PodcasticaWell, friends, we were right! The Invasion of Time definitely influences the creation of Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS! #253 - Push It
Doctor Who: The Metebelis 2We discuss the recent animation of the William Hartnell story, The Celestial Toymaker. Overall, we think it successfully presented a boring, at times, story that is hard to follow with moving images for episodes 1–3 missing. Ben would like to see the animators push it even further away from the original broadcast visuals. David would have preferred the guest cast's likeness to be better expressed in the animation designs for the clowns, cards, and toys. The opening music is from The Celestial Toymaker, incidental music composed by Dudley Simpson. The closing music is "Push It" by Salt-n-Pepa. We recorded this episode on 22 July 2024.

DWLit Presents: Buffy the Vampire Slayer Seasons 1-5 (with Jason and Callie)
Doctor Who LiteratureAs Doctor Who Literature nears the end of a very packed season discussing each of the novelizations and other Doctor Who spinoff books of 1986 and 1987, Jason and Callie were also watching the entirety of Buffy the Vampire Slayer -- 144 episodes in about 144 days. Now we sit down in our dining room to discuss the series. This episode will cover "Welcome to the Hellmouth" through "The Gift".
There is ambient noise, mostly cats, throughout the recording. Smudge watched all 144 episodes of Buffy with us, so how could we exclude her from this recording?

Finger on the Zeitgeist
Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who PodcastThis Christmas in July, we are joined by Adam Richard on a sleigh ride that flies right past the Marvel Cinematic Universe and lands on Margot Kidder’s rooftop in 1978. Which is, it turns out, not a bad place to be. It’s The Return of Doctor Mysterio.
Notes and links
Steven Moffat’s clear inspiration here is Richard Donner’s Superman: The Movie (1978), an astonishingly well-made and entertaining superhero movie starring Christopher Reeve as Clark and the wonderful Margot Kidder as Lois. If you haven’t seen it, put your phone down at once and go and find a copy.
In Episode 271: Eels with Jazz Hands, we mentioned the previous life of director Ed Bazalgette as a member of 1980s one-hit wonder The Vapors. The one hit in question was called Turning Japanese, and it was a massive thing at the time.
The CW superhero shows Peter mentions are collectively called the Arrowverse, which started just a few years before this episode aired, and which included shows like Arrow (2012), The Flash (2014), Supergirl (2015) and Legends of Tomorrow (2016), featuring our very own Arthur Darvill.
Ang Lee’s unloved film Hulk (2003) liberally used comic book panels to transition between scenes (in a way far more sophisticated than what’s attempted in this Doctor Who episode). This brief video will give you the idea.
It was Adam’s job to watch Series 10 of Doctor Who as a regular on the ABC’s Doctor Who aftershow Whovians, which covered Series 10 to 12 and screened a day or so after each episode aired.
Brendan mentions the Matt Fleischer animated Superman films from the 1940s, particularly the kinds of villains this version of Superman routinely fought. In the second film, The Mechanical Monsters (1941), Superman confronts a group of giant robots who rob banks and museums and inspire artists and filmmakers for generations. Go and watch it at once.
Attractive Coal Hill Academy student Ram loses a leg in the first episode of the Doctor Who spin-off Class, which screened over eight weeks leading up to the start of December 2016. And then no one ever mentioned it or even thought about it ever again.
Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (1993) was an insanely popular television show in the 1990s, starring Teri Hatcher as Lois Lane and featuring the incredibly beautiful Dean Cain as Clark. (He’s a horrid alt-right nutcase these days, which is a grim warning to all of us, I suppose.)

And more
You can find links to all of the podcasts we’re involved in on our podcasts page. But here’s a summary of where we’re up to right now.
500 Year Diary is our latest new Doctor Who podcast, going back through the history of the show and examining new themes and ideas. It’s first season came out early this year, under the title New Beginnings. Check it out. It will be back for a second season early in 2025.
The Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire has broadcast our hot takes on every new episode of Doctor Who since November last year, and it will be back again in 2025 for Season 2.
There’s also Startling Barbara Bain, our Space: 1999 commentary podcast. We’ve covered the first five episodes of Series 1; Episode 6 should be out in the next couple of weeks.
The Three Handed Game is a podcast on The Avengers and The New Avengers. In the most recent episode, Brendan, Richard and Steven watched an episode from Diana Rigg’s first series, Two’s a Crowd.
Brendan’s gaming podcast is called The Bjay BJ Game Show, and in its most recent episode, Brendan and Bjay visited some tilt-shifted Minecraft-inspired holiday destinations in The Touryst.
And finally there’s our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. Last week, we visited the centre of the galaxy and met up with the Devil (who seemed nice) in an inexpensively produced episode of The Animated Series called The Magicks of Megas-Tu.

#252 - The Original Leading Man
Doctor Who: The Metebelis 2We pay our respects to William Russell, the actor who played Ian Chesterton, Doctor Who's original leading man. With Russell, Ian proved to be a solid and dependable man of action and reason. Along with Jacqueline Hill, who played Barbara Wright, the two provided the moral centre for the early show, which relied on their decency, normality, and dependability to guide the viewers in the early mid-1960s along this amazing adventure in space and time. The programme will likely never see another character like Ian again. The opening music is from "The Chase" soundtrack composed by Dudley Simpson and the closing music is from "The Aztecs" composed by Richard Rodney Bennett and performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra in 2021. We recorded this episode on 15 July 2024.

TDP 1274: 2.2. The Paternoster Gang: Trespassers 2: The Casebook of Paternoster Row review
Tin Dog Podcastreview In Victorian England, the Great Detective, Madame Vastra, her resourceful spouse, Jenny Flint, and their loyal valet, Strax, solve conundrums, fight injustice and capture criminals - but an enemy has taken up residence undetected. Vastra believes trespassers are close at hand, and seeks out clues in some of the Gang's previous cases... 2.4 Anne of a Thousand Light Years by James Kettle The course of true love never does run smooth - especially when it involves a high-born young lady, a humble farmhand and extra-terrestrial chameleons on the lookout for breeding stock. Will Lady Anne Warminster marry the man of her dreams? Will the amorphous Glossophants secure their chosen spawn bride? Will Jenny ever finish reading a novel by Anthony Trollope? In the heart of the English countryside, the Gang tackle an assignment involving romance, skulduggery and horse manure. 2.5 Pater Noster by Gary Russell Something is hiding in the sewers of London, picking off the poor and lost souls who live down there... Madame Vastra opens a case file that takes her back to her early days and a Life Task that must be finally fulfilled. A case where she and her friends face death from an enemy capable of shredding matter into echoing screams... 2.6 The Gentlemen Thieves by Lauren Mooney and Stewart Pringle Vastra reviews the case of a 'one-man crime wave' - break-ins and burglaries, committed by the same handsome and daring thief, even when they were committed at exactly the same time. Unravelling the secrets of these doppelganger ne’er-do-wells, the Gang touch on the fringe of a bigger conspiracy. But as Vastra recalls the past, the dangers of the present are closing in.

TDP 1258: #DoctorWho: The Fifth Doctor Adventures: The Dream Team
Tin Dog Podcastreview This title was released in April 2024. It will be exclusively available to buy from the Big Finish website until 31 May 2024, and on general sale after this date. Mysteries come in all shapes and forms. From a small-scale murder to an alien conspiracy. But when they arise the Doctor, Tegan, Nyssa and Adric are the perfect team to deal with them. The Merfolk Murders by Tim Foley (4 parts) St Andrews, Scotland, 1940. The Merfolk are a university society meeting through the summer to discuss murder mystery stories. Innocent escapism during wartime, they say. Their latest book is The Casebook of Orion Hood - whose hero is all-too-familiar to the Doctor... When a real-life murder occurs soon after their gathering, the Doctor’s friends encourage him to investigate. Is one of the Merfolk responsible? Was this crime the result of espionage or envy? The Doctor must embrace his deerstalker once more and solve this wartime mystery - before the killer can strike again! Dream Team by Lizzie Hopley (2 parts) “Welcome to Concordium! The one-stop destination for elite and effective corporate bonding.” A protected wonder of space is being exploited for ‘company away days’ but when the Doctor, Tegan, Nyssa and Adric land to challenge the organisers, they fall into a web of perfectly tailored nightmares. As the Doctor confronts one of the most dangerous monsters in existence, one that uses your own mind against you while it feeds, his companions fall deeper into the trap and a nasty truth is revealed - you can die in dreams. This release comes with a bonus audiobook download: Meanwhile, Turlough by Jonathan Blum. **Please note: the Collectors' Edition CDs are strictly limited to a pressing of just 1,500 copies**
