What you are about to hear is the story of a connection, a connection that was made between a television series and a viewer's life.

The You and Who books are the story of that connection, as told by the people who watch the programmes that make us come alive. Chiefly, of course, Doctor Who.

This podcast will relate some of the stories from those books... and beyond.

    In this episode:

The Magic Dragon - Doctor Who and the Crusaders written and read by Stephen Hatcher

When Saturday comes, it's a new Doctor Who. But the trailers are worryingly monster-free. Even though the story seems to be set on Pluto (at that time young Ben's favourite planet), how could a story succeed with no monsters? And with that annoying robot dog too. It was with trepidation that, as the football scores faded away, that Ben turned to watch Doctor Who. This is a flashback Metebelis 2 podcast on The Sun Makers. The opening song is Status Quo's 1977 hit "Rockin' All Over The World" and closing music is from Dudley Simpson's score for The Sun Makers.

TDP 720: #DoctorWho TIMEWAR_BOX 1 from @BigFinish Synopsis This title was released in October 2017. It will be exclusively available to buy from the BF website until December 31st 2017, and on general sale after this date. "10/10 This feels exactly like the Time War series should. It separates itself from the Doom Coalition or any of the previous 8th stories and sets and gives you a distinct style whilst honouring who the 8th Doctor has to be until that fateful night."- IndieMacUser "This set is the Doctor many listeners have wanted. Though the circumstances may be grim, it would be churlish not to enjoy it." We Are Cult "Matt Fitton has penned an extremely worthy and unique Dalek story, and it's one that should go down in history within the Doctor Who fandom... I'd say that The Starship of Theseus is like a cross of some of the best Tenth Doctor episodes; it has an overall feel of Voyage of The Damned, with some of the mystery from Planet of The Ood, and the terrifying aspects of Midnight. Perfection." - Gallifrey Archive "With incredible performances from all involved, strong direction, and evocative and powerful sound design, the shifts in tone and scale are handled with ease and create a thoroughly rewarding experience from beginning to end." - Doctor Who Reviews "10/10 It's the start of a whole new era for the Eighth Doctor and this box set is certainly a brilliant way to start it! An exceptional cast, praiseworthy original story-telling and outstanding cinematic music score." - The Host Productions "10/10 - Since its announcement back in 2015, the Eighth Doctor's Time War series has been among Big Finish's most anticipated releases. Series one certainly doesn't disappoint. The writing team of Dorney and Fitton lay out a series that takes Doctor Who far outside its comfort zone. With strong performances all around, 'The Eighth Doctor: The Time War' is an essential piece of listening for any Doctor Who fan and the beginning of something that sounds to be truly unmissable." - Blogtor Who The Eighth Doctor battles for survival in the Time War: 1. The Starship of Theseus by John Dorney The Doctor and his companion, Sheena, land the TARDIS on the glamorous luxury space-liner Theseus just as it's about to leave the Jupiter space-port. An opportunity for a holiday presents itself - and it's one they're very glad to take. But when a disturbance catches their attention, they realise sinister events are taking place on board. Passengers are vanishing on every trip. And unless they're careful they may be next. Can the Doctor and Emma solve the mystery? Or is there something else they should be worrying about? 2. Echoes of War by Matt Fitton Colliding with the full force of the Time War, the Doctor crash-lands on a jungle world with a ragtag band of refugees. To stay alive, they must cross a landscape where time itself is corrupted. A forest which cycles through growth and decay, where sounds of battle are never far away, and where strange creatures lurk all around. Luckily, the Doctor has friends: not only plucky scientist Bliss, but another, much more unlikely ally. Its name is 'Dal'... 3. The Conscript by Matt Fitton Cardinal Ollistra has a new tactic to persuade the Doctor to join his people's fight. With his friends locked away, he has been conscripted alongside fellow Gallifreyans to train for the front lines of battle. Commandant Harlan has a reputation - his camp's regime is harsh. He believes the Time Lords must adapt to win this war, but the Doctor is not easily intimidated. Can there be any place for dissent when the Time War looms so close? 4. One Life by John Dorney As the full force of the Time War crashes down around the Doctor and his friends, a desperate battle for survival ensues. But not everyone is playing the same game. Ollistra is after a weapon that could end the war in a stroke and she'll sacrifice anyone or anything to take it back to Gallifrey. Even the Doctor. Surrounded by Daleks, and on a tortured planet, only one man can save the day. But he doesn't want to fight. A special run of prequels to Doctor Who: The War Doctor. Producer David Richardson Script Editor Ken Bentley Executive Producers Jason Haigh-Ellery and Nicholas Briggs Written By: John Dorney, Matt Fitton Directed By: Ken Bentley Cast Paul McGann (The Doctor), Olivia Vinall (Sheena), Nimmy March (Rupa Maguire), David Ganly (Quarren Maguire), Sean Murray (Captain Darvor), Hywel Morgan (Koloth / Jefferson), Laurence Kennedy (Purser Lunney / Aymor / Chancellor), Rakhee Thakrar (Bliss), Karina Fernandez (Captain Tamasan), Jacqueline Pearce (Ollistra), Nick Brimble (Commander Harlan), Katy Sobey (Veeda), Okezie Morro (Norvid), and Nicholas Briggs (Dal / Dalek Commander / Dalek Drone / Daleks). Big Blue Box Podcast - Episode 164

Hey Who fans. Welcome back and our continuation of revisits month. Sad news to kick off this show, light merch then onto our re-look at Pyramids...

    The News

Sadly, two people people from Classic Who leave us this week; amazing composer of many serials Dudley Simpson passes away aged 95 and director (of our review story in fact) Paddy Russell passes away aged 89. In lighter/funnier (but naughtier) news Doctor Who Magazine writer Nicholas Pegg gets fired for hiding a secret message in his last article.

    Merch Corner

Dalek Tat throws us this week - Big Finish announce Torchwood 5 - Aliens Among Us Part 3 for a February 2018 release.

    "Pyramids of Mars" Review

Garry reviewed this solo way (way way way) back in episode 3! It's now a great time for your TARDIS Team to re-look at it together and give you their thoughts on this often highly regarded classic. Thank you so much as always for listening and sending us your reviews. Revisits Month keeps on rolling next week where we're looking at The TV Movie so grab those dvds/or blu rays! Until then have a super week and remember - Allons-y!

This week, we take a look at Earthshock (the Season 19, Fifth Doctor story from 1982) and we lift the lid on the long-concealed scandal of overenthusiastic sentry-extras in Doctor Who.

Along the way, we take a good look at coarse acrostics, David Banks’s career as a soap star and Beryl Reid’s lookalike. And, if any of you think that a school bully breaking one of his toys in Hayden’s book was the most heartbreaking thing you’ve ever heard about, then our swerve down the side road of the Planet of the Apes TV Series from 1974 and how it inspired a young Mark’s imagination may well leave you in tears.

    (00:01:19)

(00:16:24) Out of the Silent Planet is a science fiction novel by the British author C. S. Lewis, published in 1938. Two sequels, Perelandra and That Hideous Strength were published in 1943 and 1945, completing the so-called Cosmic Trilogy or The Space Trilogy.

(00:40:17) L!VE TV was a British television station that was operated by Mirror Group Newspapers on cable television from 12 June 1995 until 5 November 1999. It was later revived for Sky from 2003. In 2006, the new L!VE TV’s name was changed to Babeworld to reflect the channel’s gradual change of focus towards “adult material”.

(00:40:35) L!VE TV’s content included “Canary Wharf”, a soap opera, which used the station’s offices in the Docklands as a set and starred none other than the Cyberleader himself David Banks. David’s climactic scene starts 03:10 into this clip.

(00:44:10) “Planet of the Apes” is an American science fiction television series that aired on CBS in 1974. The series stars Roddy McDowall, Ron Harper, James Naughton, Mark Lenard and Booth Colman. It is based on the 1968 Planet of the Apes film and its sequels, which were inspired by the novel Planet of the Apes by Pierre Boulle. The series starred Roddy McDowall as Galen, a young chimpanzee that is sent by Zaius with Urko to ensure the safety of two humans that have survived a crash landing on Earth. McDowall previously played Cornelius and Caesar throughout the various film versions. Mark’s Galen doll, now sadly lost to a tragically heroic death by a laser defence system, can be seen here.

(01:01:00) The “cold open” song from Craig Ferguson’s show can be found here.

(01:11:48) Hylda Baker (4 February 1905 - 1 May 1986) was an English comedian, actress and music hall performer. Born and brought up in Farnworth, Lancashire, she is perhaps most well known for her role as Nellie Pledge in the ITV sitcom Nearest and Dearest (1968-73) and for her role in the 1960 film Saturday Night and Sunday Morning.

(01:12:08) British comedians Arthur Mullard and Hylda Baker released a version of the “You’re the One That I Want” in 1978 which reached Number 22 in the UK charts.

(01:12:49) “Not On Your Nellie” is a British sitcom that ran from 1974 until 1975. It starred veteran actress Hylda Baker as Nellie Pickersgill, a Bolton woman who moves to London to help run her ailing father’s Chelsea pub. Seventeen episodes of the series were produced by London Weekend Television for the ITV network.

(01:14:56) Our suggestions of what the cyber sentries are gossiping about can be found on our Tumblr page here. The scene of the overenthusiastic Tommy from “The Pandorica Opens” can be found on our Tumblr page here.

Typically, we use this lead-in moment to identify some sort of parallel between the classic story we’ve been returning to, and the daily lives we lead. Sometimes, it’s the connection between the television adventure, and our own socio-political climate. Perhaps a dissertation on the disparity between the haves and the have-nots. It could even be a study on the way we deal with trauma, near-death experiences, or the futility of war. And sometimes, we throw all that aside, and say, […]
