    That’s pretty smartly brah.

Arrrrrr mateys. This week we’re here for a special pirate themed episode of Trust Your Doctor, where we do absolutely none of the following: Neglect to bathe for a month, talk like a pirate in broken english, use strange pirate slang that fell out of use years ago, neglect to shave for years on end. It’s The Curse of the Black Spot, written by Steve Thompson and aired on May 7, 2011.

    Show-notes:

1:52 Henry Avery stole from a Mughal fleet in 1695.
    5:53 Klaus Badelt
7:50 It might’ve been quicker to look him up in the phone book, but it wouldn’t have been as cool.
8:23 I can’t find the edit anywhere anymore. It was on Youtube for sure. If you can find it, email us.
10:56 According to History Channel, pirates didn’t actually make people walk the plank.
16:24 More about Chinese treasure ships.
16:58 Chinese eunuchs often opposed court scholars and had a lot of political power.
17:47 Mostly Made Up Doctor Who Episode Guide is one of the best Doctor Podcasts out there right now. Go listen to it.
31:24 The Lost city of Z is a 2009 book by David Grann.
33:23 This article explains why Europeans were barely affected by American diseases. Basically, Europe was so disease ridden that they had better immune systems. Syphilis is though to have come to Europe from the Americas though.

This week, Brendan, Richard and Nathan are cowering in the Anderson shelter in the backyard, listening to the sirens and wondering what on earth happened to that nice little tow-headed lad from number seventeen. Turn off your mobile phones and keep your hands and feet inside the light field — it’s The Empty Child.

Reference is of course made to several of Steven Moffat’s shows: the surpassingly brilliant Press Gang — when are we doing the Press Gang podcast? — and Coupling, which is not Moffat’s first attempt at sex comedy (see also Joking Apart, or don’t), but is definitely his most successful.

Fans of things with Daleks in them will enjoy Dark Eyes, another Big Finish box set extravaganza starring Paul McGann and some people, and some mutants in bonded polycarbide armour. It’s good, apparently.

Richard refers to John Boorman’s 1987 film Hope and Glory about a nine-year-old boy’s experience of growing up in London during the Blitz.

Big Finish again. Brendan refers to Joe Lidster’s The Siege of Big Ben, a Short Trips release read by Camille Coduri. He also mentions Erasure, which makes a cheeky reference to the original unfilmable script The Killer Cats of Gin-Seng, a story ultimately replaced by The Invasion of Time.

Ben and Mark talk a load of bull in their fruity Scottish accents as they reach The God Complex and pair it up with 1979's The Horns of Nimon. Expect Brexit metaphors, an impassioned defence of a much maligned classic, an embarrassing defeat in Degsey's Where Did it Come Game, the differing approaches to the comedy of Douglas Adams and appreciation for an animatronic minotaur, Amara Khan, Rory Williams and Lalla Ward. Praise them. Also this week: Ben and Mark discuss The Ghost Monument, the new TARDIS, and ponder where the new merchandise for the kiddies has disappeared to.

    "The Ghost Monument" Review

With the much-hyped Series 11 opener out the way, we're into our first proper adventure. Does Jodie's second story carry the momentum or is this one a bit flat, like, talking tissue paper flat? Thank you so much for joining us for 206. Next week it's more of the same with the third ep - Rosa. Until then have a brilliant week and until next time - Allons-y!
