Rob and Dave Unplugged (The DW Show Presents: Fandom in the 80s, 90s and Beyond)
The Doctor Who ShowJanuary 27, 2018 saw a lot of firsts... it was the first time Rob met Dave in person; the first time the guys recorded an episode of their show in person; the first time Rob had ever recorded a podcast with ANYONE else in the room; the first time they recorded with the guys from the New to Who podcast (see our February 25 episode); the first time Rob had met any of the Flight Through Entirety podcast team... and so on. You get the idea.
Anyway, at some stage on that very busy day, amid recording an episode of the Doctor Who Show and an episode of New to Who, Rob and Dave found time to crack out a single microphone, mount it on a table, and have a conversation about Doctor Who fandom in Australia. Basically how they came into it; what it was like; conventions, and more. They end up moving through the topic and even onto talking about the modern era of fandom that they now no longer feel a major part of, but are extremely supportive of.
Very personal... a little indulgent... and the sound quality isn't quite where the Doctor Who Show normally pitches, but if you're at all interested in our back stories, or Doctor Who fandom in Australia in the 80s and 90s in particular, this could be a very interesting episode for you to hear.

309: Lawn and Order (Random Shoes)
Trust Your DoctorZoom zoom look at my lawn mower.
There’s a notably small amount of discussion of Torchwood in this episode. I’m not really sure why. Maybe it’s because the episode was boring as hell. No really, it was really boring! And Eugene wasn’t really that sympathetic, he’s a stalker! Well anyway. It’s Random Shoes, written by Jacquetta May and aired on December 10, 2006.
Show-notes:
24:41: If you want to listen to us do whatever the hell it is we’re doing here but with classic sci-fi shows like Sapphire and Steel and The Prisoner, check out our classic sci-fi podcast, Inevitable: A Classic Sci-Fi Podcast.
28:47: KEEPING THE DREAM ALIVE
39:54: Eugene by Pink Martini
43:42: It was National Museum Cardiff
54:02: I can’t believe Grandpa Joe Hate exists. But at the same time, I can.
1:22:11: If you want to listen to us talk about movie trilogies or Blake’s 7, you;re in luck. Check out Triple Play: A Movie Trilogy Podcast and/or Zenith: A Blake’s 7 Podcast.

Welcome to the Kandy Kommentary
Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who PodcastThis week, Thatcherism, marshmallows and contractual obligation collide as we fulfil a promise made late in 2017 to record a commentary on one of Doctor Who’s angriest and most revolutionary stories, The Happiness Patrol.
Buy the story!
The Happiness Patrol was released on DVD in 2012. In the US, it was released on its own (Amazon US), while in the UK and Australia, it was inexplicably released as part of the Ace Adventures box set, along with Dragonfire (Amazon UK).
Notes and links
Our original discussion of The Happiness Patrol, featuring Brendan and Richard, can be found in Episode 122: This Neocon World, recorded in July 2017.
James and Nathan discussed the story with Erik and Adam on The Real McCoy Podcast in December 2019.
James nominates The Happiness Patrol as his favourite Doctor Who story on New to Who’s surprise Christmas Special back in December 2018.
