Episode 21: The Well-Mannered War
The Doctor Who Book Club PodcastThis month we bring you our discussion of the Virgin Missing Adventure The Well-Mannered War by Gareth Roberts, author of two other Missing Adventures, The Romance of Crime and The English Way of Death, as well as the screenwriter for the television episodes "The Shakespeare Code", "The Unicorn and the Wasp", "The Lodger", and "Closing Time". From the back cover:
'Destroy them! Destroy them all - now!"
Barclow - an Earth-type planet on the fringes of space at an inestimably distant point in the future. Two factions have laid claim to it: humans from the nearby colony world of Metralubit, and a small group of Chelonian troopers. But in nearly two hundred years of conflict not one shot has been fired in anger, there are regular socials in the trenches, and the military commanders are the best of friends.
The Doctor, Romana, and K-9, arriving in the midst of these bizarre hostilities, find there's real trouble to come. A crucial election on Metralubit is looming, and K-9 is forced to begin a new career as a politician. Meanwhile, Romana meets an old friend and the Doctor discovers that a sinister hidden force may be attempting to alter the war's friendly nature.
What are the plans of Galatea, leader of the beautiful but robotic Femdroids? Who is killing soldiers on both sides of the battle lines? And will K-9's oratory save the day?
Just what is going on?
The "old friend" mentioned above happens to be Menlove Stokes, who previously appeared in Roberts' The Romance of Crime. The Well-Mannered War is notable because it is the last of the Virgin Missing Adventures, published in 1997 as the BBC was preparing to publish its own series of novels featuring past Doctors and an entirely new series with the Eighth Doctor to replace Virgin's New Adventures.
Pour yourself a tankard of Chelonian grog and sit back and relax as we discuss The Well-Mannered War!

The rusted chains of prison moons
Who's He?This week the lads turn their attention to the Mark Gatiss story The Crimson Horror, the latest in this series of Doctor Who. What will they make of this Victorian romp in deepest, darkest Yorkshire with corpses in the canal and the return of the Paternoster Gang? One thing is for sure though, Paul is Mister Grumpy this week which makes a nice change from Phil!
And in the news this week, a brief summing up of the Who's He? Podcast's trip to the BFI to see The Caves of Androzani, the UK's Doctor Who DVD roster for the remainder of the year, the return of Omega's Tat Corner and a chance for Phil to let rip on those who think fans are being short changed with their percieved lack of Doctor Who content for the 50th Anniversary.

Episode 174: Vortex Manipulating Rabbits
The Sonic ToolboxSo, the first half of the show got taken over by rabbits. We're not sure how it happened, maybe somebody left the door to the hutch unlocked, but we had to do an awful lot of chasing them down. The second half of the show is all about time travel by means other than the TARDIS. We really get in depth into how things work and the difference between time travel in the TARDIS and time travel via Vortex Manipulator.
WARNING: Contains rabbit chasing

Episode 63: Dropping Some Dope Morality
Trust Your DoctorDope: adjective, informal: very good.
This week Kiyan and Dylan explain the triumphant return and subsequent loss of the Daleks. They tried to exterminate any tangents before they got too big, but some of them were too powerful. Day of the Daleks aired in January of 1972 and was written by Louis Marks.

Bigger on the Inside - Episode 116
Bigger on the InsideThe Doctor must unravel the mystery of a man claiming to be The Doctor, all while stopping the Cybermen from destroying London in 1851 ("The Next Doctor"). Then, a pleasant bus ride turns into a nightmare when a hole in space threatens the Earth ("Planet of the Dead"). Dan and Mike also discuss two Doctor Who shorts: "Music of the Spheres" and a segment from Tonight's the Night. The guys read through lots of e-mails, bemoan poor special effects and costumes, and sort of disagree about one of the stories. Also, Mike makes a call for donations. Please listen for details, then follow this link if you wish to contribute: www.earth-2.net/donations.php.

GSN PODCAST: Scrolls V.2, Chapter 1: New Beginnings
Geek SyndicateScrolls is dead. Long live Scrolls! We've had a hell of a lot of fun burbling away about various topics over the last three years, but its time for a fresh start. The gang are all here still, and the focus of the podcast remains on our favourite genres of books but we've shifted format in an effort to become more listener friendly and provide you with more books worth reading. What does that mean? In a nutshell, we've split the programme into segments and gone out of our way to get contributions from a much wider group of people. Some features will be regular, others will drop in and out as the mood takes us, but our ever constant guide will be the love of and discussion about books. And cake. Obviously.
This first episode kicks off with a general round up of what we're Reading Right Now, including input from our Twitter followers. You can use the hash-tag #RRNow to contribute to this infrequent but ongoing conversation. It doesn't have to be an essay, just let us know what you're reading, who it's by and why you think other listeners would like to read it. Alternatively, if you'd like to submit a longer review, send it to scrolls@hotmail.co.uk and we'll read it out.
Next up is the Author Interview, in which Phil talks with dark fantasist and environmental horror supremo Joseph D'Lacey about his career - past, present and future. If you have an author you would like us to interview in the future, e-mail your suggestions to scrolls@hotmail.co.uk and we'll see what we can do.
We then unveil the results of our first Flash Fiction competition - a monthly challenge open to all-comers. The best three entries are read out, we discuss their merits and choose a winner. Listen out also for next month's challenge. Your deadline will be 8:30 pm, Thursday 16th May. The top three will be published on the Geek Syndicate website each month and the winner will receive a book. Need your fix more regularly? Pop along to Thrills, Kills 'n' Chaos or join Colleen Foley at the Prediction for weekly Flash fun.
After setting the next month's challenge, it's Author's Delight. Wolfblood creator and novelist Debbie Moon joins us briefly to share one of her all-time favourite reads. This will be another regular feature, highlighting the books that authors rate most highly. Next Episode we'll be joined by Adam Christopher. Any other authors out there who want to take part in future episodes, just e-mail us at scrolls@hotmail.co.uk or tweet @Dion_Scrolls
We wrap things up with The Big Debate. The team settle down to chew over the toughest of topics and try to get each other to swallow their arguments. It may be an exercise in futility, but we love wrangling with words almost as much as reading them. This'll likely be a fixture in every episode. If you have a topic you want to set us for the future then e-mail it to us at scrolls@hotmail.co.uk then stand well back.
More ways to interact! Scrolls now has a Skype answerphone set up, so if you want to contact us about any of the above topics, suggest new segments, have your own dulcet tone appear on the podcast or simply give us feedback, then call us at dion.winton.polak any time of day. It seems to work...
(Remember, the Editor is magic, so don't panic)Love listening to Clover's laughter? Visit Stacey's Pop Culture Parlour where Clover is her latest guest. Between giggles they talk about a whole bunch of topics that are not book related and one or two that are.
Last, but not least, we welcome feedback in the Comments section, especially from people who have never been in touch before.
