This is a special edition of Reality Bomb remembering a special person: Paul Condon, who died late last week. Paul was brilliant, funny, thoughtful, mischievous and kind. He was a much-loved Doctor Who fan and we're paying tribute to him by presenting two interviews he did: the first (from episode 048) was recorded the day after Jodie Whittaker was cast as Paul explained who Jodie Whittaker was and what to watch of her work. The second is a Gallery of the Underrated from episode 047 as Paul explains why he thinks Delta and the Bannermen should get more love -- and offers a mind-blowing interpretation of what actually happened in that story.

First off, quick production note: For whatever reason, I kept calling Malorie Blackman “Marjorie Blackman” in my review. And I have no idea why. I might’ve just been nervous from not having recorded in so long. Or I might’ve been struggling with having less notes in front of me than I usually do. I’m not sure. Either way, I deeply apologize for getting her name wrong. How embarrassing!

Anyway, aside from all that, this is honestly a difficult episode for me to publish. As I stated in my ‘State of the Podcast’ blog post, I try my very best to keep things on my show (mostly) positive and try to look for the best in the show. But, at the end of the day, I also have to be honest about my reactions and so, after a lot of soul searching, I made this episode chatting about my feelings in regards to Series 11. And, yes, many of those feelings are negative. So, if that’s something you’re avoiding, being that my intention is to not kill people’s squee, this might possibly be an episode to skip. I do hope you give it a listen, though. I did my best to frame my criticisms as fairly as I could and also tried my best not to devolve into just mindless ranting.

Also, on a positive note, I discuss what is on the horizon for my show, with a series where I’m going to be rejuvenating the podcast by indulging in far more positive chats about my favorite show.

Anyway, again, I hope you will all join me as I talk about through some pretty hard feelings from this past season of Doctor Who -- along with some bonus Happy Fandom Time squee in there, to temper any angst, of course!

First off, quick production note: For whatever reason, I kept calling Malorie Blackman “Marjorie Blackman” in my review. And I have no idea why. I might’ve just been nervous from not having recorded in so long. Or I might’ve been struggling with having less notes in front of me than I usually do. I’m not sure. Either way, I deeply apologize for getting her name wrong. How embarrassing!

Anyway, aside from all that, this is honestly a difficult episode for me to publish. As I stated in my ‘State of the Podcast’ blog post, I try my very best to keep things on my show (mostly) positive and try to look for the best in the show. But, at the end of the day, I also have to be honest about my reactions and so, after a lot of soul searching, I made this episode chatting about my feelings in regards to Series 11. And, yes, many of those feelings are negative. So, if that’s something you’re avoiding, being that my intention is to not kill people’s squee, this might possibly be an episode to skip. I do hope you give it a listen, though. I did my best to frame my criticisms as fairly as I could and also tried my best not to devolve into just mindless ranting.

Also, on a positive note, I discuss what is on the horizon for my show, with a series where I’m going to be rejuvenating the podcast by indulging in far more positive chats about my favorite show.

Anyway, again, I hope you will all join me as I talk about through some pretty hard feelings from this past season of Doctor Who -- along with some bonus Happy Fandom Time squee in there, to temper any angst, of course!

This week, we take a look at Earthshock (the Season 19, Fifth Doctor story from 1982) and we lift the lid on the long-concealed scandal of overenthusiastic sentry-extras in Doctor Who.

Along the way, we take a good look at coarse acrostics, David Banks’s career as a soap star and Beryl Reid’s lookalike. And, if any of you think that a school bully breaking one of his toys in Hayden’s book was the most heartbreaking thing you’ve ever heard about, then our swerve down the side road of the Planet of the Apes TV Series from 1974 and how it inspired a young Mark’s imagination may well leave you in tears.

(00:40:17) L!VE TV was a British television station that was operated by Mirror Group Newspapers on cable television from 12 June 1995 until 5 November 1999. It was later revived for Sky from 2003. In 2006, the new L!VE TV’s name was changed to Babeworld to reflect the channel’s gradual change of focus towards “adult material”.

(00:40:35) L!VE TV’s content included “Canary Wharf”, a soap opera, which used the station’s offices in the Docklands as a set and starred none other than the Cyberleader himself David Banks. David’s climactic scene starts 03:10 into this clip.

(00:44:10) “Planet of the Apes” is an American science fiction television series that aired on CBS in 1974. The series stars Roddy McDowall, Ron Harper, James Naughton, Mark Lenard and Booth Colman. It is based on the 1968 Planet of the Apes film and its sequels, which were inspired by the novel Planet of the Apes by Pierre Boulle. The series starred Roddy McDowall as Galen, a young chimpanzee that is sent by Zaius with Urko to ensure the safety of two humans that have survived a crash landing on Earth. McDowall previously played Cornelius and Caesar throughout the various film versions. Mark’s Galen doll, now sadly lost to a tragically heroic death by a laser defence system, can be seen here.

(01:11:48) Hylda Baker (4 February 1905 - 1 May 1986) was an English comedian, actress and music hall performer. Born and brought up in Farnworth, Lancashire, she is perhaps most well known for her role as Nellie Pledge in the ITV sitcom Nearest and Dearest (1968-73) and for her role in the 1960 film Saturday Night and Sunday Morning.

(01:12:08) British comedians Arthur Mullard and Hylda Baker released a version of the “You’re the One That I Want” in 1978 which reached Number 22 in the UK charts.

(01:12:49) “Not On Your Nellie” is a British sitcom that ran from 1974 until 1975. It starred veteran actress Hylda Baker as Nellie Pickersgill, a Bolton woman who moves to London to help run her ailing father’s Chelsea pub. Seventeen episodes of the series were produced by London Weekend Television for the ITV network.
