Smile! That's what the lads are doing whilst they review the second episode of this series of Doctor Who. But are they genuine happy smiling faces that Phil and Paul are sporting or are they the forced smiles that some of the characters were wearing this story? And as this is also Frank Cottrell Boyce's 2nd contribution to Doctor Who, do the lads think this is an improvement on In The Forest of The Night? MUTTER'S SPIRAL Podcast returns to discuss "Smile" (by Frank Cottrell Boyce), episode 2 of Series 10 of DOCTOR WHO. John and I talk about Bill's first "official" trip in the TARDIS, and how her first off-world adventure compares to other "first trips" in the modern era (echoes of Rose, Amy, Clara) and what that could portend for the Doctor-Bill relationship as well as the rest of this series. We will go over the plot, noting similarities to many other works, both inside of DOCTOR WHO and outside, and give opinions on how well the story worked for us.

We will also talk Ratings and the New Doctor Rumor Mill, and there's some excellent trivia this week - I'm forced to use "Eagles Math" to get my score over 50%!

Bill and the Doctor head off in the TARDIS to Wheat World... er Valencia, Spain... er Gliese 581D and meet up with homocidal smiling emoji robot interfaces, while Nardole stays behind on Earth to put the tea kettle on and keep an eye on the mysterious vault. From "Billie's Choice" to post structuralist philopshers to rushed endings, Ben and David chat about what all "Smile" means. Intro music from "Smile" by Murray Gold. Closing music from "Ashes to Ashes" by David Bowie.

from Wiki The Doctor and Nardole have occupied themselves under the guise of a university professor and assistant. Bill Potts is called to the Doctor's office, where Bill becomes the Doctor's student. Bill becomes intrigued by a student named Heather. Heather asks her to inspect a puddle, asking her if she can see what's wrong with her reflection. The Doctor investigates the puddle, and notes that it is not a reflection, but something mimicking them. Bill returns to her flat, and is chased by a moving body of fluid: A living fluid from an alien ship that has absorbed Heather and her feelings for Bill. Bill runs to the Doctor's office and they flee into the TARDIS. The Doctor moves the TARDIS, where he and Nardole check on a vault they are guarding. The TARDIS lands again in Australia, where the Doctor admits who he is. The fluid follows them to another planet in the future, then through a Dalek battle, but survives. Bill convinces "Heather" to let her go, and it departs. The Doctor and Bill return to his office, where he attempts to wipe Bill's memories of the day but she stops him. As Bill leaves, she finds the Doctor waiting with the TARDIS.
