Who's He? Podcast 441 | Doctor Who - The Anniversary Specials | The Day of The Doctor
Who's He?In this episode of the Who's He? Podcast....
Doctor Who - The Anniversary Specials | The Day of The Doctor
We finish our look back at Doctor Who anniversary specials of years gone by with the 50th anniversary special, The Day of The Doctor. Not only do Phil and Paul look back fondly at the 50th anniversary and the excitement and anticipation that went with it 10 years ago, they also decided to read the Target novelisation of this story. With the television script and the novel being written by Steven Moffat, the lads were expecting something brilliant.
What you will listen to on this podcast may well divide opinion but Phil and Paul were both in complete agreement about the Target novel and the TV version. But what is this alignment of opinion, which way does it go? You know what's coming next..... listen to find out!
You can find us on Twitter and Facebook and you can subscribe to our show on Apple Podcasts/iTunes, Spotify, Amazon Podcasts, Google Podcasts plus many other podcatchers and don't forget to subscribe to our Youtube Channel.

The Planet Quantos
Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who PodcastThis week, we’re hanging out in a mystical London street full of Sontarans, Judoon and Cybermen, investigating a murder with Johnny Spandrell — only to find, to our horror, that the murder hasn’t happened yet. And, of course, that it’s time for Clara Oswald to Face the Raven.
Notes and links
Fridging or Women in Refrigerators is a trope in which a woman is murdered and the emotions of her male parent/lover/friend become more important to the narrative than the death of the woman herself. This article from The Guardian discusses its use in Strangers, an ITV drama in which our very own Devla Kirwan’s death evokes trauma in her husband, our very own John Simm.
You can find links to the videos shot by Rufus Hound during the shooting of The Woman Who Lived in the shownotes for Flight Through Entirety Episode 272: John Scott Martin in a Zarbi Suit.
China Miéville’s novel Kraken (2010) also depicts a London with secret hidden streets, these ones full of monsters and cultists. (It also features a villain called the Tattoo, who is literally a crazed sentient tattoo.)
Rigsy’s offscreen girlfriend Jen, who we hear on the phone but don’t see, is played by Naomi Ackie, who goes on to star as Whitney Houston in the 2022 biopic Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody.
And here’s a story in Entertainment Weekly about the controversy surrounding Letitia Wright’s weird tweet about the Covid vaccine.
And if you’re feeling down, you should cheer yourself up with this 2015 story from The Guardian about Jeremy Clarkson’s cancellation.

Nathan is on X as @nathanbottomley, Brendan is @brandybongos, Simon is @simonmoore72, and Johnny is @JohnnySpandrell. The Flight Through Entirety theme was arranged by Cameron Lam. You can follow the podcast on X at @FTEpodcast.
We’re also on Facebook, Mastodon, and Bluesky, and you can check out our website at flightthroughentirety.com. Please consider rating or reviewing us on Apple Podcasts, or we’ll hack Google Maps and render your entire street completely fictional.
And more
On 27 November we’ll be launching a Doctor Who flashcast called The Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire. Like Jodie into Terror before it, The Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire will be released a day or two after each new episode of Doctor Who and will contain our ill-considered and half-baked initial reactions to the episode. Keep an eye out on the new podcast website or on our social media accounts for details.
Our second newest podcast is Startling Barbara Bain, our Space: 1999 commentary podcast, whose first episode was released just a couple of weeks ago. In that episode, we talked over the show’s pilot Breakaway, in which the moon is hurled from its orbit by a terrible nuclear explosion. We’re hoping to release Episode 2 next weekend.
Maximum Power is continuing its journey through Series C of Blakes 7. This week, the crew of the Liberator run into a strangely disappointing figure from Auron mythology in Dawn of the Gods.
And finally, there’s our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. This week, they watched perhaps the worst episode of the entire Star Trek franchise, the Star Trek: Voyager episode Threshold.

The 60th Anniversary Specials - Previewed!
The Doctor Who PodcastNot long to wait now! Join Michele, Phil and James as they jump on board the campervan to (loosely!) preview the upcoming Anniversary Specials The Star Beast, Wild Blue Yonder and The Giggle.
Whilst nothing was off the table from a spoiler perspective, story elements were not discussed – mainly because no-one knew any! However, if you have a *very* low spoiler threshold, you may want to back this edition up until after broadcast.
We’ll be back after The Star Beast has aired next weekend. Or possibly sooner if you are very fortunate….. keep your eyes peeled on the Campervan’s feed!
Please note – this episode was recorded (just a few hours!) before the 2023 Children In Need scene featuring the 14th Doctor – therefore it will be discussed on an upcoming episode of the DWP.
Enjoy the show.

Episode 570 – Lost in the Dark Dimension
Traveling the VortexWe mark the 60th Anniversary of Doctor Who this week with what could have been a 30th Anniversary special back in 1993. We are talking about the fabled Doctor Who lost media known as the Dark Dimension.
First, we look at a fan-made animated imagining of the special with Season 26B Productions’ Lost in the Dark Dimension.
We’ll also compare another fan production, Pharos Features’ Doctor Who: Dark Dimension, an audio drama presentation of the story.
We use these as a way to imagine what might have been and decide, in our minds what they might have gotten right and what they might have gotten wrong.
Plus we talk about the news of the week.
Enjoy!

TDP 1212: #DoctorWho Doctor Who: The Fifth Doctor Adventures: In the Night
Tin Dog Podcasthis title was released in September 2023. It will be exclusively available to buy from the Big Finish website until 31 October 2023, and on general sale after this date. The Doctor, Nyssa and Tegan find themselves trapped in history - and discover that even the most familiar of pasts can still conceal surprises. 1. Pursuit of the Nightjar by Tim Foley (4 parts) The story of the Nightjar has been told for many years. A spaceship helmed by the legendary Captain Goben on a vital mission of mercy, delivering medical supplies to a distant colony in the middle of devastating war, an act of bravery that triggers the end of the conflict. At her heels throughout the journey, her pursuer, the spaceship Nemesis, helmed by the dogged Captain Eslo, never quite able to catch her target. The Doctor has always wanted to witness these historic events. And now, alongside Nyssa and Tegan, he's got his chance. But history might just have other ideas. 2. Resistor by Sarah Grochala (2 parts) The TARDIS lands in a basement beneath a club in Warsaw in 1982 - which is a bit of a surprise as the Doctor was hoping to take Nyssa and Tegan to Yugoslavia. But a bigger surprise is yet to come - the band on stage are missing one of their musicians. And getting them through the gig is only the start of the TARDIS crew's troubles. Something strange is happening on the streets. Black cars glide through the city, picking off the unwary. Some are driven by the Secret Police... but others... by something very much not of this world.

The Cappuccino Thing
Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who PodcastThis week, in orbit of the Planet Neptune, a Doctor Who story is created which kills literally everyone who watches it. Which is why we should probably have thought twice before inviting the lovely Jeremy Radick to discuss it with us.
Notes and links
Steven Moffat’s version of Dracula (2020) is actually Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss’s version of Dracula. It stars the beautiful and terrifying Claes Bang in the title role, and it features the full complement of Moffat and Gatiss tropes, which will either be to your taste or not.
And The Ring (2002) — a remake of the Japanese film Ringu (1998) — also contains a video which will kill all the people who watch it. (In seven days. It’s nice to have a definite timeline.)
Nathan and Erik Stadnik also share a birthday with Samuel Anderson. Forgot to mention that.
Follow us
Nathan is on X as @nathanbottomley, James is @ohjamessellwood, Simon is @simonmoore72, and Jeremy is @JeremyRadick. The Flight Through Entirety theme was arranged by Cameron Lam. You can follow the podcast on X at @FTEpodcast.
We’re also on Facebook, Mastodon, and Bluesky, and you can check out our website at flightthroughentirety.com. Please consider rating or reviewing us on Apple Podcasts, or we’ll start monetising your toilet breaks, thereby creating one of the most horrific Doctor Who monsters imaginable.
And more
Our newest podcast is Startling Barbara Bain, our Space: 1999 commentary podcast, whose first episode was released just a couple of weeks ago. In that episode, we talked over the show’s pilot Breakaway, in which the moon is hurled from its orbit by a terrible nuclear explosion.
Maximum Power is continuing its journey through Series C of Blakes 7. This week, the crew of the Liberator encounter some pacifists with a surprisingly deadly weapon in the third episode, Volcano.
And finally, there’s our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. This week, we went back to Star Trek: Lower Decks for a violent and extremely cathartic holodeck episode called Crisis Point.

Episode 569 – The Quest to Find the Most Important Thing in the Universe
Traveling the VortexWe’ve changed things up this week. We had intended to do another Fun & Games episode, but we could not get things lined up to play the RPG. So, we have delayed that until next month, and instead, we review Titan’s recently released graphic novel, Once Upon a Time Lord featuring the Tenth Doctor and Martha.
Plus we talk about some recent news including the speculation that Paul McGann will be reprising his role as the Eighth Doctor in an upcoming series.
Enjoy!

Cinema Quickies are simply that, Eric and friends' hot take having just walked out of the theater. Dive in and discover if he goes type O Neg or Pos!
- I said, "behind the screen" when I meant, "behind the camera".
- This rant was recorded without a script on iPhone Pro 14 | October 26, 2023.
- This was a light drizzle at times while recording.
WARNING:
- This discussion contains miscellaneous SPOILERS pertaining to the film(s) discussed and occasionally Doctor Who! If you are 100% spoilerphobic to films not yet seen, do not complain to us. TDP 1210: #DoctorWho 3.2. Doctor Who: The Ninth Doctor Adventures: Travel in Hope
Tin Dog PodcastThis title was released in August 2023. It will be exclusively available to buy from the Big Finish website until 31 October 2023, and on general sale after this date. The Doctor crosses paths with many travellers - some at the start of their journey, some well on their way. From the remote nodes of a transmat network, to solving crimes at a spaceship service station, or helping a friend climb the political ladder - sometimes the journey is more interesting, and more dangerous, than the destination... 2.1 Below There by Lauren Mooney and Stewart Pringle Vyx works on a teleport relay station in the darkest depths of space - and she’s afraid. Strange voices crackle through comms channels, shapes gather outside the starless viewing ports, and visions of death and destruction plague her dreams. Then she gets a call from the Doctor, who warns Vyx that her worst nightmares are about to become a reality. 2.2 The Butler Did It by James Moran The Doctor lands at a spaceship repair port on a dusty planet to tune up the TARDIS engines. But someone has poisoned an old friend of his, and now everyone at the station is a suspect. It's time to round up the clues, get out the magnifying glass - or sonic screwdriver - and check the butler's alibi... 2.3 Run by Robert Valentine When heinous demagogue Bellatrix Vega threatens the stability of the Galactic Federation, the Doctor convinces newly elected representative Alpha Centauri to run against her for president. As Vega’s team mount a campaign of dirty tricks, the Doctor and Alpha must thwart a murderous conspiracy or see the galaxy’s greatest democracy become a brutal dictatorship.
