Big Finish Main Range 198 - Doctor Who - The Defectors
Tin Dog Podcast@bigfinish #tindogpodcast #doctorwho Synopsis '...it possesses a wonderful nostalgic quality, aided no doubt by the incredible chemistry between, and performances from Sylvester McCoy and Katy Manning... It's absolutely marvellous. In fact it's marvellous with an extra dollop of brilliant on top. More please!' Tim Mass Movement '... well handled concepts and twists alongside strong performances... an entertaining adventure... most effective in the way it blends the action and military intrigue of the Pertwee era with the darker, more ambiguous edge of McCoy's Doctor.' SFX Jo Grant is shocked to find most of her colleagues are missing. Then she discovers that the Doctor has inexplicably changed. But there's no time to worry about it, as she and her misplaced Time Lord friend are whisked to the mysterious Delphin Isle on a matter of national security. There, they encounter a disturbingly odd form of local hospitality and learn of a highly classified incident that took place during the Cold War. Why exactly have they been brought here? And what is the truth concerning the bodies in the harbour and the vast project being undertaken beneath a cloak of secrecy? Written By: Nicholas BriggsDirected By: Nicholas Briggs Cast Sylvester McCoy (The Doctor), Katy Manning (Jo Grant), Richard Franklin (Captain Yates), Neil Roberts (Captain Cornelius), Barnaby Edwards (Commander Wingford), David Graham (Shedgerton), Rachel Bavidge (Europan Leader), Jez Fielder (Europan)

MarkWHO42 - The Doctor Who PodcastWe promised you that our show would go BEYOND and we meant it. This episode we sit down and talk with IDW Comics writer Jim Sorenson. Jim has written plenty on the G.I. Joe and Transformers franchises, but his is also a big fan of Doctor Who. That makes him the perfect person to start off with our new series of talking to celebrity Who fans. So check out how much MORE than meets the eye there is to Jim's work and his love of Doctor Who. Maybe there will be a discussion as to why we shouldn't hate the Michael Bay movies as much as we do. Plus all the latest in Doctor Who news, including the birthday of a Doctor. MarkWHO42. More fun than doing impressions of Optimus Prime, Megatron, and Starscream!
