MUTTER'S SPIRAL Podcast 132 - "The Lie of the Land"
Mutter's Spiral PodcastMUTTER'S SPIRAL Podcast this week addresses "The Lie of the Land", the finale to the Monks trilogy, written by Toby Whithouse and directed by Wayne Yip. We were both less than enthused by this episode individually as well as in its role as the culmination of the three-part story. We will go in depth about what didn't work at all for us (as well as some stuff we did like - Missy, Bill's Mom). John also makes some good points about how and why the trilogy doesn't hold together for him (nor me). I lament the loss of the early-season momentum and express my dislike of the Monks in general as foes for the Doctor. There's also trivia, of course!

Audio Ep. 9: Eat Light and Die
Trust Your DoctorSo this is what it has come to, the eaters of light have to die.
This week we decided to walk across a nice little moor in Scotland. We watched as someone just out of view got struck by lightning. It was really weird, there weren’t even clouds in the sky. We ran over and told us a story, the story of Helicon Prime, relayed to him by Jake Elliott. Apparently the story was first told in November of 2007. Helicon Prime can be purchased for $8 (or your local equivalent) on Big Finish's website.
Show-notes:
2:28 Season 6B was the B side to Fraser Hines’ hit single “Got those Season 6 Blues”.
4:46 Did you know America’s Rainforest Cafes are in danger of deforestation? Join the cause today to help save Rainforest Cafe and save dozens of indigenous gift shops and animal puppets.
40:05 This is his Crispin Glover’s face. Why is it so distinct?

Episode 113 Rehabilitation
Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who PodcastThis week, we look at a medium where Colin's reputation as the Doctor is second to none. To that end, Nathan is only pretending to be evil, Brendan has two peglegs, Todd is having a hard time assembling some shelving, and Richard is just a shadow of his former self. It's Colin Baker, in the Big Finish audio adventures!

The stories we discuss this week are all available for download from the Big Finish website.
- Jubilee, by Rob Shearman.
- Doctor Who and the Pirates, by Jacqueline Rayner.
- The One Doctor, by Gareth Roberts and Clayton Hickman.
- The Brink of Death, by Nicholas Briggs, the final story in The Last Adventure box set.
Notes and links
Jubilee
Rob Shearman has written a number of Big Finish audios, and some books, including Love Songs for the Shy and Cynical and Everyone's Just So Special. These are all available from his page on the Big Finish website.
Fans of upsetting and occasionally funny near-future dystopias will enjoy Black Mirror, which is available on Netflix.
As usual, Philip Sandifer has an insighful take on this story, which Nathan is impressed by. Shearman himself comments on the article.
If you're in the mood for a much more harrowing patriarchal dystopia, Hulu has recently made a brilliant TV adaptation of Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale.
Doctor Who and the Pirates
This story was written by Jac Rayner, who has written a number of Doctor Who plays and novels. She also maintains a blog.
The One Doctor
Richard and Nathan both remember watching The Maths Show in primary school, which occasional featured a segment called Doctor Where, in which the Doctor and Sally-Anne explained concepts like scale and probability.
The hapless Fry drinks the emperor of the planet Trisol in the Futurama episode My Three Suns.
The Brink of Death
Michael Jayston starred in a dramatisation of Geoffrey Household's 1939 novel, Rogue Male, in which a British ex-serviceman travels to Europe to assassinate the unnamed dictator of a major power. (Oh, okay, it's probably Hitler.)

You and Who Talking 010
The Doctor Who ShowWhat you are about to hear is the story of a connection, a connection that was made between a television series and a viewer's life.

This podcast will relate some of the stories from those books... and beyond.
In this episode:
Lives, Loves, and (non-Time) Lords by David Busch
With an introduction featuring Rob Irwin talking to JR Southall.
The You and Who books, from which all royalties are paid to charity, are available in print and for Kindle, from watchingbooks.weebly.com

If you’re in the mood for a much more harrowing patriarchal dystopia, Hulu has recently made a brilliant TV adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale.
Michael Jayston starred in a dramatisation of Geoffrey Household’s 1939 novel, Rogue Male, in which a British ex-serviceman travels to Europe to assassinate the unnamed dictator of a major power. (Oh, okay, it’s probably Hitler.)
