    Kasterborous Doctor Who podKast

Usually on the podKast (with a “K”), we talk about stuff then squeeze the recommendations in at the end.

This week, we’re flipping it around, talking about a little bit of stuff at the start (transforming TARDISes, time lapse videos of police box builds, etc.) and filling the rest of the episode up with a massive recommendation – the new Spearhead from Space Special Edition on Blu-ray!

Interestingly, James McLean hasn’t yet seen the new upgraded high definition version, which means that he can be your way in, asking the questions of Christian and Brian as they discuss the upgrade, the extras and the remarkable impact the serial had on Doctor Who back in 1970.

Kasterborous Doctor Who podKast It’s a full team line-up this week as Brian Terranova returns to the podKast (with a “K”) to share his thoughts about the casting of Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor, something that we’re still excited about!

(Except James. He’s less excited now. Humbug, etc.)

Meanwhile, we consider some of those unlucky chaps who were overlooked for the starring role in television’s most awesome time travelling adventure show. Could Anthony Head have made a great Doctor? What about Bernard Cribbins?

Finally, as ever, listen out for our recommendations, which this week is a nice combination of Doctor Who and other related things…

  • PodKast LIVE Commentates Twelfth Doctor Unveiling

    4 August 2013 (4:09pm GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 seconds

is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

At 7pm (UK time) Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor will kick-off, a half hour of TV that will herald the announcement of the identity of the twelfth actor to play the character on the box.

But what if you can’t make it?

You could be, for instance, stranded in a shopping centre, or in a pub with no TV. You might be one of the millions of Americans who doesn’t have access to BBC America, or you could be in bed in Australia.

If you have difficulty watching the show, but can get online, Kasterborous is here for you! We’re live podKasting the event as it happens YouTube, Google Hangouts and right here from 7pm tonight, with Christian Cawley and James McLean. Sadly we don’t think the house band or Brian Terranova can make it, but there’s always next time.

The link to PodKast LIVE will appear here soon!

If you miss the live podKast – in which we’ll be reacting to the casting announcement as it happens – don’t worry, as you’ll still be able to catch the podKast on iTunes, RSS, Stitcher, Audioboo and right here on Kasterborous, just as usual. Only it’ll be without the video.

    Which might be a blessing.

A special announcement calls for extraordinary steps, so on this week’s Kasterborous podKast (with a “K”) Christian Cawley and James McLean will be broadcasting at 7pm from Google Hangouts – that’s right, we’re podKasting our commentary and discussion of the unveiling of the new Doctor LIVE on the web.

    Kasterborous Doctor Who podKast

Christian and James will be observing the events of Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor, possibly with some irreverence, and you’ll be able to witness first hand our reaction as the Twelfth Doctor is unveiled.

Whether you’re free to join us or catch up after the show, you’ll still be able to download the podKast and listen via iTunes, Stitcher, Audioboo and RSS so there’s no change there – but for such a big event, we thought it would be pretty cool to throw our faces onto the web and go live…

We’ll be updating you with the link here, on Facebook and on Twitter closer to broadcast, but until then, get ready for another memorable night of Doctor Who!

Kasterborous Doctor Who podKastA little later than planned, it’s the latest Kasterborous podKast (with a “K”) in which we discuss the Eighth Doctor’s post-TV Movie life on audio, in books and in the Doctor Who Magazine comic strip (one of the strips creative high points).

While we also address the question of whether McGann is involved in some way in the 50th anniversary (although he says not), we’re chatting really about the creativity of the books and audios during this era, where strong stories were created and somehow injected the supposedly dead TV show with enough off-screen life to successfully return in 2005.

Kasterborous Doctor Who podKastCurious things took place at the K Towers virtual studio this week, resulting in an hour long podKast that somehow went unrecorded! Being the passionate Doctor Who fans that we are, of course, we pushed on, recording an approximation of the original that attempts to be as honest and genuine as possible.

Sadly, one key result of this is the minimal presence of Brian Terranova, who could only hang around as long as the intro. However, we think you’ll agree that his intro is perhaps one of our best yet, and is one that sets up the rest of the show perfectly. This week, we cover the San Diego Comic Con, namely the trailers for An Adventure in Space and Time and the Doctor Who 50th anniversary – and the crucial matter of Karen Gillan’s newly-shorn locks.

Kasterborous Doctor Who podKast This week’s Kasterborous podKast with a “K” sees the full team of Brian, Christian and James getting together to mull over the recent topics in the Doctor Who world.

We start off with a chat about the appearance of the replica of the original TARDIS console from Mark Gatiss’ An Adventure in Space and Time at the Paris Comic Con (it will later be seen at the Doctor Who Experience in Cardiff) before chatting about the frankly insane “news” that Michael Jackson and Bill Cosby were names suggested for a US production of Doctor Who in the 1980s.

But the highlight this week is probably a chat with Richard Kirby, author of the rather wonderful Desperately Seeking Susan Foreman, an account, complete with brief reviews of stories, of one man’s quest to find autographs from all of the Doctor’ female companions (and not, as we mention before the interview, every single companion). Richard is fascinating to speak to, and it’s always great to feature a guest. I wonder WHO we might have next time…?

But for now, it’s on with the show, so let the house band play you in!

Naturally, he’s also only too happy to tell us about some of the shows he is involved with the production of in the coming weeks as part of the Greater Manchester Fringe, including works by Nigel Kneale (Quatermass) and Keith Temple (Planet of the Ood).

Missing episodes – it’s something of a grokking topic for Doctor Who fans. One minute they’re lost, the next they turn up.

Indeed, even for the Kasterborous PodKast (with a “K”) we recently unearthed lost material that we had intended to bring to you today… only for it to vanish from the K Towers Matrix Databanks when it came to editing.

Fortunately, thanks to former Ugandan despot Idi Amin (unlikely as it may seem) and various BBC personnel (getting silly now, isn’t it?) we at least have the fascinating discussion about the likelihood of 90 missing Doctor Who episodes turning up.

What’s more, we even has references to alien invasions and the four minute warning.

So, click play below to listen to Christian and James discussing the whole bizarre saga as it is at this point in time…

    Kasterborous Doctor Who podKast

James, Christian and Brian are back with another podKast, this week discussing just who John Hurt is, and what his “Doctor” might mean to the series.

Yes, it’s more of the 50th anniversary speculation that has consumed fandom over the past few weeks (Matt Smith’s departure aside) and the podKast team certainly have a lot to say on the matter.

As you may know, there are several theories as to who or what John Hurt is playing in the anniversary special. Is he the Time War Doctor? Does he precede the William Hartnell incarnation?

    Or is he the Valeyard?

Kasterborous Doctor Who podKastWOW! What a weekend.

Regular listeners to the Kasterborous podKast (with a “K) might have been expecting The John Hurt PodKast this week, but thanks to a leaked memo forcing the BBC’s hand over the past couple of days, we’re putting that podKast back a week to discuss the shock news of Matt Smith’s departure from Doctor Who.

That’s right, the popular Eleventh Doctor is close to the end, even if it may not be at Trenzalore, and this week’s hosts James McLean and Christian Cawley have plenty to muse over.

To start off with, there’s Matt Smith’s recent haircut and the potential continuity issues this might bring. There’s the possibility of female Doctors and young Doctors, older actors and even – for the brave among you – the reformatting of the show, 1970-style, into running with an ensemble cast.

As you’ll hear, Steven Moffat (if he’s staying around…) has plenty of ways in which to refresh things for the new Doctor.

Kasterborous Doctor Who podKastIn this week’s slightly-later-than-usual podKast with a “K”, the full team of Christian, Brian and James discuss the highs and lows of Doctor Who Series 7, comparing all episodes from The Bells of Saint John through to The Name of the Doctor.

What will prove particularly interesting is just how the episodes are judged at the end, when we apply a 1960s Saturday tea time Jukebox Jury “Hit or Miss” rule to each…

Will The Name of the Doctor prove to be our favourite episode? Will The Rings of Akhaten turn out to be still loved, two months on?

Could it be that only four episodes are unanimously admired by the team?

Kasterborous Doctor Who podKastIt’s a two-hander this week with James McLean providing company for Christian Cawley – and you, dear listener – as we look in-depth at a few important Doctor Who topics.

First and foremost, we discuss The Crimson Horror. You should really have worked that out from the title of this week’s podKast (with a “K”), of course.

Following this, Christian makes a revelation – that he feels there is something not quite right with Doctor Who Series 7b…

We also chew over the recent rumours concerning Steven Moffat’s continued presence as Doctor Who Executive Producer as well as spending a few moments on the end of shooting on the 50th anniversary episode.

Perhaps most importantly, we want our listeners to tell us what they know about any cinema screenings of the 50th anniversary 3D episode. Our initial research into which cinemas and chains will be taking part have so far drawn a blank… Get in touch using our news contact page.

This week’s recommendations include The Mind of Evil, the special edition DVD release for June.

Kasterborous Doctor Who podKastHave you ever been embarrassed by being a Doctor Who fan?

Is embarrassment a terminal plague upon your love of the series, or do you wear fandom on your sleeve, cosplaying at conventions and generally having a lot of fun with things?

This strange collision of approaches – dressing up vs self loathing – is the main topic of discussion in this week’s Kasterborous podKast (with a “K”) in which we talk about the differences between Brian Terranova and James McLean following the former’s regular cosplaying adventures and the latter’s inability to buy a copy of DWM without wondering what the WHSmith girl thinks of him.

    17 February 2013 (9:08pm GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 seconds

    Kasterborous Doctor Who podKast

Ah yes, it is that time of the week once again when the Kasterborous team reconvenes to discuss some particularly topical Doctor Who matters.

This time around we’re looking at various 50th anniversary related issues (and let’s face it, this is likely to be the situation throughout 2013…) as well as offering you some suggestions for your own reading and viewing over the coming weeks to stave off the TARDIS-shaped vacuum in your life.

It’s Christian and James this week as Brian had to take receipt of an interesting wood structure. We can’t quite work out what it is, but it seems to be quite box-like. Might look nice in blue, too…

Also, don’t forget our new competition - the chance to win Aurum Press’ Terry Nation: The Man Who Invented the Daleks, by Alwyn W. Turner.

Listen to the podKast for the question and send your entries to terrynation@kasterborous.com. Winners will be announced in a fortnight's time in that week's podKast.

Now the choice is entirely yours, but you can listen to our weekly podKast in one of three ways:

    1. Use the player in the top right of each page on Kasterborous.
    2. Listen with the "pop out" player above, which also allows you to download the podKast to your computer.
    3. Third, you can take advantage of the RSS feed to subscribe to the podKast for your media player, and also find us on iTunes!

Kasterborous Doctor Who podKastThis week’s podKast (with a “K”) is a collision of time – and indeed “wime” – as we bring some recent unheard highlights to the table as Christian Cawley, James McLean and Brian Terranova discuss some Doctor Who topics “after hours”.

That term isn’t an admission of adult language (although you might find a particular rude word in there), rather an explanation that sometimes we end up continuing our discussions after the allotted recording time has ended. As we were unable to commit to an agreed time this week, the result is an interesting mash of chats about pacing in Doctor Who and other shows and films, the question of whether there are any episodes that are missing audio (as opposed to video) and whether the separation between the modern and classic series is really as clearly defined as we think it is.

Also, look out for the announcement of our Shada competition winner, and our new comp – the chance to win Terry Nation: The Man Who Invented the Daleks, by Alwyn W. Turner.

Listen to the podKast for the question and send your entries to terrynation@kasterborous.com. Winners will be announced in a fortnight’s time in that week’s podKast.

Kasterborous Doctor Who podKastHUZZAH! Last week’s podKast (and indeed all of our weekly ramblings) is now back up and running for our listeners and subscribers to enjoy, so forgive us this indulgence as we re-present it for your entertainment.

As you may recall, this podKast (with a “K”) covers Big Finish’s 50th anniversary plans, our recent recommendations, what episode we would take to a desert island and also includes a competition for you to win a copy of the paperback version of Shada!

Brian Terranova, James McLean and editor Christian Cawley are on hand to offer their thoughts and hopes for Big Finish’s various 50th anniversary projects (that we know about) and share their answers to our new semi-regular feature, Desert Island Doctor Who.

But there’s more: in order to be in with a chance of winning a copy of the new paperback version of Gareth Roberts’ adaptation of Douglas Adams Shada (out January 31st), you’ll need to listen to this week’s podKast, via the player below.

(The email address for entering the competition is shada@kasterborous.com. Due to the problems with the podKast in the last week, the competition close date has been extended one week to February 3rd, 2013. Winner will be announced in the first podKast following this date.)

There are three ways to listen:

    1. Use the player in the top right of each page on Kasterborous.
    2. Listen with the "pop out" player above, which also allows you to download the podKast to your computer.

  • What's Up With The PodKast?

    21 January 2013 (8:27pm GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 minutes and 0 seconds

Kasterborous Doctor Who podKastLast week we released the latest podKast – with added Shada competition! Then we found out that there was a fault with the downloads.

At present the only way in which you can listen to the podKast is via player in the right-hand column, just up there.

This is less than idea, and will have quite a bad impact on our listener figures. As a result, we will not be issuing any new podKasts until the problem (related to a change in our server configuration) is resolved. Hopefully this will be soon, but until it happens, that’s the situation.

(To give you an idea of the problem, we’ve had 16 listens so far to the most recent podKast. The previous one attracted almost 300.)

The Shada competition will be extended indefinitely until this issue is resolved. For more details on that, you’ll need to listen to the podKast (it’s near the end), in which we cover Big Finish’s recent 50th anniversary special details and a few other bits and pieces…

So whether you’re a fan of The Christmas Invasion, The Runaway Bride, Voyage of the Damned, The Next Doctor, The End of Time, Part Two or even A Christmas Carol or The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe, there is something here for you.

Kasterborous Doctor Who podKastYou can’t have missed our recent editorial concerning the revealing of spoilers on Bleeding Cool – and while we are happy for the fuss to die down, this week’s podKast (with a “K”) has a different take on the whole situation.

Rather than focus on the spoiler itself or judge the rationale behind leaking it, we look instead at the different types of spoiler a fan might encounter, the type of fan who might want spoilers or be driven by an insatiable desire to share things that other fans would rather not know and offer our thoughts as to why spoilers are actually needed.

Because they are. In a perfect world, no spoilers would enable complete enjoyment of a story, much like most of the 1980s. But the world in which we live is far from perfect, something that results in the use of small spoilers (such as plot points, casting or set changes, for example) to be used for promotion.

Your hosts this week are Christian Cawley and James McLean.

Kasterborous Doctor Who podKastIt’s podKast time again, and this week we discuss a couple of Doctor Who-related matters. Most topical is our reaction to Colin Baker’s ejection from “the jungle”, but we also discuss the beauty of the “base under siege” adventures that punctuate the show’s history.

With Colin’s departure from I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!, we finally get the chance to discuss our feelings about the show and his appearance on it, as well as bemoan the apparent lack of Doctor Who fans voting for the Sixth Doctor actor.

Meanwhile our base under siege chat follows the recent news that one of Mark Gatiss’ Series 7 scripts is apparently set on a submarine…

Sadly this week it’s just James and Christian, as Brian Terranova had to spend time saving the universe in his Tenth Doctor outfit (again). To balance things up, next week’s podKast will be hosted by James and Brian.

Kasterborous Doctor Who podKastThis week’s podKast (with a “K”) features a discussion of the new Doctor Who Christmas trailer, revealed last week on Children in Need. We also cover the Steven Moffat and Phil Ford’s recent Writer’s Guild awards and the current state of children’s drama TV, referencing The Sarah Jane Adventures and Wizards vs Aliens.

Also this week, we offer our recommendations on some recent releases and finally say goodbye to Time Leech.

Our thoughts on the Christmas trailer seem to be quite different, with Brian Terranova in particular claiming to be “depressed” by the apparent misuse of the Sontaran character as a comic character. What do you think? Has Steven Moffat devalued the Sontarans or were they always a bit of a ridiculous alien race?

With the tantalising prospect of telling 'Cartmel's masterplan' – the stories that were cruelly nixed when the series itself was axed by the BBC - the project has already raised over PS2000.

The pair sat down for a Q & A with the magazine to share their influences, discuss the future of the comic and why you should 'be prepared to be surprised'

With the project well on its way, the pair are already looking forward to making the most of the medium’s unlimited potential:

"Hans Vang: If a good story comes our way, absolutely. Personally, I would like to try to go even crazier, developing a series out of the Nelvana animated series pitch, using the artwork available on the internet as inspiration. I’d like to see The Daleks have their own stories, I’d like to see representations of things like Rose – Defender of the Earth, or whatever that spin-off show was supposed to be called before it was canned. I’d like to see lots of nutty things like that in the ‘zine down the line, and I have a feeling other people would also like to see those ideas represented as something tangible rather than an idea floating in the ether."

The main selling point for fans of course is the chance to read potential scripts for the sadly curtailed Seventh Doctor era, and it's a prospect that has gotten Cartmel thinking about what could have been:

Knowing what you know now, if you could have done one thing different during your time with Doctor Who, what would it be?

AC: To write a whole bunch of episodes. But whenever I think about that, I realise it would have meant sacrificing some of the stories by my writers – and it would be hard, if not impossible, to imagine the series without the great scripts crafted by this talented crew.

Now with Fan Fiction Illustrated the pair has their own talented crew of industrial professionals to craft the kind of stories that excite both themselves and fans - it's a interesting endeavour and one that has just one remit by the creators themselves; it must be fun:

HV: The main objective of this exercise, for myself and for Andrew at least, is to have fun. That said, there’s not much point to the whole thing if we just include every scrap of content sent to us without looking on it with a critical eye, editing and conversing with the writers. I’m constantly looking for talent with whom to work in the future..."

  • Is It Time To Welcome Back Russell T Davies?

    10 November 2012 (12:06am GMT)
Episode Duration: 0 days, 0 hours, 0 minutes and 1 second

    Direct Podcast Download

In this week’s Kasterborous podKast (with a “K”) James McLean and editor Christian Cawley chat about recent news developments concerning Russell T Davies, from Torchwood to Wizards vs Aliens and, of course, the Doctor Who graphic novel that wasn’t.

We also spend a few moments talking about the Rani and the cyclical abandoning of writers from previous eras throughout the show’s history, something that leads us to wonder if now is the time for Russell to contribute an episode to the series…

You should also look out for our timey-wimey “phrase of the week”, which is cleverly predicted the week (or in this case, two weeks) before it is even recorded.

Just how do we do that?!

(A quick word of context and warning – due to the surprise availability of Andrew Cartmel for last week’s podKast, our original recording for that week is what is presented here. As a result there are references to Hurricane Sandy and Brian Terranova’s absence.)

If you're a new listener (welcome to the podKast!), here's how you can listen to our weekly show:

    1. Use the player in the top right of each page on Kasterborous.
    2. Listen with the "pop out" player above, which also allows you to download the podKast to your computer.
    3. Third, you can take advantage of the RSS feed to subscribe to the podKast for your media player, and also find us on iTunes!

Whoah yes, former Doctor Who script editor Andrew Cartmel (1987-1989) joins us on the podKast (with a “K”) this week to chat about a new project, Doctor Who Fan Fiction Illustrated!

With Hans Christian Vang as his partner for this exciting new crowdsourcing proposal, Andrew is onboard to further the legendary “Cartmel Masterplan” – the term given to the restoration of mystery and mystique that typified his time on the show.

This week, you won’t find a mysterious time-wimey "Previously on next week's podKast" sentence to look out for - instead, it should pop up in the next podKast.

Now, if you’re a new listener, here’s how you can listen to our weekly podKast:

    1. Use the player in the top right of each page on Kasterborous.
    2. Listen with the "pop out" player above, which also allows you to download the podKast to your computer.
    3. Third, you can take advantage of the RSS feed to subscribe to the podKast for your media player, and also find us on iTunes!

Now then, the important part: please back Fan Fiction Illustrated at www.indiegogo.com/ffidw – should the project not go ahead, funds will be returned to the backers, so no one is out of pocket. Everybody wins – but we’re backing Hans and Andrew to produce what promises to be a major new player in the Doctor Who comic strip world!
