Happy New Year from Something Who.

Just before Christmas, on 23rd December 2024, a 90 minute colour version of the War Games was broadcast on BBC4 and made available in the BBC iPlayer. As with The Daleks before it, this 10 part black and white story has been edited into a shorter form and colourised to help bring it to life for a new generation.

And Something Who has managed to secure a return visit from two of the key members of the team who made it - Benjamin Cook, the Editor, and Rich Tipple, Lead Colourisation Artist. It's a great chat that goes into how and why a number of the creative choices were made, some of the difficulties involved in editing and colorising a story form the 1960s as well as many of the delights involved.

Now that our holiday commitments are done, we're back to review the 2024 Doctor Who Christmas Special "Joy to the World"! Frankly, we loved this Moffat-penned adventure. So be prepared for us to say lots of good things about the show we love...because why would you keep watching if you don't like it? That's weird. Anyway...on with the show!!

The latest leg of our flight through entirety comes to a gentle landing this week, but before we all head off to collect our luggage, all seven of us take the opportunity to say goodbye to Peter Capaldi and Steven Moffat in one last retrospective.

In our discussion of Sleep No More, Brendan reaches for the name of Bethany Black’s love interest in the episode, but goes slightly astray. The name he’s after is Chopra, played by the astoundingly beautiful Neet Mohan.

In Episode 2 of Flight Through Entirety, Richard famously compares Hartnell’s performance style to Marlene Dietrich’s. This week, he bookends that beautifully with a comparison of Peter Capaldi’s style to Maggie Smith’s, particularly her Oscar-winning performance in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.

Richard alludes to this story from 2015, in which a team consisting of Peter Capaldi, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss came third in a Doctor Who pub trivia competition at a Doctor Who convention in Sydney.
