DIDDLY DUM PODCAST 109 – Helen A, Milk Snatcher?
Diddly Dum PodcastAs a sign that the High Council of the Doctor Who Appreciation Society have short memories, they have once again kindly invited the Diddly Dum Podcast to be the official podcast of their Capitol IV convention on 27/28 April this year.
This week, we take a look at Seventh Doctor story “The Happiness Patrol” from 1988. Along the way, the late Graeme Curry is celebrated at Hayden’s workplace (of all places), Mark agonises over the temptations of a 7-disc vinyl set of Dalek Master Plan and we decide that our favourite flavour of Candyman execution is Splatter Orange.

(00:48:36) The “Metropolissy with lightning” cover art which Doc is remembering but wrongly attributing to “Paranoia” is actually this cover art for “Deus Ex Machina”, the video game by Automata from the 1980s discussed in our podcast 007 (at 00:12:00) and our podcast 069 at (00:19:48). That game contained voiceovers by Jon Pertwee himself, the audio files of which can be found on our blog here.

Red Dawn
Doctor WhoochIn which we learn that Danica takes nicknames very seriously.
We're in the midst of the dry season (also known as "all of 2019, probably) with no new Doctor Who television content in sight, so we're continuing to explore the vast riches of other media... this time, with Big Finish audio! On this week's episode, we listen to an Eighth Doctor adventure, Blood of the Daleks, that has some similarities to a pair of episodes from the Russel "The" Davies run.
As always, if you haven't listened to the audio itself, don't worry! You'll get all the info you need, except drunk. It's fine. Trust us.
Outro music is "Ghetto Supastar" by Pras feat. Ol' Dirty Bastard & Mya

Episode 152: Snakedance OR A Side of Mara-Nara Sauce
PodcasticaThe Mara, done chillin’ in the recesses of Tegan’s mind, sets our team on an adventure to Manussa where he’s/it’s (I double checked its gender) determined to return to full strength in a move worthy of Voldemort. However, all it’s armed with (pun...snakes have no arms) is a ritual and a crystal stolen from the hood of an 84 Chrysler LeBaron convertible. John and Taylor are back to review the 5th Doctor story Snakedance! Originally suggested by friend-of-the-show Mike, it was feared this might be a trap of pure bonkers. Instead, John found himself completely under the spell of the Mara and completely loved this story. Will you be equally enamored? You'll have to listen to find out!

#109 - Student Theatre
Doctor Who: The Metebelis 2Ben and David are glad to visit Terra Alpha to see the Candyman. Will happiness prevail? Ben is reminded of the many student plays he saw during the 1980s with minimalist sets, elaborate costumes, and hints of Kafka mixed with a rather subtly riff on Thatcher in this 1988 story. David, for his part, can barely remember watching this in 1990 and finds in this rewatch the story is better than the little he could recall and could potentially is due for a remake. Opening and closing music is from Dominic Glynn's score for The Happiness Patrol.

Episode 243: Elon Musk’s New “Innovation”
Trust Your DoctorHow many things has Elon invented now?
Trust Your Doctor is a complex beast. We record in an office so sparse and huge it’s comparable to the TARDIS itself. We even have a whole room just singularly dedicated to cotton candy. Like. It’s just walls and walls of cotton candy machines. That’s all that’s in there. This is a 100% true fact. It’s Journey to the Center of the TARDIS, written by Steve Thompson and aired on April 20, 2013.
Show-notes:
0:37 The Rock was actually in the sequel to the 2008 Journey to the center of the Earth, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.
1:19 Michael Caine on Jaws: The Revenge: “No [I haven’t seen it]. But I have seen the house it bought for my mum. It’s fantastic.”
1:49 Check out our discussion of Iron Man on our other podcast Triple Play.
14:09 Challenger was the one in 1986 that blew up when it took off. Columbia was the one that blew up when it was coming back in 2003.
25:22 Not gonna link the 2018 Slender man trailer again. That thing gave me nightmares last week. Instead have this harmless wikipedia link.
33:49 Free Solo is a movie about a guy who climbs mountains without equipment.
40:43 Here’s the documentary from 1986.
47:10 Young Goodman Brown.

Already Completely Abominable
Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who PodcastThis week, for the first time in ages, Todd, Nathan, James and Richard arrive on an exotic yet strangely familiar alien planet, where they meet some old friends and a terrifying new enemy. Oh, okay, it’s cats. Welcome to 2006, and welcome to New Earth.
Notes and links
Listeners alarmed by Richard’s reference to the Big Chief 12-inch dolly of Billie Piper will only be more alarmed when they check it out on the Big Chief website.
Adjoa Andoh plays Casca in the Bridge Theatre’s production of Julius Caesar, which is actually still running, and which also features our very own David Morrissey.
