Episode 43 - Death to the Daleks (with Paul Simpson)
Doctor Who LiteratureThis week in September 2022 saw the announcement of the title of the next Doctor Who episode ("The Power of the Doctor"), although not the release date. This week also saw "Cobra Kai" Season 5 drop on Netflix, though that's of slightly less importance to fandom.
My guest this week is Paul Simpson (@scifibulletin), who has several terrific stories to tell about the early years of the Target Books publishing office and some amazing details about the early writers (Malcolm Hulke and his graph paper!). Paul is currently managing editor of Sci-Fi Bulletin.
Release information and a link to "Doctor Who and the Daleks: The Illustrated Edition" can be found here.
Stick around for the second half of the program, when Jason discusses the "Death to the Daleks" novelization -- a perfect example of how Terrance adds value and insight and depth to the TV serial even in a very short book. There's lots to break down today.
Please e-mail the pod at DrWhoLiterature@gmail.com.

Fluffy Bums
Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who PodcastThis week, we’re joined aboard a Soviet submarine by Mark McManus, Jack Shanahan and a low-effort lizard alien, who proceeds to run around the boat in the nude murdering members of the crew. But we’re all too interested in Jenna Coleman, David Warner, some guys from Game of Thrones and a discarded fibreglass suit of armour to notice.
Notes and links
The tale of Steven Berkoff’s wilful destruction of the climactic scenes of The Power of Three is told in its entirety in Episode 234: Stop Watching a Kids’ Show.
Those of you lucky enough not to remember 1983 might need to be told about The Hunt for Red October (1990), a film set on board a Russian submarine captained by a typically Scottish-sounding Sean Connery. Mark Gatiss is definitely looking over his shoulder at that film while he’s writing this episode.
Nathan refers to the most recent episode of Bondfinger, where we comment on am episode of The Saint which contains scenes of French people speaking to one another in English with a French accent. (Which is just the sort of thing they probably do all the time just to prank us.)
Here’s El Sandifer’s brutal assessment of the Ice Warriors: “…if we’re being honest, the fact that they are literally green reptile monsters from Mars has to mark the point where the show has simply given up on monsters and concluded that the audience will accept anything.”
Spencer Wilding played Skaldak in this story and was the Wooden King in The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe and the Minotaur in The God Complex. He also played Darth Vader in Rogue One. Fans of hefty lads will enjoy his Instagram. I certainly did.

The Doctor Who ShowWelcome to the 24th and, for now, FINAL episode of the podcast we’ve been dropping on the feed every month in between our regular monthly shows.
In today’s podcast, Rob sits down with his Doctor Who Show co-host, Dave, to discuss the letters from both Doctor Who Magazine from February of 1986 and some classic issues of the Sonic Screwdriver fanzine from the Doctor Who Club of Victoria.
Yes folks, this is a double episode to end the run on (for now). This is Doctor Who without a safety net. The conversations could go anywhere the guest wants them to go.

The Naked Geek: Creativity, Depression & Not giving Up with Barry Nugent
Geek SyndicateSo as well as doing Geek Syndicate David Montieth has his own podcast 'The Naked Geek'. Seeing as one of the episodes had him chatting with his Geek Syndicate co-founder Barry Nugent we thought GS listeners make like to have a listen. If you like the format Dave has many more Naked Geek Episodes on his feed.
Listen to the banter as they explore their friendship, origins, traumas and dig into how life's mental fallout has affected Barry's creativity.
Guest at a Glance
Barry Nugent is an author of supernatural adventures and the creative force behind the Unseen Shadows Universe, which expands the world and characters from his novels across multiple platforms.
Barry is also the co-host on the Geek Syndicate podcast, that takes a humorous look at pop culture. The success of the podcast led him to co-present two documentaries for the BBC.
Barry lives in sunny Northampton (well sometimes it is) with his wife and two cats.
Show Notes:
Early influences
Family & Geekdom
Influential Characters
Mums & Raiders - The inspiration for creativity
Falling of the bus - an origin story

Episode 63: Looks Familiar
Something WhoHere's a surprise for you - a new episode of Something Who only a month after the previous one.
And what an episode. Richard, Giles and Paul welcome their special guest - actor, stand-up comedian, writer, presenter and podcaster Toby Hadoke for a chat about a couple of stories about alien invasions that use duplicates: 4th Doctor story The Android Invasion, from Season 13, and 9th Doctor story Aliens of London and World War Three from Series 1. As per recent convention, this episode is the first half of that conversation, featuring The Android Invasion.
Please like or share our podcast with people who will enjoy it, so we can build our listener base high for happiness. You can rate us directly on Apple Podcasts or Podchaser.com
Giles' book A History of the Universe in 21 Stars: (and 3 Imposters) can be found in all good bookshops and also here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/History-Universe-21-Stars-Imposters/dp/1787394654/
Paul appears in Doctor Who: The Missing Episodes Podcast https://missingepisodes.podbean.com/. And head over to https://www.bigfinish.com/, where we all love Paul's stories.
Richard has another podcast with co-host Emily, called "If It's Hurting, It's not Working" and it's a fun and informative look at work - why we work, how we work, and what makes a great job. And also what makes a great workplace, how to turn things round when we're not enjoying our work and, in the end, how we can all make our work better. Go to https://ifhurtnotwork.podbean.com/ and https://ifhurtnot.work for more.
Our cover art was designed for us by Bea Garrido. She's a really talented artist, who you can find on Twitter using @BeaGarrido00, where, among other artworks, you can get hold of the prints of some remarkable paintings of characters from Doctor Who.

A Hope in Hell
The Old Doctor Who ShowDan and Eric are back and this time they don't agree on everything. It's our review of the fourth episode of The Sandman, A Hope in Hell.
Outro Music: “Straight to Hell” by The Clash

Movie Special #2
Who and CompanySo we thought we'd do something a little different this month...
About a year and a half ago, we paired some of our favorite movies with Doctor Who stories and we got such a great response that we decided to do it again. Now telling you the movies and the stories would be cheating, but we can tell you that this time we have 4 movie/Doctor Who pairings and they are movies that you know and love....well most of them anyway.
Back to our regular format next time! Thanks for listening!
