Big Blue Box Podcast - Episode 68

Hey Who fans and welcome to The Doctor Who Big Blue Box Podcast as we wrap up series 9. Before we review Hell Bent we’ve got news to do and the usual waffle so without further ado…

    The News

First up a great story. Martyn over at the BadWilf podcast along with the Geeksyndicate website started a campaign for a very sick Doctor Who fan called Daniel who wanted to go to the Festival last month but was too ill to attend. Using the hashtag #drwhodaniel they got the story trending and Daniel started receiving visits from cast members. Firstly it was Madame Kovarian Frances Barber which brought a smile to his face and now the Doctor himself Peter Capaldi has dropped by. Along with his visits he’s received plenty of Who stuff from various blogs/sites/podcasters which we’ll be adding to by sending a copy of the just released Whoniverse book by Lance Parkin.

Fans of the 9th Doctor 5-issue mini-series from Titan Comics will glad to hear that starting April 2016 he’ll be getting a permanent run along side the current Doctor comics. Fantastic!

If you’ve been liking the appearances of Ashildr this series you’ll be pleased to know BBC Books have just released The Legends of Ashildr in hardback. Based on her journals it’s a collection of stories from some pretty good authors including James Goss. Look out for it on Amazon, The BBC Shop and most other book stockists.

    “Hell Bent” Review

We’re expecting a big show from the series 9 finale after the amazing cliff hanger from last week’s Heaven Sent. Does this impress like we hoped or leave us drowning in a puddle of Moffat-filled disappointment?

    This week’s trivia question

Last week we asked you – There’s a price on Captain Jack’s head in how many solar systems? The answer is – Two and a half.

This week’s question is – What is the Paternoster Gang’s address? Give us your answer in the comments below or post it on Twitter or Facebook. Good luck!

Thank you for listening and subscribing to the show. Remember now that series 9 has finished (and until the Christmas Special) we’ll be going back to reviewing episodes from the classic years and from 2005, starting next week with The End Of Time Part 1. Until then – Allons-y!

Hey Who fans! A very interesting review in this week’s show as Heaven Sent throws us a Doctor-solo episode but first the news.

    The News

A potentially confirming video has been posted by Peter Jackson on his Facebook page featuring Peter Capaldi in character as the Doctor. After years of rumours that Jackson would be directing an episode of Who it looks like it may be happening which would be amazing as we’re big fans of Jackson’s work. It’s a great video so check it out if you can.

The TARDIS set tours are returning to the Doctor Who Experience. From the 3rd December you’ll be able to purchase the official BBC set tour along with your regular Experience ticket. Looking forward to visiting the actual TARDIS set used by 12th Doctor Peter Capaldi? Let us know if you end up going and give us your reviews.

The BBC have released the title and a promo image for this years Christmas Special. Titled The Husbands of River Song it will air on Christmas Day at the more traditional “tea time” slot of 5:15pm. The promo image doesn’t reveal much by way of the story but it does throw in a classic looking River, a potentially new Sonic Screwdriver (oooh!) and a strange headless robot. Another Christmas flop or an entertaining romp?

    “Heaven Sent” Review

We’re well on the way to the series end now and the Doctor is really up against the ropes. Isolated and trying to figure out where he is, who did this to him and how to escape. Does this Doctor-solo episode of dark inflection make us revel in the Moffat brilliance or is it a gruesome mess?

    This week’s trivia question

Last week we asked you – Who reportedly told the Doctor that he looked better in a cloak? The answer is – Beau Brummell.

This week’s question is – There’s a price on Captain Jack’s head in how many solar systems? Give us your answer in the comments below or post it on Twitter or Facebook. Good luck!

An emotional one this week and thank you again for your thoughts and audio clips. Next week looks very interesting and remember to let us know of any conventions you’re going to next year. Until next week – Allons-y!

Hey Who fans! Tissues at the ready for this one as we review Face the Raven but first some news and a competition!

    The News

This week sees Doctor Who celebrate 52 years of broadcasting. It only feels like yesterday we were all celebrating the 50th anniversary which is crazy but overall what a massive achievement by all involved over the years bringing us Who. Here’s to many more years.

Some casting news – Matt Lucas of Little Britain fame and Greg Davies from the Inbetweeners have been cast for this year’s Christmas Special. It’s been hit and miss with predominantly comedic actors seen in Who (Peter Kay maybe?) so we shall see how this goes. Fingers crossed!

    Competition

We have a collection of 6 new Doctor Who books up for grabs! Just head over to our Facebook page and tell us your favourite Who story. The winner will be announced next week, good luck.

    “Face the Raven” Review

It was always going to be a sad one as we say goodbye to Clara and the Doctor is left alone once more. This episode also saw the return of Ashilda as the meddling immortal but now she’s gone and done it! Does this leave us wanting more and wanting Clara back or are we up for a bit of companion change?

    This week’s trivia question

Last week we asked you – Before his death, what planet does Adric say he wants to be taken to? The answer is – Terradon.

This week’s question is – Who reportedly told the Doctor that he looked better in a cloak? Give us your answer in the comments below or post it on Twitter or Facebook. Good luck!

An emotional one this week and thank you again for your thoughts and audio clips. Next week looks very interesting and remember to let us know of any conventions you’re going to next year. Until next week – Allons-y!

Wow what a weekend! We’re now recharged and relaxed after a very busy weekend at the Doctor Who Festival which we’ll give you the low-down on plus our review of Sleep No More. Episode 65 awaits!

    The News

The series finales to series 9 Heaven Sent and Hell Bent will have extended run times according to the BBC. With the 55 minutes and 65 minutes respectively that’s a lot of Who time for TV which is great!

Big Finish have released boxset images for John Hurt’s War Doctor first adventure Only the Monstrous which you can also pre-order now for PS20. We suspect this one may be rather good so definitely a pre-order set.

    “Sleep No More” Review

It’s always risky with Doctor Who when you try new things as we all found out with the Marmite episode Love and Monsters but is it a good thing that Mark Gatiss try’s out the now often sniffed at found footage approach? We think you’ll find our review of this one interesting and if someone finds this podcast many years in the future, we’re sure you’ll understand.

    This week’s trivia question

Last week we asked you – What is the name of parallel-universe Jackie’s dog? The answer is – Rose.

This week’s question is – Before his death, what planet does Adric say he wants to be taken to? Give us your answer in the comments below or post it on Twitter or Facebook. Good luck!

It’s been a great episode and thank you for sticking with us. Some good stuff today and many bad points but hey, what’s what being a Who fan is all about, enjoying the many high points but also rolling with the low’s. Have a great week and enjoy Face the Raven tomorrow night. Until next week – Allons-y!

The excitement is ramping up as we head towards the Doctor Who Festival. Some cool news items to discuss and then we move onto our review of The Zygon Inversion.

    The News

If you’ve ever wanted to own Doctor Who digitally you can now do so through the BBC new digital download store The BBC Store. All of the newer Who stuff is on there and the majority of the classic stuff too. Don’t forget about your humble DVD collection though!

Steven Moffat has signed up to produce at least 13 more episodes after series 9, including a Christmas Special. Those curious about Moffat’s departure will have ti wait a bit longer now which is no bad thing right now, Doctor Who is on form at the moment.

You lucky Who fans in the US will be able to see this years Christmas Special in cinemas thanks to Fathom Events. On the December 28th and 29th at 7:30, you can go see Who on the big screen which will also feature a 15 minute making of feature. Let us know if you plan on going.

    “The Zygon Inversion” Review

Last week’s The Zygon Invasion was an amazing episode which we reviewed very highly but how does this week stack up? This modern classic will bring either goosebumps and thrills or boredom and upset.

    This week’s trivia question

Last week we asked you – At what age was the Doctor taken from his family to join the Acadamy? The answer is – 8.

This week’s question is – What is the name of parallel-universe Jackie’s dog? Give us your answer in the comments below or post it on Twitter or Facebook. Good luck!

What an episode! Thank you all once again for sending in your thoughts and audio clips for this week’s review episode. We look forward to seeing you at the Doctor Who Festival this weekend and hope to hear all your thoughts and memories. Until next week – Allons-y!

Good day Who fans, this is episode 63. Some waffle, some rants, some news and our review of The Zygon Invasion – good times! Let’s get stuck in.

    The News

Peter Capaldi was on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show on Wednesday morning and while chatting generally about Who, he did mention that Clara would be departing before the end of the series and that it would be very sad indeed. Tissues at the ready.

Jenna Coleman has been added to the upcoming Official Festival in London next weekend and we were even offered photo ops. Trouble is, the online system wasn’t great for this with lots of complaints to the BBC Festival twitter account. If anyone got a photo op with Jenna send us the pic.

Toys “R” Us are going to release an exclusive line of 5″ figures from Character. It’s a bit cheeky in a way as some of them are re-released in a newer box but the McGann figure looks awesome along with a couple of the Capaldi figures.

    “The Zygon Invasion” Review

We’ve been looking forward to this story since it was announced before series 9 started, who doesn’t love a good Zygon? Here we see them putting their master plan into action to take over the world but does The Doctor have enough to stop them this time?

    This week’s trivia question

Last week we asked you – Warehouse no what – where the Ood brain is kept? The answer is – 15.

This week’s question is – At what age was the Doctor taken from his family to join the Acadamy? Give us your answer in the comments below or post it on Twitter or Facebook. Good luck!

Thanks al always for your thoughts, reviews and audio clips. Keep them coming, we love it! Have a great week and enjoy The Zygon Inversion tomorrow night. Until next time – Allons-y!

Episode 62 is upon us and we have some great news to get into. We then round off with our review of the immortal girl two-parter The Girl Who Lived. Let’s do this!

    The News

David Tennant and Catherine Tate are coming back! Big Finish have signed them up for the 10th Doctor Adventures, coming May 2016. As you guys can guess, we’re hugely excited for this!

Another Who character is getting the re-work treatment, this time our favourite tin dog K9. Yes, the lovable, fearless robot dog is getting a multi-million pound movie treatment and a new look, with the movie hitting our screens in 2017. Interesting this one, we look forward to what they come up with.

    “The Girl Who Lived” Review

No more vikings but a lion-man and lots of highway robberies. Ashilda has grown tired of human life and the world but the Doctor won’t give in. Does this conclusion satisfy or leave us also tired?

    This week’s trivia question

Last week we asked you – What hobby does Wilf ingage in ‘up the hill’? The answer is – astronomy.

This week’s question is – Warehouse no what – where the Ood brain is kept? Give us your answer in the comments below or post it on Twitter or Facebook. Good luck!

It’s been interesting talking through this episode and the news has us excited. Enjoy this week’s Zygon filled episode. Until next week – Allons-y!

Welcome back aboard the Tarids this week. We waffle for a bit, rattle through the news then we’re onto our review of The Girl Who Died.

    The News

An unreleased spin-off adventure from the mid-ninteis titles Downtime is due to be released on the 16th November. Starring Nicholas Courtney as Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart and Elizabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith, they investigate a sinister school run by Professor Travers along with the Great Intelligence. There has been some legal disputes but hopefully we’ll pick this up next month.

Another Lethbridge-Stewart related story. The third book Beast of Fang Rock is out today! Continuing on from the first two books in this series you can order from the Cookie Jar publishing site now. These books are an awesome read so go and get stuck in.

    “The Girl Who Died” Review

Vikings, aliens, battles, faces explained and electric eels. After a really strong start to series 9 does this story retain the magic or do we fall in the mud, ready for the Mire to come get us?

    This week’s trivia question

Last week we asked you – What football team does Ace support? The answer is – Charlton Athletic.

    The News

    This week we discuss…

Some amazing news to kick off with, John “The War Doctor” Hurt has kicked cancer’s ass! After being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year he’s come through treatment has been given the all clear. This is good news and we’re looking forward to hearing some of the War Doctor stories from Big Finish soon.

A couple of new commentaries will be with us soon for the once lost stories The Web of Fear and The Enemy of the World. Toby Hadoke will be getting the conversation going with Deborah Watling, Milton Johns and John Levene to name a few. Produced independently of the BBC, they will be available this November from Fantom Films.

    “Before the Flood” Review

Last week we were really into Under the Lake and praised it’s suspense, the story and the casts performance. Now that we’re into the conclusion, does that trend continue or are we left feeling wet and soggy?

    This week’s trivia question

Last week we asked you – Tom Baker wanted a talking version of which vegetable as a companion? The answer is – a cabbage.

John Hurt is returning to his role as The War Doctor for 12 full audio plays from Big Finish. Also, Paul McGann will reprise his role as The Doctor for a future release, the prequel story The Time War. Loads of good stuff from Big Finish as always.

    “Under the Lake” Review

An unhappy Tardis, strange writing, ghosts and cool cliffhangers. With Capaldi now truly hitting his stride as The Doctor so we rate this one highly or does it leave us feeling wet and cold?

    “The Witch’s Familiar” Review

We scored The Magician’s Apprentice very high so how does this second part compare? More Daleks, more Clara and Missy and more of The Doctor being, well, The Doctor. It’s about to get very emotional.

    This week’s trivia question

Last episode we asked you – On what date was Victorian Clara born? The answer is – 23rd November 1866.

We’ve arrived! The start of Series 9 has been and what a show we have to discuss everything. To keep you waiting a bit more, we have the news to do so let’s land the TARDIS…

    The News

Our Australian listeners attending the Doctor Who Festival will be happy as a few more guests have been announced. Joining Peter Capaldi, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss will be 7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy, Billie Piper and Dan Starky. You lucky things you :)

Series 9 opener The Magician’s Apprentice has broken a US record with the shows largest premier of just over 2 million viewers within their target demographic of 18-49 year olds. This is great news that more people are watching and an increase from series 8, mostly younger viewers.

We now have confirmation that Jenna Coleman has left the show. What started as a 99% confirmed rumour last week turned to fact after Jenna herself told Radio 1 Breakfast show listeners the sad news. “I have left the Tardis – it’s happened, I’ve filmed my last scenes”. Now we have this confirmed it begs the question; when in series 9 will she go. We smell a new companion on the horizon.

    “The Magician’s Apprentice” Review

It’s felt like a lifetime since series 8 was with us but the new series is finally here. We dive into the story, characters and themes to this belter of a series opener. Are we suitably impressed by it’s hype and excitement or left out on the battle fields of Skaro in the cold?

    This week’s trivia question

Last episode we asked you – After The Daleks, which is the next the story to see The Doctor visiting Skaro? The answer is – The Evil of the Daleks.

This week’s question is – On what date was Victorian Clara born? Give us your answer in the comments below or post it on Twitter or Facebook. Good luck!

What a full on episode it’s been this week. Thank you so much to those who sent in audio and video reviews, please keep them coming. Thanks to everyone for hanging out on Twitter and Facebook too and look out for the usual post next week to give us your thoughts on The Witch’s Familiar. Until next time – Allons-y!

We’re almost there Who fans, series 9 is nearly here. We get excited for Capaldi’s return plus but before the mayhem, we have our regular show to do…

    The News

Apparently Jenna Coleman is to leave the show to take on the part of Queen Victoria in a new drama for ITV. After a few moments of “Jenna’s leaving” passing by already, it’s 99% confirmed that series 9 will be her last appearance. The BBC have reported on it but we still don’t have an official word yet. Be ready to say goodbye Clara fans.

We now have a list of all the series 9 episode titles. As they’re all two-parters we can’t wait to check these out, have a ganders…

    1. The Magician’s Apprentice
    2. The Witch’s Familiar
    3. Under The Lake
    4. Before The Flood
    5. The Girl Who Died
    6. The Woman Who Lived
    7. The Zygon Invasion
    8. The Zygon Inversion
    9. Sleep No More
    10. Face The Raven
    11. Heaven Sent
    12. Hell Bent

More Torchwood audio is on the way from Big Finish. Fans of the TW show will have seen the Captain Jack adventure Conspiracy announced recently which is to be followed by a second story starring Eve Myles and Kai Owen. We now have more reason to celebrate as a series 2 has been commissioned for early next year. Good times ahead.

    “Planet of the Ood” Review

Our last retro-review before we start our reviews of series 9. The Doctor and Donna are on the Ood-Sphere and things aren’t what they seem. Rabid, red-eye’d Ood along with sinister corrupt business types, this can’t be good. Do we leave this one with a twinkle of human kindness towards the Ood slaves or are we left cold outside on the barren landscape?

    This week’s trivia question

Last episode we asked you – On what planet are Voltrox found? The answer is – Necros.

This week’s question is – After The Daleks, which is the next the story to see The Doctor visiting Skaro? Give us your answer in the comments below or post it on Twitter or Facebook. Good luck!

It’s all go this week as we gear up for series 9 starting. We hope you enjoyed this week’s show and remember to give us your thoughts on the new stuff. Enjoy The Magician’s Apprentice and until next time – Allons-y!

Howdy Who fans! We have some cool news to go through then we’re back to Gallifrey for this week’s classic story review.

    The News

The UK now has a confirmed start time for the series 9 opener on the 19th September – 7:40pm. Make a note and don’t be late!

More Torchwood audio is on the way from Big Finish. This time Eve Myles and Kai Owen return to continue their adventures. Hopefully a complete Torchwood cast audio is on the way.

There have been a couple of extra guests added to the Doctor Who Festival in November. Regular writer Mark Gatiss and Big Finish maestro Nicholas Briggs will be there. There will also be photo opportunities.

The BBC, as part of the ongoing Male it Digital campaign, are launching a new game creator on the 15th September. They will provide the assets and tutorials to get you going then your creativity is your only limitation! We love that the BBC is encouraging creativity in the Who fandom and can’t wait to see what you guys come up with.

    “The Deadly Assassin” Review

After a precognitive vision we’re back on Gallifrey for a classic Tom Baker story. Companionless The Doctor has been framed by The Master so it’s all going on. Does this often liked story get us rooting for the Doctor or does it leave us wandering around the Matrix?

    This week’s trivia question

Last episode we asked you – Which story did Roger Delgado’s wife provide her voice? The answer is – Planet of the Spiders.

This week’s question is – On what planet are Voltrox found? Give us your answer in the comments below or post it on Twitter or Facebook. Good luck!

Hello you lot. Episode 54 drops a huge news story this week and then we’re onto our review of what seems like an often forgotten episode from series 1.

    The News

We’ve been thinking about this and wondering if it will happen for a while and now we have confirmation – River Song is back! The BBC have officially announced that River will be back for this year’s Christmas Special starring alongside Peter Capaldi. We’re not sure on River’s involvement past the Christmas Special and this is the only episode currently featuring the character that we’re aware of. Christmas is certainly looking to be a belter.

While Big Finish are pumping out some amazing audio plays we can’t forget some of the great BBC Audio books that have graced our ears. Coming this September are two interesting looking titles; The Two Doctors read by none other than Colin Baker and The Curse of Fenric read by Terry Molloy. These sound cool and worth checking out.

Rejoice! The long awaited troubled DVD The Underwater Menace has finally come up for pre-order on the BBC Shop site. Priced at PS13.99 it should be released on the 26th October. If you want a signed copy by Anneke Wills you can pre-order from her site for slightly more at PS18.99.

    “Boom Town” Review

Ah Boom Town, the often misplaced episode from Who’s return in 2005. Viewed as a filler story before the two-part finale that follows can it redeem itself and go out with a boom or just fizzle out like a faulty extrapolator?

    This week’s trivia question

Last episode we asked you – In Enlightenment. What is the name of Captain Striker’s ship? The answer is – Metropolitan Magazine.

This week’s question is – Which story did Roger Delgado’s wife provide her voice? Give us your answer in the comments below or post it on Twitter or Facebook. Good luck!

You guys were fantastic this week, thanks for all your comments and views. Next week we’re scoffing jelly babies as we review Tom Baker story The Deadly Assassin. Have a wonderful week and remember – Allons-y!

The Daleks are back this week for our review of Davison story Resurrection of the Daleks but first, some Doctor Who news…

    The News

Speaking of the Fifth Doctor, Peter Davison himself has written his autobiography titled The Fifth(ish) Doctor: Peter Davison which is due out April 2016 and can be pre-ordered from Amazon. Very much looking forward to this one and an insight into Davison’s Doctor.

UK fans are finally getting the new Who series 1 – 4 on blu ray as separate editions. Up to now you could only get these on blu ray by purchasing the complete series 1-7 box set at a rather high price. These will be around PS20 and released on 31st August. Good news!

Unfortunate news for Who fans in the US hoping to attend the Symphonic Spectacular on the 7th October. Shows at the Barclays Centre in New York have been cancelled without reason. Ticket holders will be issued a refund however it’s still unclear as to why the shows have been pulled? Hopefully you’ll get a rescheduled date.

There’s another chance to see previews of the series 9 opening two-parter The Magician’s Apprentice and The Witch’s Familiar. If you were lucky enough to get tickets that is. Run by BAFTA, they will host the two parter in Cardiff on 10th September followed by a Q&A with Capaldi, Coleman, Moffat and producer Brian Minchin. Once again, no spoilers please!

    “Resurrection of the Daleks” Review

We travel back to 1984 this week for our review of this classic and often overshadowed Dalek story. Dark undertones, a high death count and a companion’s departure puts this tale at the more sombre end of the Doctor’s journey. Does it still impress or leave us feeling colder than a 90 year old cryogenic imprisonment?

    This week’s trivia question

Last episode we asked you – Which publication does Sarah Jane Smith work for? The answer is – Metropolitan Magazine.

This week’s question is – In Enlightenment. What is the name of Captain Striker’s ship? Give us your answer in the comments below or post it on Twitter or Facebook. Good luck!

It’s been a blast travelling through space and time once again and thank you as always for your thoughts. Remember to jump on the usual social channels and give us your feelings on next week’s review episode – Boom Town. Have a wonderful week and rememebr – Allons-y!

    The News

Want to create your own Doctor Who fan project? The BBC have now released Mission Dalek, a content for you lot to make your own Who creation. Video, animation, whatever you want. We’re looking forward to seeing some great stuff with this one.

As we reported last week with the US getting a cinema 3D showing of series 8’s two-part finale, some other counties are now following suit. You lucky folk in Denmark and Russia are now able to catch it too, also on the 15th and 16th of September.

Could we be getting more back links to previous series’ of Who? A recent location shoot has been confirmed at Eddie’s Diner in Cardiff, conveniently the same location used in The Impossible Astronaut. Hmmmm.

Show runner Steven Moffat has been teasing some more series 9 information in the latest edition of Doctor Who Magazine but this time very cryptic, using only a few words this time; "Cards", "Hybrid", "Cobbles", "Solo", "Dead". What can it all mean?

A new book series Doctor Who: The Complete History is coming next month. This impressive series of books goes behind the scenes of popular episodes from each Doctor’s era with a new book out each fortnight. If you want to find out more about the behind-the-scenes of Who, this could be for you.

    “Hide” Review

Can Who do a good old fashioned ghost story? What turns out to be be a case of mistaken identity The Doctor and Clara must solve the case to help a stranded person in a pocket dimension. Does it put the hairs up on the back of our neck or does it leave us cold?

    This week’s trivia question

Last episode we asked you – By what names do the Doctor and his companions call themselves in the Gunfighters? The answer is – Dr Calligari, Steven Regret and Dodo Dupont.

This week’s question is – Which publication does Sarah Jane Smith work for? Give us your answer in the comments below or post it on Twitter or Facebook. Good luck!

We’re back! After a small break from saving the universe and recording podcasts the Tardis is back in the air. We’ve got plenty of news plus our review of a Troughton classic. Let’s do it…

    The News

Our friends in the US will shortly be able to see the two-part finale from series 8 – Dark Water and Death in Heaven at the cinema in 3D and Dolby Atmos. Taking place on the 15th and 16th September this will be a nice event to lead you into series 9. Do a search for Fathom Events for ticket information.

Fancy owning a piece of Doctor Who history? One of the original Dalek props from 1963 that was also used in the docu-drama An Adventure in Space and Time is going up for auction soon. Dalek “Dave” will be among lots of original movie props and memorabilia at an auction on 23rd September at London’s BFI IMAX. Bring your savings however as Dalek “Dave” is expected to go for anywhere between PS4000 – PS6000.

Big Finish seem to have once again come up with a delightful pairing, this time our classic investigators Jago and Litefoot are teaming up with Sontaran Commander Strax. Due out this November and up for pre-order now, the story takes place in Victorian London where they’re on the trail of a creature stealing brains and a haunted house. It would be a crime to not order this one!

A new trailer for series 9 dropped a few days ago and we chew the fat a little on what we can expect, what the Doctor will be wearing and will Clara be finally leaving or sticking around?

Lastly, some big names from Who have been seen together in and around Cardiff. David Tennant, Paul McGann and Russell T Davies have all been seen together and have got tongues wagging. We’re not reading too much into RTD based on his last comments about returning to Who but McGann and Tennant have the cogs turning. Hmmmm.

    “The Mind Robber” Review

We’re off to The Land of Fiction for a classic Who story and that loveable fool Patrick Troughton. Full of suspense, humour and fairy tale this 60’s story pleases a lot of fans, but does it impress enough?

    This week’s trivia question

Last episode we asked you – What was the 100th story to be broadcast? The answer was The Stones of Blood.

This week’s question is – By what names do the Doctor and his companions call themselves in the Gunfighters? Give us your answer in the comments below or post it on Twitter or Facebook. Good luck!

It’s been awesome being back and recording once more, the natural order of things is now restored. Join us next week for more news and our review of Matt Smith’s Hide. Have a great week and until then – Allons-y!

Yes it’s the big 50 for us and what we have a crackin’ show lined up. A couple of rants, some great news items and our review episode guaranteed to split opinion – Love and Monsters. Let’s do it Who fans!

    A big thank you

We’ve reached episode 50! Adam and I would like to say a HUGE thank you for your continued support and listening over the last year and a bit, it’s been an absolute joy to record this show and we’re always grateful for your thoughts. We always love reading out your views on our review episode each week and you guys never disappoint. Here’s to another 50 episodes!

    The News

The 6th Doctor Colin Baker’s new project has just been fully funded! Publicly funded movie Last Man on Earth is currently in rehearsal in Manchester with things moving nicely into production, thanks to your pledges. We’ll be on the look out for this upon release. You can find out more here.

Tucked away in the BBC Annual Review is a tiny nugget of important information – Doctor Who’s series 10 has now been confirmed. Assuming that at this stage in the game and DW’s global success episode 10 was a sure thing, the BEEB didn’t shout about it. Still at least we know it’ll be on our screens for another year at least.

Capaldi hints at a Caecilius return? We heard a while ago that in series 9 they would explain the reason for the Doctor being seen previously in The Fires of Pompeii. Well know Capaldi has confirmed this along with Moffat saying that it will be subtly referenced.

Some lucky folks will be seeing the series 9 opener The Magician’s Apprentice early as a special advanced screening is taking place on August 27th at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. No spoilers please!

    “Love and Monsters” Review

Often viewed as one of the weakest episode’s in modern Who we’re getting stuck into this “Doctor-Lite” story to get to the bottom of the negative views plus also giving our own views and the oh-so important score. It’s gonna be a rough ride so batten down the hatches!

    This week’s trivia question

Last episode we asked you – When the Doctor first met Amy where did he say the swimming pool was? The answer is the Library.

This week’s question is – What was the 100th story to be broadcast? Give us your answer in the comments below or post it on Twitter or Facebook. Good luck!

  • Big Blue Box Podcast - Episode 49

    10 July 2015 (6:30am GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 days, 1 hours, 6 minutes and 57 seconds

    Direct Podcast Download

Hey Who fans, it’s episode 49! Some really cool news items to go through then it’s pirates and treasure for this week’s review.

    The News

There’s been some initial buzz for Who fans since the reveal that Doctor Who is to feature in the upcoming LEGO Dimensions game. That news was trumped when this week a new video surfaced showing lots of Who gameplay, consisting of 12th Doctor malarky, Tardis interior (which looks awesome) plus a regeneration sequence showing all of the Doctor’s, right back to Hartnell, seemingly as playable characters. We can’t wait for this one.

We could be in for an episode with some cool Douglas Adams references in Series 9. Some pics have popped up showing some of the latest sets and one features three Tardis Blue coloured bottles with the words “Part 10″ but also the words “Answer to the question of life, the universe and everything in the galaxy.”, with some Gallifreyan behind them. There’s also references to 42, which we all know as the answer to the question of life, the universe and everything. These could be some cool setup’s for Series 9 or they could be just small hat tips to Douglas.

The official DW Instagram account has been putting up some very cryptic images of late. Blurry and out of focus shots with alien makeup being applied, haunted mansions, strange alien symbols and plenty of other stuff. They’re very good at teasing us right now.

“The Curse of the Black Spot” Review

We were looking forward to this one as hey, who doesn’t like pirates but do we get plenty of grrrr and sea shanty with this Matt Smith episode or is it a bit wet and damp?

    This week’s trivia question

Last episode we asked you – Which floor on Satellite 5 was Medical Nonemergency? The answer is 16.

This week’s question is – When the Doctor first met Amy where did he say the swimming pool was? Give us your answer in the comments below or post it on Twitter or Facebook. Good luck!

Thanks me harty’s for sticking with us through episode 49 and thank you as always for your great comments, please keep them coming. Enjoy all the Who news still to come out of Comic Con and until next week – Allons-y!

Howdy listeners. We’re baking inside the Tardis this week as the heatwave continues! News out the way then onto our review of Timelash.

    The News

Big Finish really are going for it this year. We’ve already had some good announcements such as the extended Doctor Who licence until 2020 and UNIT stories coming later this year but they’ve gone one further and have announced River Song is coming! Yes sweetie, River will feature in her own story, The Diary of River Song as well as joining up with 8th Doctor Paul McGann which is REALLY exciting! The last quarter of 2015 is going to be amazing if you’re into Big Finish.

Sad news if you’re still waiting to pick up The Underwater Menace on DVD. While it’s been coming for a long while now and even after receiving updates of potential release dates, the BBC have abandoned plans to release it as the company providing the animation has hit financial problems. We may see this released on another media int he future but as for a DVD release it looks unlikely for now. Bummer.

The Official Doctor Who Festival is heading down under. It only feels like yesterday that the BBC announced the Festival in London this November and now, pretty much straight after, it’s heading to Sydney Australia. 21st to the 22nd November in Moore Park, Sydney, will see Peter Capaldi and Steven Moffat take up special guest duties.

    “Timelash” Review

We’re back with The 6th Doctor for Timelash. It can be a tough old time seeing the best in some of Colin Baker’s stories so for this one, do we jump for joy or feel like it’s one never ending Kontron corridor?

    This week’s trivia question

Last episode we asked you – The Sycorax had control of people with which blood type? The answer is A+.

This week’s question is – Which floor on Satellite 5 was Medical Nonemergency? Give us your answer in the comments below or post it on Twitter or Facebook. Good luck!

Thank you for flying the Tardis with us once again and it’s been great going through some cool news stories plus that tricky old time of Colin Baker’s Timelash. Enjoy the sun and until next week – Allons-y!

Greetings Who fans, good to have your ears for episode 47. Let’s go straight in with talk of the official festival, news round up then our review of Paul McGann’s Doctor Who: The Movie.

    The News

If you’re enjoying the current run of Who comics from Titan then you’ll be pleased to hear that Year Two has been successfully commissioned and kicks off this September with stories for the Tenth and Eleventh Doctor’s. Doctor Who: The Eleventh Doctor: Year Two #1 lands Sep 9th and Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor: Year Two #1 is released Sep 16th. No word as yet on stories for the 9th or 12th Doctor’s but watch this space.

Dan Starky has been expanding his Who character repertoire lately. He was snapped at what looks like The Doctor Who Experience in Cardiff in a custom made mini-Cyberman outfit. What can this mean? Is this something we’ll see in Series 9 this September or is it a bit of fun? Either way, Starky looks less than thrilled in the pics and we much prefer him as Commander Strax.

Capaldi and Coleman are going to Germany to play special guests at a Who event in Berlin. Friday 17th July sees a special fan event in the heart of Berlin and we think this is a great idea. As Who grows in popularity across Europe it’s only fitting that the stars pop over and say hi. If any of our German listeners attend please send us some pics!

    “The Movie” Review

Ah, The Movie, or The TV Movie, or Doctor Who The Movie. Whatever your naming convention it’s a very different beast this one and a story we’ve been looking forward to reviewing for ages. You’ll know the drill with this one but does it leave us feeling regenerated and alive or cold and morgue-like?

    This week’s trivia question

Last episode we asked you – Where is “Sister-of-mine”? The answer is of course, in every mirror.

This week’s question is – The Sycorax had control of people with which blood type? Give us your answer in the comments below or post it on Twitter or Facebook. Good luck!

It’s been great fun this week and thank you so much for all your comments on The Movie, you guys obviously have strong feelings on it and it was great reading through them all. Be prepared for next week’s Timelash! Have an fantastic week and until next time – Allons-y!

Howdy-do Who fans, it’s episode 46! Before we get onto our review of McCoy’s first outing as The Doctor let’s land the Tardis and crack on with the news.

    The News

We could have an “off the record” confirmed start time for series 9 – September. We suspected it may be August but producer Nikki Wilson let it slip on Twitter “We’ll be back in September”. So slightly later than we’d like as we’re desperate to get stuck into the new series but hey, it’s not much later.

Steven Moffat has bagged himself an OBE. For his services to drama the Moff has picked up one of the Queen’s honours and is well deserved in our opinion.

Colin Baker is to star in a new independent sci-fi short called Last Man on Earth. The official synopsis: “Last Man on Earth is a short pre-apocalypse sci-fi thriller about a virologist who is recruited to a bio research conglomerate to help work on a cure for cancer. It’s a film about decisions and their consequences. A story about the future told in the present day.” The project has already bagged around PS1600 in funding but it needs more to get to completion. If you want to see The 6th Doctor get back into sci-fi then jump over to the Indiegogo page and donate.

Lastly, our thoughts are with The War Doctor Sir John Hurt after he recently announced he’d been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. We wish him the best and a speedy recovery.

    “Time and the Rani” Review

This week we delve into Sylvester McCoy’s first story as The Doctor as he goes head-to-head with renegade Time Lady – The Rani. It’s full of deception, strange alliances, quirky one-liners, reptilian type people, large bat-type creatures and the playing of spoons. Is it one for the recommended list or does it need to be buried in a quarry somewhere? It’s our review of Time and the Rani.

    This week’s trivia question

Last episode we asked you – How many people have to be online in order for the Osterhagen key to be allowed to be used? The answer is – 3.

This week’s question is – Where is “Sister-of-mine”? Give us your answer in the comments below or post it on Twitter or Facebook. Good luck!

Welcome back into the Tardis for episode 45 and it’s all getting a bit catty. Not as in squably but, you know, catty. As in fully grown human sized cats. Our review of New Earth awaits but first, the news...

    The News

Fans of series geek Osgood will be pleased to know that actress Ingrid Oliver is to join the cast and star alongside Jemma Redgrave for upcoming Big Finish spin off UNIT: Extinction. We love Osgood here on the podcast and can’t wait to get this one delivered.

The BBC are getting fond of festivals this year as the Radio Times Festival heads to Greater London in September. Part of the lineup will be a celebration of Doctor Who (among other great BBC shows) with panels and presentations featuring Steven Moffat, Peter Capaldi and Russell T Davies. Tickets go on sale to the public on the 23rd June.

The mysterious writer for episode 10 that the BEEB blurred out has now been revealed as Sarah Dollard. Those of you who aren’t familiar with Dollards work will definitely know some of the programs she’s written for which include Merlin, Primeval, Being Human and many more.

Strangely, a supporting cast member from series 8 will be joining us for episode 10 of the new series – Rigsy. You will remember him from the awesome episode Flatline in featuring the Boneless. Interesting to see where his character fits in for the new run.

    “New Earth” Review

The Doctor and Rose come bounding onto our screens for the first episode of series 2. Plenty of classic Tennant in this one with Rose playing a dual role for most of the story. Human sized cats, nasty diseases and The Face of Bo. It’s all going on but does The Doctor nurse our viewing pleasure or does it leave us feeling like we’ve got the flu?

    This week’s trivia question

Last episode we asked you – What were the very first words written in history? The answer is – Hello Sweetie, left by River Song for The Doctor.

Bonjour Who fans. It’s been a fairly slow week for news but fear not, we’re reviewing potentially one of the best classic Who stories this week. Let’s go!

    The News

Doctor Who is to appear in the new LEGO Dimensions game. We’re super excited about this as it feels like Doctor Who should have been a part of LEGO for years now. The game due to launch in September this year and features physical LEGO toys which are then placed onto a pad which “magically” places them into the game.

The BEEB has gone all mysterious on us. They posted a short news snippet regarding the read through for episode 10 of the new series but have blurred out the title and the writers name? The post also includes this cryptic line “We'll have more big news for you soon, both about the ongoing production of the new series and the broader world of Doctor Who. As the Doctor himself might say, it's a roller coaster, isn't it?”. Hmmmm.

Big news to finish off with! As though the convention God’s were listening to our rant about how the stars of Doctor Who don’t attend many UK conventions we’re now going to get an entire weekend convention this November. Yes, the Doctor Who Festival starts Friday 13th November until Sunday 15th and will feature Peter Capaldi and Steven Moffat among others. There will also be behind the scenes production talks, cosplay showcase, meet the writers, a drama school and much more. Head over to The Doctor Who Festival site for more information and tickets go on sale Friday 5th June at 10am. We’ll see you there!

    “City of Death” Review

Classic Who goes international for City of Death with the romantic city of Paris as a backdrop to this alien story. It has it all – crashed spaceships, funny one liners, reversed polarity and sinister aliens. However, does it leave us with a sweet taste of wine and grapes or is it like a bowl of cooked frogs?

    This week’s trivia question

Last episode we asked you – Who was the only Doctor since its first appearance to never use the Sonic Screwdriver? The answer is Colin Baker (although he did use a Sonic Lance).

This week’s question is – What were the very first words written in history? Give us your answer in the comments below or post it on Twitter or Facebook. Good luck!

Great to have you with us again this and thank you for your always interesting and amusing thoughts on our review episode. Have an awesome week and until next time – Allons-y!

    The News

A bitter sweet bit of news for UK fans, the principle cast of DW (Capaldi, Coleman, Gomez and Moffat) are going to Comic Con San Diego. This is awesome news as the show’s international reach and prominence is increased but please, folks of the BBC, we have a couple of great conventions too you know.

Good news for DW fans in India as we hear that modern Who has been broadcast since 15th May on FX. It’s gained a lot of traction internationally over the last 10 years and to now see it broadcast in India is another step forward.

    “The Lodger” Review

It’s back to modern Who this week as we look at a series 5 Matt Smith and James Corden team up in this creepy tale of sinister aliens, a Doctor adapting to human life and a love story which comes good. Does it leave us cheering like fans at a Sunday league football game or bored up on the second floor?

    This week’s trivia question

Last episode we asked you – What is the name of the Impossible Planet? The answer is Krop Tor.

This week’s question is – Who was the only Doctor since its first appearance to never use the Sonic Screwdriver?? Send us your answer on Twitter or Facebook. Good luck!

Thank you so much for getting in touch on Facebook and Twitter with your thoughts on our review episodes. You guys are flooding us with them so we can’t read them all fully but we’ll try to include as many as time permits. Next week we’re reviewing City of Death. Until next time – Allons-y!

Apart from things looking a little different around here with a snazzy new design the podcast is rockin’ and rollin’ as usual. We’ve got some interesting news to get through and then onto our review of grey-ish blue aliens, travelling entertainers and Drashigs.

    The News

Wether you agree or disagree with his direction over the last few years, it seems Moffat is here to stay for at least series 10. It seems he’s not done with Who just yet and there’s more stories he wants to explore which leads us onto...

Steven Moffat is at odds with the 12th Doctor himself Peter Capaldi regarding the Doctor’s feelings towards Clara. Moffat believes the Doctor has always fancied Clara while Capaldi disagrees and is obviously not comfortable with that theory. We’ll see how that one plays out in series 9.

One of those “weird” ones for you, comic book fans will be upset to learn that a Doctor Who/Spider-Man crossover has been cancelled. Yes, Marvel’s web slinger was due to cross-over with the Doctor, presumably within comics, but after five years of development it’s been canned.

Talking of comics, Titan have a summer comic event lined up consisting of a one-off five issue run but what’s cool is issue one will feature John Hurt’s War Doctor. Will definitely have that one on pre-order.

Lastly, those of you subscribing to the global BBC iPlayer outside of the UK, the service is being discontinued as of June 26th. Apparently the BBC are launching a new digital media subscription service but we’re not sure on timings, we’ll let you all know when we do.

    “Carnival of Monsters” Review

Lot’s going on in this week’s review episode as we talk through this Pertwee classic. The Doctor and Jo find themselves trapped within a travelling entertainer’s Miniscope along with other “aliens”. Do we get excited for this one or scream like Drashigs?

    This week’s trivia question

Last episode we asked you – In the episode Midnight, what was the waterfall made of? The answer is Sapphires.

This week’s question is – What is the name of the Impossible Planet? Send us your answer on Twitter or Facebook. Good luck!

Thank you for getting on touch with your thoughts on this week’s review episode. Next week we’re going back to the brilliant Matt Smith era with The Lodger. Have a great weekend and enjoy if you’re going to the Symphonic Spectacular in London. Until next time – Allons-y!

    The News

Osgood and the Zygons are back for series 9! Yes, that jaw-dropping moment when Osgood was killed, is now being explained in the upcoming series. As we asked ourselves at the time, was it Osgood or the "Zygon-Osgood" who bit the dust? We'll soon find out.

A special anniversary event is being held in New York to celebrate 10 years of Who. Organised by BAFTA Cymru, Cardiff Business Council, BBC America and BAFTA New York, it's a night to celebrate the enormous talent and work of the teams in Wales and to mix with the US guys. It sounds like a great event but we do have a few thoughts on this one.

Jenna Coleman has put laid to rest a few rumours that her character has little to no involvement in series 9. With many set photos now released it's an easy one to debunk and while it was purely speculation Jenna has gone on record to confirm her part in the next series.

Stand up comic Lee Mack has been onto the peeps at the BBC, desperate to land a guest role in Doctor Who. I guess hoping to follow in the footsteps of Frank Skinner, Mack wants to put a tick in the box as a Who fan.

    "Father's Day" Review

This episode was released 10 years ago yesterday and although we hadn't noticed, it's a very well timed review. An early episode of the Eccleston run it's an emotional and well written story but does it leave us teary eyed and happy or bored and wanting more? Listen on to find out.

    This week's trivia question

In the episode Midnight, what is the waterfall made of? Tweet or Facebook us your answer and we'll read out the correct ones next week.

Thanks for stopping by and listening to us again this week. Thank you for your thoughts on Father's Day. The News

As always we hate kicking the news off with sad times but we do also like to celebrate the lives of people who have appeared in Doctor Who. Nigel Terry, who played the firm and naive General Cobb in the 10th Doctor story The Doctor's Daughter has sadly passed away aged 69. After a long career in both movies and television it's his performance in 2008 along side David Tennant that will stick with Who fans.

Big Finish have now secured the rights to Torchwood and we'll be getting six brand new audio plays starting this September. After years of fans asking for a new Torchwood TV show this is the best we're going to get until then but in some ways this is potentially better as Big Finish have a very high success rate within the Who universe and its many spectacular stories. John Barrowman will return along with new characters to continue Captain Jack's adventures.

It seems we may not have seen the last of River Song. Alex Kingston has been speaking at Mega-Con in the US she says "All I can say is... spoilers!". She then goes onto say that she hasn't been told her character is done so, take from that what you will.

    Competition - winner announced

Thank you all for tweeting in for our latest competition. The winner of Cameron K McEwan's new book The Unofficial Doctor Who Big Book of Lists is - Thomas Evans. Congratulations and enjoy. Thank you to Race Point Publishing for giving us a copy of the book for the competition. For those of you who didn't win, we highly recommend the book which can be picked up in all good bookshops or at Amazon.

    "Black Orchid" Review

We love Classic Who week and we pick out a fairly quiet story that hardly ever gets talked about or reviewed. It's a short two-parter featuring 5th Doctor Peter Davison with the trio of Tegan, Nyssa and Adric who get pulled into a lively social gathering but there's a sinister figure responsible for murder. Is this short and sweet or does it shrivel and die like un-watered flowers?

It's been a great week inside the Tardis. Thank you for your thoughts on Black Orchid and thank you for pushing us over 500 Likes on Facebook, that's awesome! Next week we're reviewing Eccleston's Father's Day. Until next week - Allons-y!

If your week felt empty fear not! We're back to make your Friday more bearable and today, as well as running through the news and giving you our review of Planet of the Dead, we have a cool giveaway too. Let's go!

    [powerpress]

    The News

First up in the news - Moffat answers a question in the latest Doctor Who Magazine regarding Peter Capaldi's appearance in The Fires of Pompeii. Interestingly they are going to look at this subject in an upcoming story for episode 9. Are some things better left to mystery? We think so.

Those clever peeps at Real SFX and Milk VFX have scooped a BAFTA for their work on Who. Nabbing the award for Best Visual, Special and Graphic Effects in 2015, what a proud moment for those guys.

A mysterious new monster has been snapped on-set during the filming for series 9 in a medieval village. Big, hulking and menacing, we're intrigued as to what new monster this is.

More on series 9 and David Schofield of Merlin and Pirates of the Caribbean fame has been cast to star in episodes five and six. Great news to consistently have great actors on Who.

Peter Davison has been speaking to Digital Spy about a possible Five(ish) Doctor's sequel. The good news is that he seems up for it, there are a few issues though. Firstly there's a Doctor missing (ahem Tom) and secondly there's the matter of payment for the cast. The first outing (which we're assuming was always viewed as a one off for the 50th anniversary) was fine to rope people in but to pull them in again for nowt? He goes on to say it also needs to be a good idea and story, better than the first.

    Competition

To win Cameron K McKewan's awesome new book Unofficial Doctor Who: The Big Book of Lists simply follow us on Twitter and tweet us something like "I want this cool book now!" and use the hashtag #bigblueboxcomp. Good luck.

    "Planet of the Dead" Review

Another Who story that separates the fans this week. As the first in a run of four specials leading up to Tennat's departure, does it kick things off with a bang or do we want to bury our heads in the sand?

Thank you for joining us for episode 39, we hope we've put things back to normality and your Friday isn't empty and soul-less. Remember to get tweeting to be in with a chance to win the book and next week we're reviewing Carnival of Monsters. Until next time - Allons-y!

Welcome back inside the Tardis for episode 38. Some interesting news items to go through before we jump into our first Q&A then onto our review of a Hartnell classic - The Time Meddler.

    [powerpress]

    The News

5th Doctor Peter Davison celebrated his 63rd birthday on Monday 13th April. He's looking great for his age and doesn't look in his sixties at all. Happy Birthday Sir!

Disney XD in the US is to air the 10th Doctor's series 2 starting in May.

The Mirror newspaper dropped a potential huge spoiler for the two-part opener for series 9. If you don't want to hear this rumoured spoiler at the moment, mute your audio at 11:20 for about 3 minutes.

    Our first Q&A

Everyone loves a Q&A, they're all the rage these days. Seeing as we get asked a lot of questions while at conventions or on social media we thought it would be good to open it up for you to send in your questions for us to answer on the show. Thank you for sending in your audio clips, YouTube clips and questions on Facebook. Enjoy.

    "The Time Meddler" Review

We go way back to series 1 of the classic years and soak up the gorgeous black and white grainy adventure with the 1st Doctor, Vicki and Stuart. Does the meddling Monk, Saxons and Vikings draw us into this timey wimey story or do we run back to the beach looking for the Tardis?

Thank you for larking about in the Tardis. It's been fun answering your questions and also revisiting the Hartnell era. Next week we're reviewing Tennant's Planet of the Dead so look out for the usual posts on Facebook and Twitter to send us your thoughts. Until next time - Allons-y!

A great show this week with some interesting news headlines then we're onto our review of Amy's Choice. Actually, is that birds I can hear? Singing... yes... birds... ZzZzZzZ

    [powerpress]

    The News

Mr Moffat himself has gone on record to say that Who will be with us on our screens for at least another five years into 2020. That's awesome news seeing as there's been rumours of late about a possible hiatus.

BBC America is partnering with BitTorrent to legally, yes legally, offer a new boxset containing 10 items from modern Who. For $12 which works out to be roughly PS8 you're getting a few great episode such as The Empty Child, The Doctor Dances, Blink and The Day of the Doctor plus more. It's a great price to have them handy in digital format plus you also get a few Peter Capaldi intro's too.

More news from Moffat now with his views on a Doctor Who movie. Although not completely closed to the idea he feels it wouldn't work as we have such a successful TV show currently running. He likens it to James Bond, you wouldn't have a 007 movie on with a Bond TV show running. We agree with his thoughts and while a movie will probably happen one day, it's not the right time now.

    "Amy's Choice" Review

Yes we're hand flapping our way back to the Matt Smith era with this creepy story or dream states and choices. Does Amy's Choice fill us with confidence to give an appropriate score or, like Rory's ponytail, does it leave us feeling sleepy?

Thank you for flying the Tardis with us. Remember to submit your Q&A question to either garry[at]bigblueboxpodcast.co.uk or adam[at]bigblueboxpodcast.co.uk. If you send us a YouTube clip or audio file we'll play it on the show but if you don't have a mic or camera, simply Like us on Facebook and check the post out there to submit a written question. The News

Walking Tours now back at the Doctor Who Experience. Those of you that haven't had the chance as yet or had your tour cancelled late last year will be pleased to know that the popular Walking Tours are now back, starting this Easter weekend. Lasting around 75 minutes and taking you to no fewer than 40 filming locations around the Cardiff Bay area, this is sure to please those of you keen to see the actual locations used from Series 1 onwards. The tours will continue from 27th April up until the end of June, go book yours now!

Good news for Big Finish fans a they've now renewed their licence for Doctor Who with the BBC until 2020. Producing Doctor Who original cast audio dramas since 1999, Big Finish have been responsible for some of the best Who stories ever and thanks to them we've had the pleasure of hearing our classic Doctor's shine in a way not possible from their on-screen days. They've already planned Doctor Who adventures up to 2017 so lots of good stuff on the way.

Those of you who watch Game of Thrones will be pleased to here Maisie Williams aka Ayra Stark is to guest star in Series 9. Steven Moffat goes on to say "We're thrilled to have Maisie Williams joining us on Doctor Who. It's not possible to say too much about who or what she's playing, but she is going to challenge the Doctor in very unexpected ways. This time he might just be out of his depth, and we know Maisie is going to give him exactly the right sort of hell". Series 9 is shaping up to be great by the sounds of it, we can't wait for it to arrive.

    Our first Q&A

We always get lots of questions wether on Facebook, Twitter or in person at conventions so we thought it was time to do a proper Q&A for you all. If you'd like to send us a question you can do so either by YouTube or sending us an audio file. If you're going to do a YouTube vid just pop the link over to us on Facebook or Twitter (they'll be a Facebook post pinned to the top of our page where you can comment with your link). If you want to record an audio file, save it as an mp3 and email it to: hello@bigblueboxpodcast.co.uk. We'll collate them all and answer them all on Friday 17th's show. Get recording your questions now!

"The Mark of the Rani" Review

Seeing as we haven't done a Colin Baker story in a long while we thought it would be good to visit a classic story of his. While not always viewed as one of the most popular era's of classic Who, there's a lot to like about old Sixie but does this episode provide enough? Do we share in his excitement or, like Perri, just want to go back to the Tardis and have a cuppa?

Thank you for jumping into episode 36 and geeking out once more. Next week we review Amy's Choice so be sure to send us your thoughts on that one. Also remember to get your questions in for our Q&A. Until next time - Allons-y!

    "Rose" Review

It wouldn't be a fitting 10th anniversary show without revisiting the episode that brought long-time fans back into new yet familiar adventures whilst also starting the cycle all over again for a new generation. We talk trough the pressure on Russell T Davies, Julie Gardner, Chris Eccleston and Billie Piper. We laugh at Clive, the burping bin and Jackie Tyler's seduction tactics. Overall, we celebrate this important episode that paved the way for new Who since.

Thank you for joining us for episode 35 and also for sticking with us in our first year. We would like to thank ALL OF OUR LISTENERS who have followed us, commented on our posts and tweets, liked us, agreed with us, disagreed with us and generally interacted in any way shape or form. The News

Doctor Who has got two nominations at this year's Saturn Awards. The show itself is up for Best Youth-Oriented Television Show and Jenna Coleman is up for Best Supporting Actress in a Television Series. They are up against some stiff competition with other shows such as Game of Thrones, Supernatural and The Walking Dead but we have faith in fans of Who to make the right choice. The awards will be announced on June 25th.

A special tribute event will take place at the BFI Southbank on April 1st to appreciate the great work Verity Lambert did. The event, Verity Lambert: An Appreciation, will start at 6:10pm and boasts a couple of special gusts including Joanna Lumley and Lynda La Plante. The panel event, hosted by author of new Lambert biography Richard Marson, should be good and we'll hopefully see you there.

Two French indie video game artists, Alexis Foletto and Caroline Vic, are soon to put out a Doctor Who game entitled Doctor Who: A Brilliant Game based on the story The Day of the Doctor. It's got a wonderful old school 8-bit look and feel to it and this could be a little gem in the world of Doctor Who games, something that's been lacking of late. You can keep up to date with the game on their Facebook page.

    "Robot" Review

We venture back to Tom Baker's very first episode as the Doctor in this often loved classic story. Action, humour and full of that classic Who charm, did it leave us falling in love with it all over again or like the troubled K1, leave us cold?

    10th Anniversary Competition

After a few weeks of teasing you all we can now reveal the details of our competition to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Doctor Who's return in 2005. It also falls in line with our first anniversary too!

We have the following prizes up for grabs and one lucky winner will receive them all... 1. 11th Doctor New Touch Control Sonic Screwdriver 2. Tardis style mug 3. City of Death DVD starring Tom Baker 4. Big Blue Box Podcast T Shirt and Mug 5. New Lethbridge-Stewart novel The Forgotten Son 6. 4th Doctor Replica Scarf from Lovarzi 7. Dark Eyes 4 box set from Big Finish

As you can see, a great swag bag of Who goodies for the winner. In order to win ALL THE PRIZES however, all you have to do is jump onto Twitter, Facebook or both and tweet/post a small message about the competition and use the hashtag #bigblueboxcomp. Our aim is to reach a goal of 700 Twitter followers and/or 1000 Facebook likes (we don't expect to hit both targets, although that would be nice, so once the target has been reached for either one, all the prizes get thrown into the bag). The competition will start with prizes 1 through to 5 with the last two added on once we reach certain milestones which are...

    1. 600 Twitter followers - we add on the 4th Doctor Replica scarf
    2. 700 Twitter followers - we add on Dark Eyes 4, completing the package

    Similar approach for Facebook...

    1. 800 Facebook likes - we add on the 4th Doctor Replica scarf
    2. 1000 Facebook likes - we add on Dark Eyes 4, completing the package

So as you can see, it's up to you guys to jump on both Twitter and Facebook and get the message out. Encourage as many follows/likes and retweets as you can. Once we get to that magic target, someone will grab the lot. A winner will be chosen completely at random and you can post as many tweets or status' as you like. We'll announce the winner on the Friday 27th March show.

It's been a cool show this week and talking through Robot was great fun. Remember to dive in and get Tweeting and Facebook posting to be in for a chance to win those awesome Who goodies. Have an awesome week and until next time - Allons-y!!!

Blue Box Podcast - Episode 31

Welcome aboard the Big Blue Box for episode 31. Some good and not-so-good news to kick off with but then we're straight into our review of The Doctor's Wife.

    [powerpress]

    The News

Unfortunately production designer Barry Newbury has passed away aged 88. Barry was involved with the show since An Unearthly Show all the way through to 1984's The Awakening. It's sad that another Who veteran has left us but we celebrate his legacy and the awesome work he did on the show.

Samuel Anderson aka Danny Pink has picked up the award for Best Male Performance in TV given at the 2015 Screen Nation Film and Television Awards. He received the award for his work on Doctor Who and Trollied. Nice work Mr Anderson.

Bad news for fans eagerly awaiting the release of The Underwater Menace. Originally due for release in 2014 but pushed back to sometime this year, we've now learnt that it's removed from this year's schedule all together. As we haven't had a classic release in just over a year now (since The Web of Fear) it's disheartening to learn that we could go another year with no release. There is a fan petition here if you want to get your name down and show some support for it's release.

    "The Doctor's Wife" Review

Modern Who time and after our commentary episode of The Eleventh Hour we stick with Matt Smith and look at an episode often referred to as overrated and weak. Did we review this one with great gusto or get squashed like an Ood standing in the wrong spot?

Thank you all as usual for getting in touch with your thoughts. Next week is Tom Baker's Robot so remember to give us your opinions. Have an awesome week and until then - Allons-y!!!

Commentary #1 - The Eleventh Hour

It's our first ever commentary show and what better way to kick things off than with a modern classic - The Eleventh Hour.

    [powerpress]

We debated for a while on what episode to do for our first commentary and this wasn't actually our first choice (that one's coming very soon). We wanted to do a story from newer Who (you'd all probably get quite bored listening to us comment on a 6-part classic story) and this episode with it's hour long run time seemed perfect. What better episode to pick from the Matt Smith era than his first?

So get your blu ray, dvd or digital file ready, get a cup of tea or coffee and enjoy this great episode with our usual banter to go with it.

Thanks for stopping by for this commentary show. Let us know if you enjoyed this and we'll continue to do them. Also let us know your thoughts on The Eleventh Hour.

    Until next time - Allons-y!!!

It's a packed Tardis this week as Adam and I go through the news and this week's review but then we also stop by to pick up the author Andy Frankham-Allen to talk about is new book Lethbridge-Stewart. Let's do it!

    [powerpress]

    The News

The BBC have now officially announced that Michelle Gomez will return as Missy in the opening two-parter for series 9 later this year. We didn't expect to see Missy back so soon but the opening couple of episodes do sound very good. Let's see what happens this time around for The Mistress.

Before series 8 and Capaldi bounded onto our screens a visual fx artist Billy Hanshaw put out his own interpretation of the opening theme which was then spotted by the beeb and subsequently used for the show as we see it now. This week, another visual fx enthusiast going only by the name John Smith on YouTube, has put out his version of the Tardis de-materialising and it looks fantastic. The quality is superb and it looks like it could be dropped into the show tomorrow. We love it when fans directly contribute to the show so hopefully this might have a similar uptake.

Want to study the history of Doctor Who? Now you can if you're anywhere near Stockport, Manchester. Aquinas College is running an 11 week evening class run by historian Michael Herbert starting April 14th. If you want to study the early beginnings of the show and learn about the classic years then this could be for you.

    Interview with Andy Frankham-Allen

We may remember a few weeks ago we announced a new series of novels to be released at the end of February all about the legend that is Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart played by Nicholas Courtney. We are very pleased to have the author and editor of the series Andy Frankham-Allen inside the Tardis to give us some insight into writing for this classic character and what we can expect from the series. Jump over to Amazon and order the book there and if you're in London on the 28th February be sure to drop into The Who Shop and get a signed copy.

    "The Visitation" Review

Another classic years review this week and it's the turn of 5th Doctor Mr Davison. An often well received story this tale brings us back to a village just outside London and the start of the plague. Large alien fugitives, a camp android and a rather pantomime-eqsue ally give us plenty to be happy about or do we crumble under the sonic booster?

A huge thank you to Andy for jumping on-board this week. Remember to order the book, it's a wonderful read. Thank you all for getting in touch with your thoughts and get ready for next week when we review The Doctor's Wife. You're also treated to our first commentary next week where we waffle on while watching The Eleventh Hour.

    Until next time - Allons-y!!!

Welcome aboard the Tardis for episode 29. Plenty of good Doctor Who news to get through and then we're onto our review of The Unquiet Dead.

    [powerpress]

    The News

We have a new comic hitting the shelves on the 26th Feb 2015 entitled, quite un-inspiringly, Doctor Who Comic. It will feature short adventures from the 10th, 11th and 12th Doctors along with competitions and other stuff. Across 84 pages it should be a good read and at PS3.99 it's a reasonable price. Look out for it in supermarkets, W H Smith and select newsagents.

The Radio Times has ranked all the opening titles and have come up with an interesting list. What do you think to this? We had a few doubts and would definitely change the order.

Convention goers in the South of the UK might be interested in a Who con that's gone underneath the radar - The Bedford Who Charity Con. Featuring some great guest appearances from the classic years it sounds like a good day. As a bonus, all the profits will go to a local food bank so you'll be doing your bit for charity too.

Big Finish are on a roll recently. After the awesome announcement last week of the regeneration story for the 6th Doctor, we're now going to be treated to a UNIT spin off series starring current show UNIT director Kate (Jemma Redgrave) amongst others. Check out the cover art and be prepared to pre-order another story. It's released in November this year.

    "The Unquiet Dead" Review

Review time and this week we pull out a story from series 1. It's another one of those episodes where it's overlooked and not one you'd pull out if you wanted to watch an Eccleston episode. It's creepy and dark and features some great little links to larger aspects of Who lore but does it fire us up to cook on gas or does it fizzle out?

Thank you again for your views on our review episode this week, it's great reading out your opinions and seeing the fans views. As always we really appreciate your feedback too so thanks for that. Next week it's Davison's The Visitation. Until next time - Allons-y!!!

Hey Who fans! It's a creepy-village-vibe this week as review a Pertwee classic. A great news round-up puts our opinions to the test but first, cue the scary wind...

    [powerpress]

    The News

Maybe Chris Eccleston isn't so bad where it concerns Who fans? In light of recent events with Eccleston hanging up the phone during an interview when questioned about Doctor Who, a video has surfaced which shows him more than willing to help out a surprise engagement. Does this alter your opinion on Eccleston's attitude towards the show? Let us know.

Great news! LEGO have announced that a Doctor Who set will be on it's way later this year. After a surprisingly long wait the LEGO guys have finally accepted the a submission from one of the "LEGO Ideas" that happen each year. Good work Andrew Clarke for designing such a cool set that will now be released at some point this year.

The very cool online game The Doctor and the Dalek which is used to teach children how to code has now been released on tablets on the Apple, Amazon and Google Play stores so you can give it a go while on the move (or the sofa). It's a great game and Mr Capaldi himself recorded the audio.

Those chaps over at Big Finish have announced an amazing 6th Doctor story coming up later this year. Doctor Who: The 6th Doctor - The Last Adventure, as you can tell from the title, is a proper regeneration story for old "sixie". During his time on the TV show he was never granted a regeneration story or a fitting ending to his tenure so this looks to rectify that with the usual quality and love Big Finish are known for. Featuring a raft of the 6th Doctor's past companions and The Valeyard too, we can't wait for this story to land. Pre-orders at the ready!

    "The Daemons" Review

We jump in the Tardis and hop back to 1971 and Devil's End to look at this Pertwee classic. Creepy settings, witchcraft, village cult, evil little statues and The Master. Sound like a good story? Listen to hear our thoughts on this 3rd Doctor classic Who adventure. If you want more information on the fantastic setting for this story, check out our very own Adam's YouTube video "The Search for Devils End".

It's been a blast once again talking all things Who. With all the talk of Eccleston recently we're going to review a series 1 story next week - The Unquiet Dead. Be sure to jump over to Facebook and Twitter with your opinions. Until next time - Allons-y!!!

Welcome Who fans to episode 27. Some good news pieces to go through before we get into our review of The Doctor's Daughter. Hath we go...

    [powerpress]

    The News

5th Doctor Peter Davison was interviewed by ABC News recently and was asked about the possibility of there being a female Doctor. His reply was: "I have trouble with the idea of a female Doctor, only because I reckon if you're born on Gallifrey a man, you're probably a male Time Lord." An interesting statement from Davison and one that we share here on the show, at least for now.

Our lovable tin dog companion K-9 is the subject of a new campaign for a new book. The Essential Book of K-9 is a new project from K-9 series co-creator Paul Tams. He feels there should be a more complete book about K-9 and his adventures not only with the Doctor but the likes of Sarah Jane etc. You can contribute over at IndieGoGo to make sure this book gets published, so go and do that now!

With the launch of the new Lethbridge-Stewart novels around the corner, The Who Shop in London is holding a special launch day event where you'll be able to get the book signed by Andy Frankham-Allen as well as mingle with Who names such as Jemma Redgrave and Terrance Dicks. The event will happen on Saturday 28th February and you can find address details to the brilliant Who Shop here.

Chris Eccleston has been doing the media rounds the last couple of weeks to promote new Sky Atlantic show Fortitude and as usual there's not much love for Doctor Who. Never one to give the show much love since his departure there's even rumour he hung up on a reporter when they asked his thoughts on Capaldi. Come on Chris, landing an iconic role that helped your career can't be that bad, can it?

    "The Doctor's Daughter" Review

We're back with Tennant this week as we take a look at an often overlooked episode. There's plenty to like with this story but there's also something about it that holds fans back from re-watching it. Did we get on board with The Doctor and Jenny's cause or did we walk away feeling a little un-loved?

It's been great chatting through some interesting news stories this week and also talking more in-depth than we thought about this week's review episode The Doctor's Daughter.

Red Kang or blue? It's classic years this week and we review the McCoy era story Paradise Towers. Is it ice hot or does it leave us a little lukewarm?

    [powerpress]

    The News

Doctor Who is staying put on Netflix. There's been lots of chatter for the past few weeks and even a few petitions have appeared since the BBC's contract has been in question with Netflix. Good news has prevailed however and The Doctor is here to stay, at least for now.

Russell T Davies' confuses us a little this week after his comments recently. In the last episode we told you that he wouldn't be making a return to write for Doctor Who and wanted to move on but in his latest interview he says that if a DW movie was presented he would absolutely do it. Yeah, we thought it was weird too.

It was the National Television Awards on Wednesday 21st Jan and although DW didn't win in the Best Drama category (that went to the rip-roaring action packed thriller Downton Abbey) the 10th Doctor himself David Tennant did pick up the Special Recognition Award. Completely justified as he's an amazing actor and for us Who fans he always carries the show's torch with pride.

    "Paradise Towers" Review

It's back to the 80's and the McCoy era as we talk through a story that often divides opinion but are we Red Kangs or Blue? Is the Great Architect a suitable monster and what purpose did Pex serve? Find out and more as we chew the fat and give you our rating.

Thank you for getting in touch and posting your thoughts on this week's review. Next week it's The Doctor's Daughter so jump on to Facebook or Twitter and give us your thoughts. Until next time - Allons-y!!!

Welcome back into the Tardis Who fans as we bring you a lot of news covering the possible return of Torchwood to Series 9 filming tid bits. We then crack on with our review of The Beast Below.

    [powerpress]

    The News

Torchwood is set to make a return! I know you've just jumped up and down with excitement but please sit back down as it's not the kind of return you hoped for. It is coming back but in the form of audio plays. This was confirmed by John Barrowman while being interviewed about his role on comic book drama Arrow. Although not the return we were hoping for (which still may happen one day), this does at least bring us some Torchwood stories.

BBC Three will air Doctor Who: Earth Conquest - The World Tour on Friday 16th January at 7pm. Also included as a special feature on the series 8 box set, it follows Peter Capaldi, Jenna Coleman and Steven Moffat as they visit some of the worlds major cities such as New Mexico, Seoul, London and Sydney to promote the launch of series 8 and its debut episode Deep Breath.

Plenty of series 9 talk is afoot. Most notably the episodes currently being filmed have been written by Toby Whitehouse who has written some great stories over the years such as School Reunion and A Town Called Mercy. This will also be a two-parter which is great as we miss those mid-series. Other series 9 news includes Game of Thrones regular Paul Kaye will be starring in an episode.

Doctor Who has been nominated for a National TV Award. It's always great to see Who being nominated for awards and in the world of UK TV this is a pretty big one. You can cast your vote here before midday on 21st January.

Russell T Davies has commented on the chatter about him ever returning to write an episode of Who and, sadly, he has quashed those rumours. In an interview with the Radio Times he says that he has/is moving on and is basically doing his one thing and Doctor Who doesn't feature in that plan. Sad I know but let's hope that one day he changes his mind.

    "The Beast Below" Review

Bit of a surprise this one but this was the first episode of Doctor Who that I (Garry) watched completely and put me on my journey into the world of Who. This is an often overlooked episode and gets mixed reviews but what did we think of it?

A pretty smooth Tardis flight this episode, thank you for joining us and to leave you with a teaser, we have some amazing prizes lined up for a March giveaway. More details to come. Until next time - Allons-y!!!

Our first show in 2015 and we kick off with landing the Tardis quite smoothly for a change to bring you the latest Doctor Who news then go straight in with our review of this much praised classic - The Web of Fear, but did it give us chills?

    [powerpress]

    The News

Sadly to start with, television director Fiona Cumming has sadly passed away aged 77. Fiona has been in the industry for many years and was a popular director around the Troughton era through to Davison's, putting her name to over 34 episodes. A sad occasion but good memories from some of those amazing stories.

John Hurt, the War Doctor himself, has been knighted. Yes, the veteran actor who portrayed the almost given up War Doctor in the 50th anniversary special The Day of the Doctor is now a Sir! Well done indeed.

Filming kicked off on Monday 5th Jan in Cardiff for Series 9. Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman were back in the thick of it and starting recording block A. As we know Jenna decided at the last minute to stay on for series 9's entirety so we think and dream of all the adventures that await.

2015 marks the 10 year anniversary of the show's return to our screens when Chris Eccleston and Billie Piper changed the show forever. As a celebration we will be holding a competition nearer the time (March/April) with some cool goodies up for grabs. We'll reveal more as we get closer so stay tuned to find out how you can win.

    "The Web of Fear" Review

We travel way back to the years of black and white to review this recently found classic story. Generally reviews very well did we agree with the general opinion or was there more to this story that made us think otherwise? Did the Yeti's scare enough? Was Jamie and Victoria worthy of companion applaud? Did Troughton give us his usual brilliance? All these and more in our retro-review.

Thank you for kicking off 2105 with us inside the Big Blue Box. We'd love to hear your thoughts on The Web of Fear so let us know in the comments below or on Twitter and Facebook. Until next time - Allons-y!!!

As 2014 draws to a close we round out the year's news then go straight in with our review of 2014's Christmas special - Last Christmas.

    [powerpress]

    The News

We have confirmation that Jenna Coleman will be staying on throughout all of series 9 and not just for the first half as we first thought. A bit of an up-and-down story this one as originally she was meant to leave at the Christmas special, then decided she wanted to stay on for the first half of series 9 and now she's on for good. Oh Clara, what are we going to do with you?

2014's Christmas special Last Christmas received modest ratings of 6.3m in the overnights. It surprisingly beat Downton Abbey and came in just shy of Corrie. Not amazing overnight's but as we've spoken about on the show recently, more people are recording via Sky+, Virgin etc or watching via BBC iPlayer so this is more of an opening remark rather than the final curtain call.

The Doctor has been voted the Best Sci-Fi Character of All Time in a survey conducted by the British Film Institute. Beating off sci-fi icons such as Darth Vader, Ripley from Alien, Doctor Spock and Fox Mulder to name a few, The Doctor has once again be held in high regard by fans of sci-fi. Full story and results here.

Now that the 10th, 11th and 12th Doctor's are in full swing with their own comic book run from Titan Comics, it's time for the 9th Doctor to have a turn too. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the show's return in 2005, a 5-issue mini-run will launch in March featuring Eccleston. Definitely a purchase based on the quality of the current comics.

    "Last Christmas" Review

Our last review of 2014! As we took Christmas week off as a break our last review had to be 2014's much awaited Last Christmas. With guest roles from the likes of Nick Frost and Dan Starkey and featuring a story line around Santa Claus this one definitely had us interested. Did it deliver a tasty tangerine or put us back to sleep to dream of better Christmas specials?

As always. thanks for flying in the Tardis with us for episode 23. As this was out last recording of 2014 I'd like to say a very Happy New Year (you can read my more detailed message here) and let's all have a fantastic 2015. Allons-y!!!
