Two-minute Time Lord

Two-minute Time Lord
Description:
Two-minute Time Lord is a commentary podcast about the BBC ' s popular family science fiction program, Doctor Who. We ' ll try to keep this context in mind as we review episodes, comment on the news of the moment, and otherwise pontificate: Doctor Who is not FOR a thirtysomething podcaster. It ' s for that nine-year-old behind the sofa. But his or her mum and dad have been invited along for the ride, as are those of us who were kids when Peter Davison first picked up a cricket bat. And we ' ll keep it to two minutes, because we ' re ALL in a hurry.

Mirroring Doctor Who's enormous popularity, the Doctor himself has become a bigger and bigger deal in his own fictional universe, and the axis around which most of his stories have rotated in recent years. Is it time to dial things back? Maybe even go back to the old, formulaic days of having random adventures and moving on?

    30 November 2013 (3:19am GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 4 minutes and 29 seconds

    Direct Podcast Download

"The Day of the Doctor" turned our understanding of what happened during the Last Great Time War on our collective head, while somehow managing not to seriously break previous episodes' continuity. It's not a perfectly clean fit, however: there's one significant Moment of inconsistency, and a completely different portrayal of the Time Lords…

  • 2MTL 328: The Day After the Day of the Doctor

    24 November 2013 (9:20pm GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 3 minutes and 29 seconds

    Direct Podcast Download

After my first viewing of "The Day of the Doctor," I thought that it was very much in the vein of "The Five Doctors." That can be a mixed blessing: "The Five Doctors" is beloved, and successful in celebrating 20 years of DOCTOR WHO, but not an example of excellent TV drama in its own right. Much as I enjoyed "Day," was I being too hard on it?

If I had talked about "The Night of the Doctor" right after it aired, this is what you would have heard:

Fortunately for us all, there will be no squeeing or wibbling in today's podcast. There will be brief consideration of the petition currently asking for even more televised Eighth Doctor goodness, though.

    3 November 2013 (1:47am GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 8 minutes and 47 seconds

    Direct Podcast Download

The Ood Cast are no strangers to 2MTL, but it's been a while since they've released a new episood. Why? Because they've been busy preparing The Complete Works of Gallifrey (Abridged), which will re-present every episode of the new series within an hour. It's happening on 16 November 2013 at 7:45 p.m. in the Questors Theatre. You can buy tickets now, but why not listen to Chris and Laura Sigma tell me more about it?

No, really. We recorded this during a torrential rainstorm and my wife stood outside with an umbrella to keep a mystery stream of water from splashing loudly against the recording studio window. So if you don't listen to the interview she will have suffered for nothing.

  • 2MTL 321: "New Earth" Two-minute Throwback

    12 September 2013 (1:07am GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 4 minutes and 8 seconds

    Direct Podcast Download

The single clearest indication you can get of what a new Doctor's going to be like won't come around until the second full episode. (This I vow to be self-evident! Unless you disagree with me, at which point it becomes an argument for a future 2MTL!) "New Earth" is the first distraction-free look at David Tennant's and Russell T. Davies's Tenth Doctor, warts and applegrass and all. Note that I gave the episode no extra points for having a character named after me.

My wife Shannon guests with her reaction to the recent online criticism of Doctor Who "fangirls."

    2 August 2013 (9:33pm GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 35 minutes and 35 seconds

    Direct Podcast Download

So while we wait for Sunday's announcement of the actor that will play the next Doctor, let's talk about that stickiest of subjects, Doctor Who canon. We won't discuss whether Dimensions in Time is "in" or Time Crash is "out" (the answer is no and no, by the way) but where this whole notion of canonical stories comes from in the first place: religion!

What does "Doctor Who canon" have in common with religious canon? How does one determine which stories "matter," and does a 50-year-old television series develop a canon in the same way that a 2,000 year-old (give or take) religion did? Rabid Doctor Who fan and New Testament historian Mark Goodacre is the perfect guest for this Time Dilation conversation. No proselytization, just Doctor Who geekery at its finest, placed in a historical context.

    And Mark, update your website.

I guess it's possible that I'm simply a Bad Fan ( Warren Frey), but I can't say that I was excited about the return of the Ice Warriors. Admit it: didn't the old ones look kind of — silly? Turns out the monster itself was mostly a triumph in "Cold War," but oddly this episode fell prey to one of "The Rings of Akhaten"'s problems.
